This issue related to the retail (disc based) edition of Dragon Age II - it's activation process - missing code redemption box in Origin - failure to activate titles downloaded through Origin (again DAII).
Removed firewall/anti-virus, not helpful but worth a try.
Played with every windows 7 service - not helpful but worth a try.
Removed both Dragon Age II and Origin - deleted origin download folder.
Tried to login with another pre-origin EA game - worked fine.
Downloaded an older version of Origin - Right clicked OriginSetup.exe - Selected compatibility tab.
Selected compatibility with Windows XP SP3. - Apply, OK - Right clicked and selected to run as administrator.
Started Origin and allowed it to update - Attempted to use the code redemption box as an indicator for either issue. - The code redemption box was visible - Was then able to close Origin, Install DAII from disc and activate.
I had been trying to find a solution for a few days, I'm not saying it's pure science but with the issues vanishing straight after I tried this.. I think I'm convinced
Contrary to my poor support experience with someone on live chat, I was helped by both a community manager and a very decent person at EA. Thanks to both for the most excellent help.
