Final Fantasy XIII-2

Personally i enjoyed XIII sure it wasn't the most freeroaming RPG in the world and you spent most of the time moving forward and advancing the plot but i feel the plot was interesting and the characters for the most part likeable though i agree with most that Hope got annoying. His character type is the scourge of JRPG's there is always a miserable whiny character though often he is the main character of the damn thing >.<.
But apart from his "moments" i liked the rest of them and i think a lot of people are too ****y against them especially Snow who i thought was one of the more enjoyable characters. I like the fast paced battle system a lot more than the slow frumpyness of true turn based systems too.

Is XIII really that hated? I started it again earlier this month and have been thoroughly enjoying it.
But then i'm one of those that dislike IX and like VIII, so maybe i'm just odd.
Its like anything, the people who hate it will always be the loudest(Tali and MLP seem to be exempt from that rule).
Personally I liked the combat and gameplay, didn't mind the corridors too much and quite enjoyed it when it opened up later on. Unfortunately I grew to hate the game because I couldn't stand the characters, by the end of it I genuinely didn't care if half of them lived or died or who won the final battle.

And Barthandalus whenever you fought him... My god. I spent over 100 hours in Chapter 11 alone and Barthandalus at the end was still hard as nails to defeat. Though I did beat him about halfway through that to get access to Death with Vanille.
But in Chapter 13... I had everyone's Crystariums maxed out, except for the ones where every node was at least 10000 points, and I still had problems with a lot of the encounters. Oh yeah, I also made Fang's Ultimate Weapon and maxed it out, the variation that gave the most P.Atk.
The only characters I cared about were Fang, Lightning, Vanille, and Snow. My favorite part of the entire game was when Fang transformed into Ragnarok.

But would you want to suffer trough the sin against humantiy that is the story and the aboration that is the characters/writing?
There are games with both good gameplay and a decent story/plot....

I love it, it's one of the better games i've played in the last couple of years.
The whole nostagia/expectations element is probably the biggest problem. When i first played VIII and X i hated them, i could find very few redeeming features.
It was things like, this isn't the Final Fantasy i know, Squall/Tidus is such a muppet, only six party members, ugh, voice acting. A few years later replaying them i found them to be very good and most of the issues i had just stopped being a problem.
The reverse happened with IX, played it loved it, replayed it hated it.
Does liking Hope make me a bad person? 'cause everyone seems to hate him.

Also when was Yuna a "generic emo cool-name main char"?
And to everyone XIII is still a bad game by me(and anyone who knows what they are talking about...) and I was never someone who had hate for it before playing it(all the way to end...) and I am not a nostagia fan and I don't even hate Hope I just really hate the bad story, bad gameplay and bad characters(Snow and Vanille).
It really is not a "the people who hate it are the loudest" thing more like people do hate it more than they like it, just look at how XIII-2 sold.

As for the "FF is going downhill!" convo, people have been saying that since FF7, and frankly I'm sure they would have been saying it earlier if the internet had been mainstream back when FF2 came out on the Famicom. So which is the worst game, again? FF7? 8? 9? 10? 11? 12? 13? The opinion seems to generally be reliant on when someone joined the series. "My first FF was 6! It was the best! 7 was when the series went downhill!" "My first FF was 10! It was the best! 11 was when the series went downhill!" /eyeroll
The whole "Back in my day, everything was better... You kids nowadays suck!" cliche has been overused for centuries, if not millennia. You see it in every game series, and in everything from walking to school and back both ways uphill in the snow to music.

FF has it's ups and downs. It continues to change and thats what make it a great series. some people will love one game while others will hate that game as well. I hope it continues to change and not become stagnant.

An yet there is some truth in that.
Blanket statements don't really help- unless you just wanna use it as an excuse to dismiss all criticism.
There are pletny of cases where older was better. There are also plenty of cases where nostalgia glasses are in full effect.

Same. Don't really fall in the genreal category though. Started the series with VII, yet VIII and IX are my favourites followed XII and XIII. The full order of preference goes something like this. IX=VIII>XIII=XII>VII=IV=VI>>>X>V>X-2>III=I>>>>II
Haven't played XI and XIV and obviously full XIII-2 yet so I can't add them. Like all of them with the exception of say II.

I enjoy when this excuse comes up to write off anyone that has complaints on a sacred cow or his favorite game. For so background, I started with Final Fantasy on the NES and played all of the main series that came to the USA. I choose the PS3 over the 360 for Final Fantasy 13 (this was long before it was announced as a multiplatform title). So, yeah I was a FF fanboy.
While no FF is perfect and has everything (except of 6), 13 had the worst of almost everything. Worst written and spoken dialogue, music, characters, pacing, storytelling, battle system, and so forth. CGI was too much a crotch in the game, and the person that decided that if the main character dies than it is game over hopefully retired and will never work in gaming again.
So how does SE fix this, oh they add QTEs. Fair enough, that ups the player's involvement in battle another 1%. By adding Noel and Serah as the main characters, and leaving the third for a monster. Ok, Nomura is stuck in a rut, creating the same characters over and over again. Hopefully he departs soon.
Oh, and reports form another site from someone that imported the game and finished it, Lightning isn't even playable. Seems like SE was just using her as a marketing tool to get the fans' nether regions all a tingle.
