Just a bit at a loss here.  I'm playing with a mage Hawke with AoE spells.  My party consists of Aveline (meat shield) and Varric (range dps plus lockpicker).  I'm not quite sure who I want as my fourth.  So far, I've been playing with Carver as my fourth, but I've just gotten everyone except Sebastian.

So, do I need a second mage/healer (Anders)?  A dual-weiling all-or-nothing frontline (Isabela)?  A two-handed frontline (Carver)?

I do not know how to use Merril, she seems like a mage no different than my Hawke, and her Dalish Pariah skill tree doesn't look too impressive or useful.  Same goes for Fenris.

I'm playing at Normal difficulty at the moment, but I like to reload tough battles to make sure none of my companions "faint" during combat.

Suggestions with minimal spoilers appreciated greatly.

Anders as a healer surely is useful when you want no "fainting" of your companions. As this seems to be your first playthrough, having a healer is good when you don't know what is coming up.
But i would honestly recommend using them all from time to time. Aveline is an awesome tank, but Fenris can be too at some occasions: Many anti-magic skills in his repertoire. Varric is a DPS monster, but Sebastian has a very useful decoy skill, making him a bit more durable. And Isabela, while fragile, also produces insane damage per second.
Merrill is quite similar to your Hawke if you go on AoE spells, but if you give her blood magic, high constitution, some blood magic improving items, rock armor and the "wrath of the elvhen" skill she becomes pretty unkillable in the late game. Also, you could use her for the "Entropy" spell tree if your Hawke doesn't use it. Many awesome spells, but to few points to explore them all on one character.
Anders, Varric and Aveline are always a safe bet for you. But i think you really should mix it up from time to time. All companions offer interesting gameplay aspects and have something interesting to say.

Yeah, I think I'll go for the healer for now. First play-through so not experimenting too much just yet, and enjoying the storyline. Pity I'm losing Carver, I enjoyed hearing him and Aveline argue. But still, there's Varric, so...

If you don't plan on investing much in the creation tree, Anders can do that and be very useful casting heal, haste, heroic aura and the glyphs.
