I love how a fictional urban myth has mutated into an actual urban myth.

The guy at the Bachelor party on Ilium did mention the Asari's belly button, and the Salarian acknowledged that he saw it, too. That could be some evidence that they do look like us.

That they manipulate your perception of them doesn't mean that they look different. Compare it to a friend of yours. He/she may not be the most beautiful person in the world, but you associate positive things with his/her face, so you will always be happy to see his/her face. Especially if you need a friend. Something like that.

The human mind is a funny thing. That's why different people have different taste and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

that and it directly mentioned in the first book that their was quite a shock when humans ventured to the citadale because we resembled the asari which led to a whole new understanding of the processes of adaptive evolution. ( paraphrased slightly but the whole thing was like two sententences.
and what I mentioned before...

Or, you know, the fact that they can wear human female armor.   Oh, and the fact those guys were drunken idiots obviously put in the game as a joke.

Then there's this from Revelation:

Edan didn’t like humans, either. Like his own species, they were bipedal. Similar in height, the humans were thicker in the torso, arms, and legs. They had short, stubby necks and square, blockish heads. And like all binocular species, their faces seemed lacking in character and intelligence. Instead of nostril slits they had an odd jutting protuberance for a nose. Even their mouths were strange, their lips so full and puffy it was a wonder they didn’t slur their speech. He actually thought they closely resembled the asari—another race Edan didn’t like.

For the Avina display, it pops up using the identity of the one using the console but it was not created just by humans so the display would be on the perception of the creator. But, for the bachelor-party, it was because of the asari's ability to make the species attracted to them so they were defending their 'perception' because of the attraction set on by the asari since most of the races have some who do not go to other races for relationships, they were basically defending that they look a certain way to connect the traits to reason for their attraction. That's why one of them asked if the asari was 'tricking' them. But taking a shot out of an asari's 'belly-button' doesn't sound like such a bad idea.

If they don't really look like humans and are in fact manipulating our minds to make them THINK they look like hot human women, then I imagine they look something like this:

Mmm yeah, that's Miss September right there....

Nonsense.

They look like they look in-game. Enough about this already.

this whole bit started over a drunk turian/human and salarian having a brofest bachelor party  with a table dancer...

each pointed out 1 thing that made them say asari were similar to them.... but there are countless references in books and games that asari are the closest species to humans ( in apperance that is. )
I also site one of the voice clips of a turian npc talking to femshep asking if she was a female, because she has those weird bumps on her chest like asari do...hence how he determines the difference between male and female humans. Female humans look like asari with hair

Kinda wonder if the whole thing has something to do with the myth about biotics(at least human biotics) being able to control minds. It's not true but that doesn't mean people (and I'm talking about characters in the game) won't believe it.

Always wanted my Shepard to reply to this line with "No, sweetie, he just carries pencils in his pocket."

No, this whole bit started over a statement that all races find asari beatiful. Which was after ME1, bachelor party is a reference to it. And now we are discussing myth from reference to myth. Or not a myth. I personally think that their eyes are naturally black.

Since they wear ME1 human armour, we do know their body is human-like (be it male of female - ME1 armour is unisex).

edit: yeah, those funny things, I guess that makes them look like human females

Mordin theorizes lots of stuff.  Like, for instance, that the virus he's studying might be trolling him.  Best not to assume everything he says is scientific gold.
