Running Windows 7 x64. It may well be that I need directx9 installed but windows 7 ships with Dx11 and there is no option that I can see on steam to install Dx9 before installing JE (as I understand happens when you install through CD etc). How the hell do I install Dx9?? Any other solutions? It worked fine on my old Vista laptop and I'm desperate to get it working on my new one!!

Where do you make the connection between the error message "Failed to find Steam" and DX9? To me it looks like there's some problem with the Steam client and not (directly) with Jade Empire. I never saw that error message myself, but it seems very common. Google has almost 60,000,000 hits on that one.

I honestly don't think so. My other games from Steam are working fine, but Jade Empire is not.

Can anyone suggest a fix for this please? Thanks.

The issue is caused by games that look for the default Steam install directory in Program Files. If you run a 64 bit Windows OS your Steam directory is installed to Program Files (x86) instead. The issue will also arise if you've installed Steam to any directory other than Program Files.

A quick work-around is to simply reboot steam then reboot the game. There may very well be a more permanent solution but I was happy enough with the band aid fix and never bothered.

This band-aid fix does not work. Is this ever going to be fixed?

Alas, probably not. But I do have another band-aid fix for you to try:

1) Go into the Jade Empire Steam folder (usually C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\Jade Empire).
2) Rename JadeEmpireLauncher.exe to anything (e.g. JadeEmpireLauncherBlah.exe).
3) Rename JadeEmpire.exe to JadeEmpireLauncher.exe
4) Go to Steam, click Play, don't open the config, ta dah!

You should be able to edit resolution and such under the settings, so it's no major harm done from losing the config. I don't have a mouse cursor when playing though, which is really annoying, but if you get used to using the arrow keys or have a controller it shouldn't be too difficult. But, yeah, still a big nuisance there.

If that doesn't work:
5) Change the JadeEmpire.exe properties (probably now JadeEmpireLauncher, but you get the picture) to run in administrator, and set Compatability Mode to XP Service Pack 2.

There may be a better way to fixing it than I tell you but that's what I used.

I had this problem, too, when I wanted to play JE a few weeks ago. Starting Steam in compatibility mode for XP SP3 (not the game - Steam!) did the trick for me. Steam warns that the mode could cause problems when you start it for the first time after the change, but so far it all works fine.

I have windows 8 64 bit operating system, and I've been having problems starting Jade Empire too, it gives me the cannot locate steam error, I tried fixing it, but then it gave me some other error about not starting. I'm getting really depressed.
