is it possible to not do the dark ritual and leave loghain behind at the gates in Denerim during the last battle? that way your warden is dead and loghain and alistair are both alive without having to do the dark ritual with morrigan
important question about loghain.

how?
isn't it OR Alistair OR Loghain?
when you choose for Alistair, you kill Loghain, and when you choose for Loghain Alistair leaves
I always thought you could only have one of the two

Confirmed.
Seeing both men at my funeral just made it that much more powerful. The ensuing epilogue also is pretty cool.

You have to negotiate a marriage between Anora and Alistair at Arl Eamon's, before the Landsmeet, I think. I don't *think* you have to harden Alistair, but it couldn't hurt.
Alistair still leaves the party when you recruit Loghain, but he remains in Ferelden to be king.

Pretty sure hardening Alistair isn't needed. Just make sure you make the deal that he marries Anora and then pick Loghain at the Landsmeet.

I thought he wouldn't stay to marry Anora if Loghain was spared unless he (Alistair) was hardened. My f!Mahariel brokered a marriage between an unhardened Alistair and Anora, on which he immediately reneged as soon as my Warden spared Loghain. He went off to be a drunk instead.

You have to harden Alistair to get him to marry Anora if you spare Loghain.

Guys, he wasn't asking if Alistair would stay in Denerim, just if the game could be played so that both Loghain and Alistair could live without the DR being done, ie. by leaving Loghain behind before facing the archdemon.
Don't need hardening or royal weddings for that. You can just leave Loghain at the gates, like the OP proposed.

Yes, but Alistair won't be around if you spare Loghain unless he's married to Anora. Now, he may not be dead mind you (though he could be if your warden wants it so), but he will be gone

Yes, if you spare Loghain and don't harden Alistair he will be exiled (provided that you ask Anora not to execute him) and will turn up in Kirkwall in DA2 as a drunk. So yes, both will live.
It is also possible to take Loghain with you to the archdemon and still do the sacrifice yourself. He will ask to be the one to do it but you can insist on doing it yourself. (Alistair, on the other hand, won't take no for an answer if you have ever romanced him, even if you or he ended it).
