Did the Protheans always looked like Collectors - insect humanoids, or were they changed through millenia of reaper enslavery?

I don't believe they looked like the Collectors when they were Prothean.

If you talk to Mordin after the Collector Ship mission, he points out that the Reapers genetically modified the Protheans to suit their needs. Everything that wasn't necessary was replaced by tech, or discarded. Their genetic code is still Prothean, if I understand correctly, but they are far from what they used to be.

Collectors were based off the Protheans but they are not Protheans anymore in the strictiness sense.

Both humans and Apes are both considered to be Primates but we are totally different in appearance and intelligence.

Collector and the Prothean are the same way. Some DNA in common but not enough to be the same species.

Protheans are more Cthulu humans as of their statues.

Then how do you explain the N7: Archeological Dig Site mission where Shepard finds another Prothean beacon and has another vision like the one on Eden Prime, this time with a Collector clearly visible at the end?  My own opinion is that the developers changed ideas about how the Protheans looked between games.

Well Reapers were transforming them thru implants. IF you haven't notice that vision is about them changing into Collectors.

Reapers can change anything or one thru implants.

That video still contains images of the non-Collectorised Protheans.  The Collectors only appear at the very end.  The point is just to reinforce what we learned on the Collector Ship: the Protheans were heavily modified until they became Collectors.

As a side note, view that movie in slo-mo, pause it at the very end when the Collector makes its appearance, and check out the very, very poor photoshop job someone did pasting the Collectors in over the Protheans. Seriously, I could do a better job with MS-Paint.
