Lay off the spoilers please.

Eh, how is that a spoiler?

Still can't believe this guy is ME3's male lead.

Hell, it gets even worse: we don't get a new female one this time...

So there's more new characters coming than him?

There's two other new ones, but those are pretty bad. And that's an understatement.

Well technically we kinda get new female characters but I dont see why we need a new female lead when key characters like Liara, Ashley, and Tali is playing a bigger role.

Meh, we already know those three, and then there's the fact that at least two of those (Liara and Tali) would've been better in important supporting roles, instead of playable ones.

At first, he just looks like a douchebag with his cool hawk and big muscles, but then I realized: James Vega is BioWare's attempt at combining what will appeal to their new players, GOW and COD-loving dudebros, and the nostalgia of a Donkey Kong Gameboy game. That's right. Vega's favorite things are Mountain Dew, Madden NFL 2185, and being shot out of a barrel into a trail of bananas.

But in seriousness, this is one of the aspects of a more realistic aesthetic approach in video games that developers should be wary of; characters being funny-looking or reminding the player of an idiot they know in real life. It's a small possibility, but it's an off-putting, if still hilarious, issue to run into. I wouldn't say any other approach fits Mass Effect more, though.

I've played COD. I play GoW. I still think he looks like a tool in that picture.

Is Mass Effect 3 the first Mass Effect you'll have ever played?

Yes. I just have that "2" below my avatar because it looks pretty.

I see you forgot about Carver. Compare to him, Vega looks like a supermodel.

Saying who are the leads sounds like a spoiler to me.  Not the most specific one, but that's no reason to inflict it on everyone.

I'm always interested in how characters will pan out in-game once I see them, but BioWare has a way about making the macho guy the same as the other macho guy from the last game.

I'm not necessarily sure who you're counting as "Macho", but I can't see this.  Was Jacob the same as Sten or Black Whirlwind?

Sten isn't macho, I don't think. I was more thinking Carth Onasi-->Sagacious Zu-->Ashley Williams-->Carver-->Jacob.

How dare a soldier have muscles.

@OP - do you genuinely think that people who enjoy CoD and GoW are going to spend £50 on a game just because it has a guy with muscles and a mohawk? You don't think that perhaps they buy those games because they enjoy the gameplay and won't be that interested in ME3 because it doesn't have a strong focus on competitive online multiplayer?

I mean, you can't actually believe what you're saying. That would be worrying.

I'm pretty sure Ash is said female lead. She is alive in a majority of games.(Either her or Liara who's alive in all games).

First proper human squaddie of either gender = lead

Vega was already known to be the male one, and it's public knowledge by now that we won't get a female one this time around.

Whiny soldier, bitter and cynical ex-assasin, no nonsense and snarky not-actually racist female soldier, brat younger brother and the priize?  I'm really not seeing a lot of connection

I didn't say he shouldn't have muscles. The Hell?

Do you have comprehension problems? I didn't say James Vega was BioWare's main ME3 marketing focus, or some massive industry-changing gimmick, I said they were making a character that might appeal to a certain cultural sensibility we all know is there.

I get that GOW and COD fans that also play ME3 feel like they're often targeted, but I also don't give a damn and propose you make sure someone is actually an enemy of the games before you pull out the chainsaw gun.

Yeah, you forgot the fact that they were all punchy warriors with oversimplified mindsets and knowledge of few things but fighting. I consider that macho. Of course, it's obvious you only asked me to clarify so you could try to knock my examples down one-by-one.

Teh horror!

And James sure doesn't look appealing to me either, could be a cool character but his looks alone will make sure I'll ignore him as much as possible. This shot is a bit better than the one from the N7 Edition alternate costume, though, but that isn't saying much.

If i've interpreted what you said wrongly then I'm sorry, but that was the impression you gave off.

You pointed out that having muscles and a mohawk make him a douchebag - the hair I kinda agree with but why wouldn't a soldier have large muscles? Just seems ridiculous complaining about them when they're almost necessary for his character.

And you said Vega is Bioware's attempt at appealing to GoW and CoD players. That isn't what attracts them - the online MP is what attracts them. Not how bulky the characters look. If that was the case then all CoD players would've migrated to wrestling games years ago. I just find it ridiculous that people still stick to these gaming stereotypes - they're what the media and the tabloids stick to to portray gamers as bad. Surely gamers themselves have gotten over these sterotypes - if we can't then how can we expect the media to give up on them. Not everyone who plays CoD or GoW is some massive 'dudebro'.

I did like the Donkey Kong reference though. I didn't notice that first time.

And....what ? if the character is well written, what's the big deal ? (and it's a former Vega-hater who's saying that)

There is no big deal. I don't understand why me saying he seems like an archetypical character is the same as me condemning any and all who condone his existence.

I asked for you to clarify because I was interested in your reasoning.  I still don't really understand it - Bioware does have some recurring types of character, but that's not a group which I'd  pick out as resembling each other at all.

For me personally, Carth goes with Kaidan and Alistair - and maybe Zu, though he's a lot less paragon than the others.  Ashley goes with Morrigan, Isabela, Silk Fox and maybe Jaheira as the strong independent "renegade" female LI, contrasted with the cute "paragon" LIs like Aerie, Leliana, Liara, Merrill and Dawn star.

I don't see anything wrong with the character myself.
