Actually, Duncan got killed by one of those Alpha Genlock guys. The ogre didn't even get a hit in, just got stabbed a bunch of times and fell over.

I believe that Duncan is incapacitated by the Ogre, since when he kills him he's clearly clutching his chest indicating that he's received an injury. If it weren't for the two nameless soldiers dying around him, his party would have survived and likely he and Maric would hobble off the  battlefield with just an open wound or broken arm.
But, you're right, it's the alpha that deals the finishing blow.

As soon as Riordan volunteered to be the one to kill the archdemon, I thought "Whelp, I guess it's up to me and Alistair, cause this guy sure ain't going to make it."

It's sort of like the "I only have three days until retirement" line. It means certain death.

Or Jory the exact moment he mentioned having a family. In fact, the only way Jory could have died quicker is if he talked about how long he had 'til retirement.

Riordan strikes me as badass, but what I really feel is:

Every single Warden you encounter that ISN'T you or Alistair is a Rambo with blades.

It's like the world would just be safe if you had at least 2 Wardens a country.

As long as they NEVER talk to a Grey Warden that has a camera 5 feet behind them. Then you only have about 3 scenes to live.

LOL! At least their last ones are usually super combat dramatic, to give'm any points.

Or if he, all at once, talked about how he had a family, was going to be able to retire soon, AND would make it so some part of the game would be simpler while he's alive. The combination of those three is like attacking a High Dragon with a rusty knife.

Both Duncan and French Duncan had awesome exits. I mean, climbing up an ogre with knives/riding a flying archdemon are pretty good ways to go.

I actually really did like Riordan, though. When he was staring into the cage I was like, "OOH! SYMBOLIC!" but in a good kinda way.

Duncan got owned by an Ogre. This guy nearly killed an Archdemon.

Pfft, one Archdemon? It took an entire army to take down Duncan. Image IPB

In the game, Riordan mentions that both he and Duncan went through the Joining together. So of course they both would be awesome.

Riordan and Riordan went through the joining together? I wouldn't have thought of that as a common name.

Do you mean Duncan and Riordan? If so, maybe the blood they drank was from some sort of awesome darkspawn. It would explain their shared awesomeness.

Wait, don't you mean Alistair? Alistair tries to introduce him, but vaguely remembers his name and that he was one of the survivors from his joining.

Memory could be hazy, or maybe he did multiple Joinings to multiply his awesomeness?

No, Riordan and Duncan went through the Joining together. But Riordan was present during Alistair's Joining.

Either you're remembering wrong or Riordan was there to supervise the joining, since there's no way that they could be from the same Joining. Remember, until you came along Alistair was the newest Warden, and Riordan knows that the taint will claim him soon.

I thought he was present at Alistair's joining but not...uhh, Joining in, or being Joined, or whatever they would call it. He was just an observer.

I wonder if multiple Joinings would have any effect...or do you just get more of those crappy amulets?

more crappy amulets, LOL!

Hmm, since you're immune to the taint I guess that'd just give you extra badass points for voluntarily drinking more? Who knows.

I got the impression Duncan was already injured by the battle before he killed the ogre. He's lying on the ground after Cailan is dead, pulls himself together and charges the ogre, killing it, then staggers off to die, knowing the battle is lost as he looks up at the beacon and sees no reinforcements.

And yeah, I love Riordan. So badass. And without him, there would have been no opportunity to kill the archdemon.

Though, of course, when he said he was going off on his own I knew he was a dead man. I was hoping I might get him in my group, but then it would be too easy a final decision, since he's not only senior but close to his expiry date -- might as well go out killing the Archdemon, he's only got a few more years left max before he has to go down to the Deep Roads.

That was a sweet and very oblique reference to the phrase deus ex machina.  I commend you.
