I like Vega's face. The derpy, exaggerated features remind me of early videogames, back when fully-rendered cutscenes were a new thing.

Plus, nothing wrong with looking like a gorilla-pig-frog. It makes him more "normal guy," kind of like how Ash and Miranda had real-people faces.

We need less pretty people in our games, man. Time to re-evaluate our standards of beauty.

Ashley is beautiful. I dont know her face model but miranda model Yvonne is also beautiful

Yeah, a fauxhawk is pretty douche-adjacent. His muscles don't have much tone, so they seem like they're there just for aesthetic purposes, which could also be a sign of a douchebag. They don't seem like combat muscles at all. Not to mention, the likelihood he'll be doing anything that will require heavy lifting or strength is between slim and none. No arm-wrestling Reapers, I imagine.

I said new players, then I specified they're probably into GOW. And again, I say, by no stretch of the imagination was I ever saying Vega would be or is the main reason, or even a big reason, for why new players might get into Mass Effect. He's just another thing on the pile of things BioWare is doing to appeal to GOW holdouts and new players. I never said all of them are dudebros, just enough of them for BioWare to introduce a character obviously geared toward dudebros. I should have clarified that.

Now I'm not sure what the fatally-vague term "media" has anything to do with this, but sure.

Yes, guys who play a TPS full of herculean muscly men feel that is the kind of thing they want in their games and therefore Vega appeals to them.

Has it not occurred to you at all that this crap you're coming out with might be far fetched?

Everyone I know thinks in that shot Vega looks like a ******. Some of those people haven't played Mass Effect. Some of them have played GoW. All of them have played CoD. I can quite safely say, Vega does not appeal to them, end of.

How far-fetched, that a piece of entertainment media try to appeal to a possible consumer by featuring something that possible consumer is known to appreciate in another piece of entertainment media.

I'm assuming you know the several million GOW fans there are? You are not a standard of gaming, which is why your dozen GOW-playing friends are irrelevant. Wait, what's that? You know people? And some of those people think what? And some fo those people that think that are actually even part of the group that I'm talking about? The outliers are overwhelming here, I guess I'm done.

The difference, of course, between you and I is that what I'm saying is 100% conjecture. But what you say, oh that's "end of".

The difference between what you and I are saying, is that you are making
sweeping generalisations with no evidence backing up your BS in the
slightest, whereas I am arguing against you with anecdotal evidence
which you respond to with more generalisations.

Sweeping generalizations, like "some GOW fans like video games with muscular guys" and "fauxhawks are dumb" and "BioWare tries to attract new players". The wrath of my view is heavy-handed, so that they might call it "Mjölnir" and be heralded as prophets.

Check out this anecdotal evidence: Both my roommates think GOW is dumb and that Final Fantasy 7 is totally badass. End of.

Oh yeah, but they were real-people beautiful (at least, their faces were).

Unlike that bullsh*t that happens when it's pretty much the same face over and over.  It happens in manga and comics all the time because the artist/author is stuck on one definition of pretty, and it makes me want to beat him/her over the head with a hardcover copy of their latest release.

Oooh, gotcha, I thought ya'll meant an announced model.

Anyway, I'm glad they went for more of a normal-bro face for Vega. God forbid the day BioWare turns all of their main characters into anime-like Final Fantasy pretty sunflowers. (Jokez, I love FF, and I know that is just the particular style of their videogames)

Buuut it is cool to have games in which not every character looks like they came out of a magazine. I mean, even though the plastic surgery advances are probably super duper cool or whatever in the ME universe, unaltered genes means that the entire human population does not necessarily need to be physically attractive.

Agreed so hard. Even worse when it's in the same manga and you can only tell the guys/girls apart by clothing or by someone saying their name.

I think they were stuck on it because animation is expensive.

Hoo boy.  All the mangas I gave up on because I couldn't tell people apart.

Not to knock the artist's style or anything, but GOD DAMN IT IS THIS THE PROTAGONIST, THE BEST FRIEND, OR THE RIVAL I'M LOOKING AT RIGHT NOW?

God bless South Park for the "everyone is bald and hatless" episode.  Ladies and gentlemen, the lampshade hang.

Nail on the head there. That is why you only see variation between shows for the most part. Shows that use the same style as another (like back during the 80s-90 to the current moe blob) are mostly working on a budget or are being lazy.

His body type is outlandish & doesn't fit in with everyone else regarding the ME universe character model. Too much shake weight, I say.

You don't animate comics and manga.  The sh*t's drawn on paper.

But animated or not, it isn't too difficult to at least tweak stuff a little so you're not drawing the same damn face all the god damn time.

Guys... you do realize that the face of Vega is almost the exact same as the VA for him?

Check IMDB... the voice of Vega has been revealed and the dude looks exactly like his video game counter part.

So yeah...

Do yourself a favor: go outside. This might be difficult since your probably glued to your computer chair. Take a trip to a gym and guess what you'll see. A LOT of these "outlandish" body types. Yes - there are people who have muscles on top of muscles and they certaintly didn't get them by playing video games....

I must say Vega puzzles me, with a gazzlion npcs in the 2 previous games why introduce another generic caucasican spacemarine dude? This guy seems like Jacob II without even the racial diversity card. I know he is supposed to be a introductionary character if you killed of your ME2 squad, but still even if there are no asians in the 22th century, why not a batarian? Wouldn't have been any extra animation work.

There isn't any extra animation work - all animation work is done through the bones. The model we see is just a mesh that is overlayed on top of the bones. Animations are rarely ever specific to each mesh. You can use the MIranda model as Jacob so to speak.

While there is a line between laziness and necessity there is a reason for it cheeze. Time constraints, budget, character design all play into this trope.

For example lets say you give a character a very outlandish and complicated costume and hair design. That takes time and energy to create, and you have to draw that same character constantly over a long period of time (especially in animation). Making the face simple is one "shortcut" to help ease the burden on time, energy, you get the idea.

Now if I remember correctly you are an artist so you should understand this somewhat. When a manga is being made the mangaka does most of the art herself and by herself. Any assistance she recieves will usually be filling in the background, lines, and at the most extreme background characters.

Its not a simple issue.

Of course when the artist is able to differentiate everyone it really does help doesn't it?

i just hope his personality doesnt fit the stereotype weve all already placed on him. i dont want to think at any point "i could have written this crap" when im getting to know vega. and i dont want to know what stereotypical tank guy dialogue vegas going to say before he says it. i dont mind the body type. id imagin a soldier in the year 2147 would look exactly like vega. but i just dont want to know everything about him just by looking at him.

i think in the short term hell fail because hes replaceing wrex and grunt. if vegas any less of a character we already had that was better, then hes a waste of my time.
