That said, it has both it's good and, well... not really "bad" moments per se, but perhaps overdone moments. I mean, to get one niggle out the way, how many times are these action moments going to begin with Reapers stomping around and beaming things resulting in Shepard being shaken up and/or crumbling debris sending him rolling down something before resuming gameplay? It was impressive and neat when I first saw it in the Anderson/Earth demo with that shockwave sending them sliding down, but after a similar occurrence in the Legion/On-the-rails demo and now in this so-called trailer, I can it's going to get old fast if it occurs much more in the game. Seems everywhere Shepard goes he/she can expect an earthquake and some tumbling.
My other main beef is basically, "Oh yay... more action, TPS style gameplay. Just what I want to see more of!" </sarcasm> <_<. To be expected to a degree I know, but perhaps this relates to my first point: an actual trailer that illustrated various aspects of the game and not just combat, explosions and Reapers shaking Shepard up would have been more appealing. It's easier to swallow in smaller doses and when peppered with a few other aspects besides "Action! Action! Action!"
That said, the cinematics and transitions are good and well-directed. I did love the initial image of the fighters zooming overhead and the Maw vs. the Reaper was well done. Not too much shaky-cam or 2 second shots, and everything was nice and focused. Good to see the overall style of cinematic direction remains consistent/classic and it hasn't been taken too over-the-top and modernized. I'm still not a fan of these mini-crab tank Reapers because they seem to be the same thing I've seen before in dozens of games lately, but I guess there's not much I can do about that and I'll just have to put up with them. The section of gameplay itself looks kind of interesting (i.e. with Shepard advancing and trying to avoid the deadly red beams and Reaper feet), but I'd have to actually feel how it plays and experience it directly to really judge it. I can see from the style it could either be really fun, or fall victim to being annoying, depending on execution. It'll depend on how random or scripted the section is, and how punishing it can be or not. Too on-the-rails and predictable and it doesn't feel dynamic, but too random and punishing and it becomes frustrating. It'll be interesting to see how it balances.
So, overall, a tad disappointing, but nothing that really makes me roll my eyes or rage. Again, largely due to expectations I admit, but while it impressed me somewhat with some neat moments, it didn't outright "Wow!" me overall. Perhaps if the Reaper vs. Maw thing hadn't been spoiled right at the start of ME3's advertising in the Gameinformer article it would have been a different story. That said, at least when they show this, I'm not being spoiled with anything massively awesome prior to playing I had no prior knowledge to. It's both a blessing and curse in that regard, but overall I think I'd rather be surprised and "wowed!" in the game itself rather than by a trailer (sorry... "trailer").
Now that's what I call "constructive criticism". We need more people like this and less "BIOWARE RUINED ME3 dfah Too much action!!!"
And in regards to the bolded statement, I agree... I'm really hoping Bioware would start showing off the hub worlds and more of Clint's music.
In fact, make the next trailer be a combination on hub worlds, RPG elements, and Clint Mansell's music for ME3 and we have a winner!
Anyways, very good analysis, Terror_K.

Noticed how much people managed to dissect that trailer. It seemed alright, wasn't expecting much anyway, though actually seeing the Thresher take on the Reaper was pretty epic.

not in a negative way... more in a " It didn't show anything that ' to me' was adding to the hype or incentive to buy. I saw it as a very generic " make it fast and flashy to attract more people who like fast and flashy" It didn't offer anything I didn't already expect from the series as far as combat goes.
which on that note is the only thing that really gets attention is combat, and while I can enjoy it as a whole it's the very very very last thing I look for in a game really to the point that it's moot.

Watch this and tell me just how much this highlights all the features of the game it is showing - and that is a 3 minute trailer so there is a lot of time for something other that WOW and eyecandy:

While I thought it was nifty to see the fabled Colossal Thrasher Maw of lore ( I remember the Cerberus news bit on it) I was over all unimpressed.

I think what bummed me out was that it didn't even show combat, it showed awkward running, falling, dust and 'press button for cutscene'
So I mean.. I don't know what bit was supposed to get anyone excited

And that's really what it was made for. Of course if you analyze it a few things will materialize you might not like. Terror_K has mentioned them. But it's not made for analysis but for getting into the scene, experiencing it and getting an idea of how certain gameplay elements are used. It does that very well, even while not showing anything that we knew would be there.

Haven't we seen enough combat? I'm glad they showed something that was not about shooting enemies for a change.

I agree with this. Bioware has shown nothing but the same old. I can understand trying to attract a broader adiance but show something for us older fans. Just because most of us played the last two installments doesn't gurantee our monedy.

And since we finally got to hear a short comment from James Vega, I thought I'd mention that the voice acting for his character is phenomenal -- can't wait to talk about it more when we reveal the cast list!
Calling it now...Casey Hudson is Vega...

Watched the trailer again and it's a good summary of what you'll play, but the experience will be by far much better, less linear, and more extensive when you have the game in your hands.

Had to be done.

Seriously. Very underwhelming. As people have mentioned, it is not a trailer, it is gameplay footage. A trailer is an artistic arrangement of footage showcasing the overall work. Also, the scene out of context just comes across as loud, bombastic, and in-your-face Michael Bay-I'm-trying-too-hard chaos. In the context of playing the game, I'm sure it will be awesome, but really how does that "trailer" differentiate you from other loud action games at the VGAs for people who aren't familiar with Mass Effect? Something unique like The Last of Us trailer is much more memorable than all of the Michael Bayesque "trailers" for games that blend together in a monotonous chaos.
Impersonal. That's the word I'm looking for. The whole thing feels very impersonal out of context, and that's bad decision making by marketing; marketing is not doing Mass Effect justice because Mass Effect is a very personal gameplay experience, characterized by relationships with squadmates and decision making. A real "trailer" with a focused look at Shepard communicating and working with his squadmates, something not dissimilar to the ME2 cinematic trailer (or even better the Distress Call TV spot from the original ME), would be much more appealing - to me at least.

But my issue is that it wasn't about anything
I personally don't want story trailers, so I am glad that they avoid that (and will remain grateful for that throughout), but then what else interests me is the combat and the customisation eg. powers, armor, weapons
When the clip shows Shepard running, and very occassionally pressing a button at a console, it makes the game look like you spend time running around, provoking cutscenes.. I am not even sure that is appealing marketing to newcomers, let alone the fanbase
I don't like ****ing over the marketing really, I am really just waiting on class videos now, but for me that video had nothing to recommend it.. and I am not sure what bit was supposed to be interesting or good

While that does show a lot more than the new ME3 trailer does and is more of "a trailer" in my mind, I wasn't think of something that highlights all the features of the game, but is mostly cinematic and shows different aspects beyond just "Action!"
More akin to these two trailers for the previous Mass Effect games:-
ME1 PC Trailer
ME2 Launch Trailer
I know some may cry "SPOILERS!!" but neither of those trailers show enough to really spoil that much directly that we didn't already know going into the game. And while both also show a great deal of action they show different forms of it, different places, different styles, different characters, and express emotion and feeling through the images and music. Mass Effect shouldn't just be about "Action! Shooting!" it should be about the emotions and gravitas of what's going on. Danger, suspense, romance, mystery, etc. and not just running and gunning. It basically needed some variety instead of being a slice of the same thing from start to finish.
Again though, this is due to expectations regarding it being a "trailer" when it really was more a slice of one particular section illustrating it. If they'd said something more specific like "Tuchanka Trailer" or something then fine, but even then the specific trailers for ME2 like the Grunt, Jack and Tali ones had a bit more to them, even with the focus on one character specifically. Again... not really a trailer, just a slice of gameplay, albeit with a bit of editing.
