Yeah so that's my question and I know I can still keep my LI provided that they are "hardened". Can I be king without doing anything bad to Alistair such as exile or executing him?

I don't think you can ever become "king" per se - the closest you can get is to have Anora rule as Queen and you become Consort, but that can only happen if you're playing a noble male PC in vanilla (unmodded) mode, or are using a mod that ignores the 'noble PC' only rule.
To rule as Consort, Alistair must kill Loghain - your PC can't do it since Anora will never marry her father's killer.

You cannot "choose" to make your Warden the King of Ferelden, but there is a rarely occurring quest that allows you to pull Axameter from the stone:
