Reposting here since I posted in the wrong sub-forum.

I finally decided to kill Vido on an ME2 playthrough, and, as expected, it pretty much left a sour taste in the my mouth. Especially the screaming in passages while the unseen slaves burn to death as Shep fights his way through - creepy!

Random thoughts:

- I'm kinda bummed that there was not a more "dignified" way for Shepard to ignore/sacrifice the slaves at the refinery to kill Vido (similar to when Shep kills the Rachni). Vido is slime - the guy is a vicious murderer that has killed a lot of people already, and if you let him live (my usual choice to save the slaves) he'll probably go on killing more people than those that died at the refinery, as well as have a bounty out for Shep's and Zaeed's heads.

- I wish there was a way for Shep to not smile when he agrees with Zaeed to kill Vido, or maybe do something afterwards for the dead slaves (private ceremony or something).

Agreed. I only took the Renegade option once on a Soldier to get the extra assault rifle damage upgrade and the screaming was enough to make me say "never again".

That makes it all the better IMO. No clear-cut everyone-wins situation, no escaping the consequences of your actions. Which is worse - letting people burn to death, or letting scum get away to do whatever? I want more of those hard and there's no completely right answer choices.

I suppose Shep smiling is because it's the renegade choice so a truly renegade Shep might well do.

Vido is a sociopath that is in power of a large criminal/mercanery organization. Even Zaed hates them.

Wow. The screaming didn't really bother me. It was more annoying than anything else. But I'm more of a renegade than the neutered version of Shepard in ME2. It disturbed me how easily Shepard would shoot people in the head in ME1 for just looking at him the wrong way. I didn't feel that level of ruthlessness in ME2.

I can see how the screaming might be unnerving for some, but for me it was just background noise.

Though, the 'save the hostages or kill Vido' starts to feel contrived the more I think of it. I mean, if you save the hostages Vido gets away because it's the one time Shepard forgets about the stealth frigate in orbit with guns. If you go after Vido, hostages die ultimately because Alliance Military Doctrine for N7 Commando units clearly states that the Commanding Officer will never be accompanied by more than two soldiers at one time.

The decision in this mission to sacrifice the slaves to get the target pretty much mirrors what Saren did on the mission with Anderson. It is just one more choice along Saren's path.

Either way, Both Shepard and Saren were trying to stop a Sociopath. A sociopath in a powerful position. So going after them is a good idea. But is it the Ethical one?
