Hey everyone

Since some of us have managed to secure the book... and read it before it's even published, we could have some sort of dicussion. I'll share details of the book to whoever is interested.

SPOILER WARNING  - If you do not want to be spoiled with details of the book do not read on. You have been warned.

Some things we learnt:
- It is possible to reverse the rite of tranquility. I quote "I realised early on that Tranquility wasn't repairable on this side of the Fade. It needed to be done from the other side. A spirit had to bridge the gap - it could only do that if it knew exactly where to look. The Rite renders the Tranqui invisible to spirits." The Rite renders a Tranquil undesirable to a demon because to them, a Tranquil is nothing more than an inanimate object that will resist possession. So by luring a spirit or demon to attempt to possess a Tranquil, the act of trying will bridge the gap between a Tranquil and the Fade and they will be cured.

- The Divine, as we know, is a close friend of Leliana and she is interested in reform for the mages. But traditions and many people who do not share that belief are in her way. In fact, she aids the mages in the book.

- The Seekers of Truth seems to be more complicated than we think. Apparently, some time during the twentieth year of the Divine Age, "the Nevarran Accord was signed [where] the Seekers of Truth lowered [their] banner to serve as the right hand of the Chantry and together, [they] created the Circle of Magi." The Seekers are led by a Lord Seeker and it seems like they are the "overarching" authority of Templars all over Thedas. The Lord Seeker seems to have dominion over all the Kight Commanders and is essentially their "boss". Confusingly, Leliana is also part of the Seekers as is Cassandra Pentaghast but they seem to be another "faction" of the Seekers more loyal to the Divine perhaps. I'm not entirely sure if these are two distinct organisations or factions within the same "Seeker".

 - All the Circle of Magi in Thedas has rebelled.  The Seekers, or at least those who control the Templars, have decided to declare the Nevarran Accord (above) null and void since there is no more Circle. They have also decided to divorce themselves from the Chantry seeing that the Divine helped the mages.

Very interesting. I get the feeling Bioware included being able to reverse a tranquil for a reason.

It's most likely to allow an explanation for Feynriel if he is in future games as a companion. This just makes it more and more clear Bioware will have Feynriel as our companion regardless of what Hawke did to him.

My question: How would you describe Shale's attitude towards mages in this book? The same or more open?

Does the book explain how the Divine goes from trying to crush the mage rebellion in Kirkwall to supporting them in their struggle for freedom?

Sweet.

I find the revelation that Tranquility can be reversed interesting, to say the least. Partly because it actually includes some specifics as to what Tranquility actually does, and part because omgoshyoucanreverseit? Doesn't sound like it's either easy or remotely safe, mind.

I'm not sure why Anders ought to listen to Hawke, who he just met, over his past lover who's pleading to be euthanised.

[edit] Mmm. I'm currently wondering if they're setting up that 'you can cure Tranquility, but it's hella dangerous dawg' thing in preperation to present that exact scenario to the player one day, where they have to decide if they want to attempt trying to reverse a Tranquil'd mage companion at the risk of them being possessed. And if not, they totally should.

I'd imagine it involves:

1)  Sending a mage into the Fade
2)  Having said mage find a demon/spirit and convince it to attempt possession of the tranquil mage.

I've always wondered why killing Merrill in the Fade doesn't render her tranquil.  Now I wonder how that would fit into this revelation (must think on this).

That's very rude.  I never have personally insulted you in any way.  When I make my comments, they are directed at the game or characters in the game.  This is not the first time you have said something rude that was personally directed at me, and I've often seen you do it to others that do not agree with your glorious opinions.  Grow up

And it definitely would be tough. You have to risk being possessed by a demon yourself or put up a convincing argument for a spirit to even consider it.

edit: or Hawke just sort of gave them wake-up slaps and didn't kill them.

Does the book go into detail as to why every Circle in Thedas rebels at the same time? Thats something that bugged me at the end of DA2, as its not like its a world of instant communication where you'd think rebellion like that would spread fast necessarily.

Does it explain what sort of rebellion the mages are undertaking? I mean, are we talking massive armies of mages trying to establish an independent Mage state or just a bunch of hipster, emo mages like Anders doing random acts of violence with no apparent thought as to a realistic end goal?

Is there one big event in the book that precipitates every Circle going into rebellion, or are we supposed to think that what Anders did in DA2 was enough?


So (correct me if I'm wrong), basically by the end of the book:

All of the Mage Circles have rebelled all across Thedas (why?). The Chantry, due in large part to the Divine's pro mage attitude, basically splinters, with only one faction of Seekers (Leliana and Cassandra's group) still supporting the Divine and another faction of Seekers basically dissociating themselves from the Divine.

So do the Seekers basically end up taking the Templars with them when they rebel? So you have Seekers and Templars no longer affiliated with the Chantry going against the rebel mages, while the Divine and her smaller group of Seekers supports the mage rebellion? Or is the Divine and her part of the Chantry rendered powerless once the mages rebel and the Seekers break off?


You mentioned in the other thread that they go to the Western Approach and up to the Abyssal Reach. Do they describe the geography or environment of that region? Is it like a desert, cold, dry...?

And who exactly is travelling across the Western Approach and why? Do they have some final destination they're trying to reach out west?

Yes...they would be hard to find.

Demons would practically line up to help you...they're so nice XD

You'd probably have to find one of Compassion or Generosity.

Chances are though it'll be nigh impossible to find the Good Samaritan of the Fade.

Could always be because Feynriel was a dreamer, and thus his connection to the Fade is different. I mean, it's mentioned that he and others like him have the capability to kill others in their dreams, but I'm assuming not everyone who just has a nightmare dies.

Or... something. I really ought to leave all this hypothetical theorycrafting to Ethereal Writer.
