As long as it fits under a helmet and doesn't get in his face while he's fighting, sure.
This woman knows how to do it:

Long hair? Make a BUN

He can tie it back if he needs to. Otherwise long flowing hair FTW.
So if I'm stuck with the buzzcuts and styles dude Shep has currently I'm gonna be pissed.

As long as my dude Shep's hair can be that long (and covering the ears as well) I'm happy.

Your changing the subject. Facial hair is a different story. In contrast I dont have a problem with standarized facial hair now, in the future, or in fiction. As long as it doesn't affect your ability in the battlefield and the style is dictated by rank and experience.(Do you really think it would look good if a private had a beard?) The reason why most Western military's got rid of it was because of the threat of WMD weapons.

So yeah realism isn't a good reason for anything. Consistency and suspension of disbelief work far better. I just want the hair because it'd look good. Screw realism. And for those that SoD would be broken all they have to do is not pick one of the longer hairstyles. Voila.

That's short sided. Most of the technology that's presented in the ME universe is theoretical or made to be believable. Almost every science fiction series has had science team to refer to.

There are plenty of historical examples of long hair in western militaries. The biggest reason for short now being the standard was fleas and lice in the trenchesMass Effect Player wrote...

Also, this is the best argument.
If you don't like the idea of a long haired Sheppard, don't choose long hair.

Alright maybe it does. Doesn't make everything in the game perfectly realistic.
And FYI *points at Miranda and Ash* fighting in long hair has a precendent in ME universe. It's not like Shep can't tie it back when he/she needs to put on a helmet.
Hell my Shep spends most of the battlefield with just the Sentry Visior on he has no head protection. Let's not forget this is a game and style will sometimes trump how realistic something looks (like pretty much everyone in ME2's outfit).

Don't you see we need both beards *and* long hair? Otherwise, how are we to have a Jesus Shepard? Think, guise, think!

Your talking to guy who is about to join the military and who is a military science and history nut. I know their are historical example of beards in militaries. The Combat engineers in France are allowed to have beards the U.S. Navy allowed Admirals to have beards in up until the 70's.
