Not into medpacks. I don't see how it adds any real challenge. It is just an inconvenience or annoying extra button press to me. It really isn't that deep that I would ever call it extra challenge. Maybe it is just because of how I play.

Play Far Cry and you will know the improtance of med packs.

I'm wondering if he's played any games before this console generation with a statement like that.

Well, if someone can care enough to go back to even 2007 games, they can play UT3 which is a nice throwback to shooters, with classic health and armor system. I find the vehicle system kind of complex, but I still like it.

I've owned game systems since 1997, N64 being the first console I had. I have used many medpacks over the years, and never got special joy out of it. I just plain don't want to bother with it. I am not saying it is so important that they shouldn't exist for everyone else, but I just don't care for them. They have only ever annoyed me, not amped up the fun or challenge in my mind. Except in maybe Resident Evil scenarios. Long live the Green Herb there.

I'm a fan, especially if it works like it did in the leak beta (only regenerating 1/5)! Vanguards might be sad though...ah well more challenge!

Not really because this means that Medi-Gel is back again.... and Vanguards don't have to go to hiding each time they take a damage.

I have been playing since the health bar first appeared (the first computer in my house was around 1982).  It has never bothered me to actually do something in a video game to protect my health status as an asset.

I don;t know why they can't just return the health bar, at least for squad mates. I know every developer wants to seem edgy and innovative with new GUI schemes and layouts but really no one is going to fault you for having a nice simple block of health that increases when you gain health and decreases when you take damage. It works better than the ME2 system by far.

Well, it is a high risk/high reward scenario.

In some passive evolutions of the Soldier, you'll either gain a significant boost for melee attacks after killing an enemy with your heavy melee or it boosts the weapon damage for a slightly shorter time.

That could be worth the risk of getting exposed sometimes.

So, in other words: heavy risk, but the prize...?

So does it only regenerate 20% at a time in combat per "regenerate" or only to 20% until combat is over and then it refills faster ala Dragon Age 2?

If one of the bars is depleted it won't be refilled on its own and can only be regained with medi-gel. If it's just damaged but not depleted, it'll regenerate on its own.

So if you're knocked down to the last bar and don't use the medi-gel, it'll stay there until the game refills all the bars for you automatically at one point.

If there are health regenerating armor pieces, they better take it slow unlike in ME1, where you could be up to full health in a few seconds if you had the right upgrade.

Collector armor has faster health regeneration, but than again you regen full HP in ME 2 while in cover and there is no knowing wheter this armor will return in ME 3.
I am just thinking it might work like that since there were two armor pieces which had faster shield regen aswell.

Hmm, like that new system. It's not unique to ME3 'though, I saw it before in at least another game. Don't ask me which one ... I just saw it.

Actually, with all the new stuff in ME3 I wonder if they should do a reboot one day so all parts of ME play similar. Right now ME1 plays entirely different compared to ME2, ME3 will feel a lot like ME2 but comes with some extras.
And if the story of ME3 will be that awesome as promised (including heart wrenching scenes, romances etc), I seriously like to see one.

Uhh yeah, just rambling.

I like the new system, makes you playing more tactically.

Pick just about any mechanic in any game, and you can say the same thing.  It's rare to find truly unique elements.  Most of what distinguishes titles gameplay-wise is their particular permutation of established elements, and how they've been made to interact with one another (and often, the most interesting interactions are ones that the designers didn't anticipate).

I think the last shooter I played with such a system was Far Cry 2.

Anyway, back on topic: I like this very much. Hopefully this means the medigel mechanics have been revised so we have a dispenser back on the Normandy or some other way of getting free refills when not in a mission. It was kind of odd in ME2 how Shepard has to scavenge medigel from random containers lying around everywhere yet can't get any back on the ship.

Of course, if this does mean that overly agreesive playstyles (my favourite) become less viable, hopefully I can just mod it out! :P

I really like it.

It adds to the challenge.

It makes Medi-Gel more useful.

And, it reminds me of Far Cry 2, which had a great health system.

Deus Ex: HR has a similar mechanic with energy cells.

I'm not sure if I like this.  If you go down to one bar of health (not uncommon in Insanity!) then you'll need to use a boatload of medigel, which means that to make the game survivable, there will be medigel dispensers everywhere.  It will be like running around having to pick up ammo, er, thermal clips.  Fun?

i dont care about the health system, just as long as medi-gel is used the way it was used in ME1.

I like the looks of it.

Kind of miss ME1's hud as far as squaddies are concerned though.

Thank you, that's the one where I saw it first. Never played DX:HR.

I liked that system. It wasn't perfect but it comes closer to reality ... kinda. Try catching bullets and survive. It's not that possible.

Also "A terrible risk, but the priiize!" :D

I loled when I heard that in MotA.

This new segmented health seems a great idea. Not to mention the improved AI will most likely make the game much more challenging than before.

Ths gives lasting consequences to being reckless and taking too damage. If you get to the point where you're on the brink of death you won't be able to hide behind a crate for 5 seconds and magically feel all better. Instead you'll only gain a 1/5th of your total Health, essentially remaining "wounded".

So? Your shields recharge and they are all that matter (in ME2) anyway. When you're down to health you either have to use an ability to get shields up (Charge, Tech Armor, Barrier) or hide behind cover for a few seconds. Nothing will change for those who play aggressive except they removed those annoying red veins. When I play Vanguard (or other classes) aggressively I never relied on health regen, only shield regen and when you get those red veins they usually don't go away before the fight is over anyway.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but I do think most people here overestimate the impact it will have on gameplay (which will be very small).

Does anyone know how ME3 medkits work? Do they also recharge your shields (like in ME2) or only restore (some) health (like in ME1) and are powers and/or regen the only ways to get shields back up?

It has been around for years. Far Cry 2 is an example of a game using that system. Another game was Chronicles of Riddisck Assault on Dark Athena.

Well, I think that devs will find a way to balance things out for Vanguard. With ME3 health system but lame shotguns of ME2, vanguards won't stand a chance at insanity if they charge all the time.

It reminded me to FarCry 2's Health system, which I liked, maybe more than the traditional health bar..... and of course better than the autohealing system most shooters nowadays have (I hate it)
