To preface this, this is totally different than the "cd key is unregistered" issue. I've done a thorough search for my issue.
Me and my friend both bought NWN2: Plat on Steam. I bought a copy and gifted him the other. We both played on LAN for about 6 months, then he moved to another city.
Now, I can create an internet game, and he can try joining it, but it says "cd key already in use". He can join any other game, as can I. I also can't join a game of his for the same reason.
So, we check our CD-key in steam, and lo and behold, they are exactly the same for all 3 keys.
We also check nwncdkey.ini in the documents folder--they are identical too.
We've contacted steam for help, but since they take a long time to answer, does anyone else have a solution so we can just play the game together that we legally own? Thanks

What other solution could there be? You can't use the same keys. Sounds like Steam's gifting may not work. Even on LAN I thought I always had to have different keys on each machine to play, so I'm not sure how that was working for you.

There should be some way via Steam to check your keys - on both accounts.
If they are the same there - Steam should see that you bought two copies and send you another set of keys. Assuming Tarbosh in India is on the ball when he reads your email that is.

had the same problem as OP. Here is the solution:
1) Delete the Neverwinter Nights 2 directory from your Documents folder.
2) Right click on Neverwinter Nights 2 in steam. Hit properties
3) Select "Local Files". "Then select Verify Integrity of Game Cache".
After it finishes verifying and redownloading, your CD keys will be back to normal when you hit "View game CD Key" in steam. Next you'll have to start up NWN 2 and quit. The Neverwinter Nights 2 directory will be back in your Documents folder. Make a new CD key ini file in this directory. Call it nwncdkey.ini and use your keys from Steam.
It is formatted as follows:
[CDKEY]
Key1=
Key2=
Key3=

Before you delete anything, make sure you have it written down somewhere. Double check too!
