(Hopefully thats all the info needed)

I have  read through the list of known issues, and google searched the forums for my specific problem but cannot seem to find anything. I even attempted to use the Live help service that EA has, and without intending any offence - I found them to be really very unhelpful.

The Issue -

During The Final Onslaught in Denerim I have gone from the beginning, through the Marketplace and Alienage to kill the Generals without any problem whatsoever, I then am switched to the secondary party to begin the quest "Hold the Gates" and it requires me to speak to the Officer to begin the fight. However whenever I get a step or 2 away from the Officer it simply crashes to the desktop. I get the error message "Dragon Age Origins has stopped working" Windows searches for a solution, fails and then its gone.

I can run around, I can go everywhere else with the same group at the gate, change gear, Do aything except for approach the Officer, and attempt to interact with him in any way.

In case it makes a difference, I have had only one issue in the entirety of the game - that was with the Fade ritual where you send a party member to save the kid in redcliffe, I was forced to send Irving because it would not allow Morrigan or Wynne to go. However this wasn't a game killer, I simply sent Irving instead. With the Officer issue, I HAVE to speak to him.

I have dialed down all the settings to the minimum, Lowest Graphics, Texture Detail, Aliasing etc etc - no difference.
I attempted to change the Core Affinity thing to 4,5,6 and 7 (as I believe is appropiate for my system) and No difference at all.
I even tried changing the controlled party member to others to see if that affected it and it didn't.

I am unsure of what else I should be attempting - Since I cannot find any other post with regards to the "Officer" in that specific quest, I figured it was worth creating a thread and hoping that someone could advise me on a way to fix it.

Thanks in advance.

*Edit to add* I've been playing with it, and got it working again. It seems to be something to do with one of the options, though for the life of me I cannot work out which one since I turned all the options back to max again and its absolutely fine.

Sorry for the waste of forum space!

After such a detailed report, I was wondering if anyone had any better ideas than the usual sickied ideas I could guess. Would be interesting to know what would happen if you were to try that situation with going into the Fade again. When you couldn't send an actual party member, was the failure mode the same? i.e. Crash to desktop?

The core affinity business is interesting to me because I have never had a problem that I can be sure was caused by it. Though I have a 2-core system which my research tells me is what is best for DAO. I wonder if your affinity setup for DAO would be improved if you ran with two instead of
four? Assuming you have enough clock spead across two for the number crunching.

It was exactly the same, same error of Windows searching for a solution and then crashing when the whole Fade thing came up. Irving and Jowan HAD to be used, though I don't know whether it would crash if you sent The Warden as a mage.

I will be playing it through again with a different Origin story, so if i come to the same issue with the Fade section again I'll try and play with the core affinity thing as well as the whole options just to see if theres any kind of idea of what exactly causes the problem for me. If I get anything I'll be sure to post!
