Rpg's are fine - but they do sometimes get tedious. Grinding forever to level up something...get to a boss then rinse and repeat.

Don't get me wrong - love FF series. But I see nothing wrong with implementing an RPG system. ME1 was never suppose to be a strict RPG. In fact, ME1 had a lot of smoke and mirrors going on. Equipment wasn't important. Always equip the better gear. Always equip the better version of the mod. Powers were better in ME2 (yes, even adepts. If you know how to play an adept they're incredibly fun. People are just mad they can't spam singularity and have a room full of people float around.)

True.

And after ME1's inventory, I'd rather have all my things on the ship instead. At least there, they can't clog up my space and force me to convert the new stuff I find into omni-gel. God, that was so stupid.

The weapon mods for ME3 sounds way more interesting than they were in ME1 too.

To be fair, I wouldn't necessarily take a few moments of edited trailer as indisputable proof that everything is utterly linear.

It might be a bit presumptious of me to assume so, but since you are a fan of Mass Effect im guessing you are a fan or RPGs as well.  What is it about Skyrim that you dont like?  I really cant imagine any fans of RPGs to not like a game like Skyrim

Well, I'm playing RPGs because of the characters and the story, not the quests. And I don't find sandbox RPGs to be so much fun either. Just tacks on more time it takes to get from point A to point B.

Keep in mind that level grinding and big inventories aren't what make an RPG.

It's a roleplaying game, not a role-playing game.

Its hard for many people on this board to figure that out. Bethesda does exploration and sandbox very well but characterizations and characters are kind of a hit an miss with them.

I am in no way saying ME should be a sandbox, but having sandbox exploration on planets with more detail would be spectacular. Would break up and compliment combat nicely. Where, however, is the demonstrative evidence ME3 is not linear? That trailer segment looked VERY linear.

I really hope that you're aware of the fact that the trailer was heavily edited to focus on the gameplay.

WRONG!!!

If Modern Warfare has action in their game trailers and if Mass Effect has action in their gametrailers they are automatically the same game just with different settings!

Oh I know. It's just that I think everyone else on this forum tends to think like this so I'm going by their own definition. My definition of an RPG is when you're taking on the role of someone..rather generic - but RPG is turning more and more into a subjective point of view.

Sadly, I was a bit underwhelmed with the trailer on the VGAs. It has no impact on whether or not I buy the game (I'm definitely buying the game), but as a teaser trailer, it just didn't do much... teasing.

Honestly, the trailer made it look like any other space marine game. Show me more than the back of Shepard's head, and two aliens fighting each other.

If the leaked script has proven anything, Mass Effect 3 is very, very linear.

It has?

And here I thought it proved that the player can choose multiple outcomes in the same conflict, who lives and who dies. What kind of support you'll get and how the player progresses towards the goal down the road.

If ME3 is linear, then ME1 was just a straight line.

And so a new BSN meme was born.

Seriously though, standalone RPGs(in video games) never "really" existed. Dungeon Crawlers, Hack N' Slash, Turn Based Gameplay. That's what they're traditionally draped over, people are just mad because now Bioware is choosing to pick up the pace. Shooters are a hot Genre now, and this isn't even the first shooter RPG, that title belongs to Deus Ex.

The reality of Mass Effect is that it makes no sense for a special Ops soldier to not know how to work a gun, especially not one with the rank of Commander. It also doesn't make sense for him to grab the guns off everyone he kills since everything comes off a conveyor belt now, and in the future we'll be able to personally synthesize anything we'd like.

I will concede that speech skills should've stayed in, outside of that though, an elite training operative should know how to hack if he has a tool on his hand that turns it into a minigame, he should know how to apply first aid and ammo, while perhaps not your favorite system has been implemented in shooters accross the board since Doom for a reason.

A game does not have to be a ****ty shooter to have solid RPG systems since core gameplay has never needed to suffer for it before.

No biggie. I'm just a little tired of people pulling stuff out of their asses and presenting it as fact.

It's the slippery slope school of thought, quite popular in gaming circles.

Actually I believe someone in the ME games said that's only inside science-fiction.  I took that as a jab at Star-Trek...

At the very least we know EDI can make as many replicas of any weapon as you need, so loot is still moot(at least in ME2/3)

Instead of "Commander" I'd say "N7 operative" but yes, it pretty much sums up what I've yelled to my screen when I see that my Infiltrator could barely aim with her sniper rifle.

N7 is what I meant by Special Ops, I just meant to drive the point further by making it clear that Shepard would've started with extensive real combat knowledge due to his rank.
