ok I am going to say this one more time.
Lightning may not be playable for most of the game, however she is still an important part of the story. ok? wait are you saying Villains have no part in the story because you can't play as them.

I enjoy when this excuse comes up to write off anyone that has complaints on a sacred cow or his favorite game. For so background, I started with Final Fantasy on the NES and played all of the main series that came to the USA. I choose the PS3 over the 360 for Final Fantasy 13 (this was long before it was announced as a multiplatform title). So, yeah I was a FF fanboy.
While no FF is perfect and has everything (except of 6), 13 had the worst of almost everything. Worst written and spoken dialogue, music, characters, pacing, storytelling, battle system, and so forth. CGI was too much a crotch in the game, and the person that decided that if the main character dies than it is game over hopefully retired and will never work in gaming again. No one ever said no one has no genuine opinions
So how does SE fix this, oh they add QTEs. Fair enough, that ups the player's involvement in battle another 1%. By adding Noel and Serah as the main characters, and leaving the third for a monster. Ok, Nomura is stuck in a rut, creating the same characters over and over again. Hopefully he departs soon.
Oh, and reports form another site from someone that imported the game and finished it, Lightning isn't even playable. Seems like SE was just using her as a marketing tool to get the fans' nether regions all a tingle.
First things first, he said a lot, not all are bandwagoners. Nothing was said about there was no one who genuinely disliked XIII. Second Nomura had next to nothing to do with XIII and XIII-2, That's Motomu Toriyama.Nomura has currently got his hands full with VsXIII and Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance.
From the Wikia:
FF 13, Character designer: Tetsuya Nomura
FF 13-2, Character Design (Playable Character Faces): Tetsuya Nomura
If you notice, I placed his name next to my bit about character designs.
Oh, I see where you are coming from now.

Something I think is a nice touch with FF13-2 is how the NPCs behave. I noticed when I used Mog's treasure scan, NPCs would start running away, crying "What is that!? Magic!?" I'd love little things like that in Bioware games.
As for the "FF is going downhill!" convo, people have been saying that since FF7, and frankly I'm sure they would have been saying it earlier if the internet had been mainstream back when FF2 came out on the Famicom. So which is the worst game, again? FF7? 8? 9? 10? 11? 12? 13? The opinion seems to generally be reliant on when someone joined the series. "My first FF was 6! It was the best! 7 was when the series went downhill!" "My first FF was 10! It was the best! 11 was when the series went downhill!" /eyeroll
The whole "Back in my day, everything was better... You kids nowadays suck!" cliche has been overused for centuries, if not millennia. You see it in every game series, and in everything from walking to school and back both ways uphill in the snow to music.
I agree with you, Rojahar.
Same. Don't really fall in the genreal category though. Started the series with VII, yet VIII and IX are my favourites followed XII and XIII. The full order of preference goes something like this. IX=VIII>XIII=XII>VII=IV=VI>>>X>V>X-2>III=I>>>>II
Haven't played XI and XIV and obviously full XIII-2 yet so I can't add them. Like all of them with the exception of say II.
I also agree that many fans seem to think in this way. I started with FFIV on the SNES when I was quite young, and have now played most of them. My favorite is actually VI. The order after that is all over the place.
Funnily enough, I loved FFII - yes - it certainly had a weird levelling system, but in the end it just meant more grinding than usual, which doesn't seem like that big a deal. It had a very impressive soundtrack, and a much better plot than its predecessor or successor.
Not sure if this is true or not - but I've heard from a few separate places now, that the famous music piece 'To Zanarkand' from FFX was actually composed as a track for FFII originally, but not used in the game for one reason or another. Instead it was shelved until another game with a depressing enough storyline came along, and appeared 8 fantasies later.

To Zanarkand is easily one of the best soundtracks of the entire series
Agreed. One of my favorites, along with Dancing Mad (FF6), and a few others (I was going to write them out...but realised that there are quite a few...and I could almost start a thread about FF music)

Nomura was the lead designer for 13, and is credited in 13-2 because most of his characters retain the same face with different hair and clothes. To those individuals, I have to credit them for making Snow look like more of a douchebag child molester

Wait, are you honestly comparing a new villain's appearance to Square Enix sticking the the main character of the previous installment on the front of the game box, advertising, a limited edition playstation 3, and the FIRST video of the game? Seriously? Nevermind, just looked at your name.

I don't care if she's part of the story, I wanted to be able to use her and Fang in combat for at least 90% of the game.

Can't believe it, but I sold a bunch of my old games before yesterday and I now have 180$ of credits at my local gaming store. This means one thing: Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning will be free purchases. This also means I'll be able to help my family more this month with the food and emergencies. I hope these games will be worth it for all the trouble I get through to get them.

I bet they've been secretly working on it all this time, only to go SURPRISE! >
Another thing to bring up is VsXIII's battle system. Nomura based it on the Kingdom Hearts series so it could be developed quickly. The sooner that the decoy game had been worked on enough they stopped development on it, and started on the VII remake, filtering bits of info on VsXIII throughot the years to keep people transfixed on it, only to go and shock everyone with a whirlwind of an ad campagn for Re: FFVII releasing it worldwide a week later. Those clever bastards.

But their new stuff seems to be less than stellar.Teddie Sage wrote...
Square Enix said that they will never do the remake because it would take more than a decade to do so and I'm happy about that. "Don't waste your time on stuff while you could be making cash on new things", that's their mentality.

Yeah, they made Mindjack. Quality seems to be a high priority for SE.
I looked at Destructod, because in my opinion, Jim Sterling was one of the few reviewers that was not afraid to call FF 13 out for being the massive pile of excremernt that it was, but he didn't review this one. Instead, we have someone that writes this:
"Shopping in Final Fantasy XIII-2 is really weird; you won't
find the traditional RPG town store here. Instead you'll find a being
that looks to be part human female, part Chocobo, with plenty of exposed
skin, but feathers covering her crotch, breasts and arms. Oh, and her
hat appears to be a dead chocobo head. She calls herself Chobolina and
she travels through time to be right where you need her when you need
her most. She sells typical healing items as well as weapons and
upgrades. Her prices never change and the selection rarely does either,
but what she has to say to you every time you encounter her does, and
it's almost always hilarious. Sometimes she screams "Choco-boco-lina"
when you see her. Other times she becomes philosophical and talks about
how she's not quite human. It's almost as if Square Enix is using
Chobolina to apologize for how terrible shopping was in Final Fantasy XIII. The real gift from Square Enix comes when the inevitable Chobolina cosplay trend begins this year."
From what I have seen, that character is massively annoying a la Vanille, so I am pretty sure I cannot take anything he says at face value. As for the apology, try restoring some dignity to the FF series.
