Run the installer with admin privileges.

there is something i read about on the web that was for mass effect 2 but it seems to work with me 1 is when you encounter the insufficient permissions in vista create a mass effect folder in program files, then hit back the retry to custom install and it works (at least it did for me).

Just keep trying, and create a mass effect folder in program files.
you may just have a picky dvd burner like me.
but i do plan on buying a blu ray player for my pc sometime later.

i think i know what was causing my problems it was zone alarm (i found out on the web that it now has a 3rd party app that tracks things you do on the web i forget the name of the app) but since i started using comodo firewall i no longer have problems with games
