Merrill or Isabela?

If Hawke is the protagonist in the next game then I guess I'll wait for a more interesting character to romance. No one tops Leliana for me so far!

And I think Merrill knows people think she's a tad too naive -- at least after Act 1 -- and she just sort of uses that to her advantage by continuing along with it. She's maintaining a facade of her being like that.
That's what I think anyway, because she is a very intelligent character.

In my gay male Hawke playthrough, I went for Anders just to add some drama to the ending and because in my twisted male heterosexual narrow mindset I think is the one a gay guy would more probably go to, even though I found him tremendously whiny and probably most gay guys did as well, but hey my DA:O first romance was Alistair so I can put up with that ****...I personally felt myself more attracted to Varric anyway, but read what I said about zoophilia.
I can see a gay Lady Hawke go for Merril though, but I am still to crossplay in this game so...

I've romanced both as male Hawkes and as female since i won't romance Anders (I don't do angst) and Fenris tends to annoy me unless I am playing a mage (then I can romance him on my mage girls). If Anders or Merrill are in my group they usually have antagonistic and disruptive banters with Fenris, which detracts from the fun of my game.
I got two kids in RL I don't want to listen to that **** in a game.

I ended up in my male het Hawke playthrough to Isabella not just because Merril was childish, but because she was an elf mainly...I don't do that zoophilia thing everybody seems comfortable with (if you could choose race though...I might be gay and go for Fenris still XD)

She does that if you romance Merrill at all. However, on my "William Hawke" playthrough i started with Isabella and ended up flirting with Merrill and it broke the Issy romance. She still promised to take his manhood if he hurts Merrill (and when you give her the ship in Act 3, if you give it to her, she invites you to come and bring Merrill along with you when she plans on leaving Kirkwall). I imagined that very ending for them in my fic.
There is also a bittersweet banter between Merrill and Isabella with Merrill cooing over her romance with Hawke and Issy sounds so sad but is still very sweet to Merrill, who I guess is oblivious to the fact that Issy loved him first...Very tragic...

Especially when you bring her along to save Leandra from Quentin. That's late Act 2, post romance. She sees Quentin's shrine for his late wife. "Oh! That's a pretty little shrine."
Or if you bring her along to investigate Gascard DuPuis's mansion. "Gascard is like me. We both like ancient artifacts."
It's like the girl has zero empathy/social skills. Call that "using her naivety to her advantage" if you will, but I fail to see the advantage in that.

yea thats the only time I've ever heard it. It's a party banter. You have to romance Isabella first, and don't kill the romance by telling her 'its just sex'. Then flirt with Merrill and sleep with her when she comes to your home. It kills the Isabella romance, without you actually breaking up with Issy. Since I use mods it was hard for me to tell if she was still in her 'romanced costume', but her dialogues with Hawke afterward were all "Friend" ones. And the game ending with the convos was as if I had romanced only Merrill, and that's who William ended up with.
Damn ninjamancing Dalish elf...she's so damn cute.
William was such an ass....damn good fun though!

Thanks I should try doing that!! On another note, I also contemplated giving Isabela up to the Arishok cause I got pissed that she deserted me.

I can't kill the sibling in the Deep Roads, I can't turn Fenris over to Denarius either, though I have seen the former on Utube and done the latter just to see before reloading and wasting the Magister.
I don't do angst. Reality has enough pain I don't want to do it in a game.

Less than zero. Zero means nobody will remember you, she tends to provoke hostility most of the time (look at her clan). In fact thinking about it deeper empathy seems to be something the elves just don't do...as a whole in two games...
Problem I have handling Fenris to Denarius is that Tevinters are ****s...I mean I am yet to find anyone sympathetic, I know Fenris is somewhat but I don't think he is enough sympathetic to consider the nation other thing that...Mordor.

I can't hold Merrill accountable for the bad writing of that quest.
Anders says "Maybe this time we'll find more than bones" and Isabela says "If I ever make a shrine like this, stab me in the eye please".
How are those any better? I find Anders' to be worse.
And in Merrill's defense, it is a kinda pretty shrine. It just seemed like a casual observation to me. Extremely creepy given what we know of Quentin, but kinda pretty. People who have lost their spouse tend to make shrines -- varying in size -- to them in some form or another. Also, she made that comment before the connection to looking like Leandra was even made.
And personally, that portrait didn't really look like Leandra to me.
Or if you bring her along to investigate Gascard DuPuis's mansion. "Gascard is like me. We both like ancient artifacts."
I always bring her and I've never gotten that. How'd you get it?

you do realize that she goes to see Hawke, knows he's upset, consoles him, and also says that she too is filled with great sorrow?
Ir abelas, ma vhenan.
Translated, that means "I am filled with great sorrow for your loss, my love."
Merrill quite clearly fits the bill of an empath, as empathy is defined as being able to recognize and share feelings. She's actually a sympathetic person as that involves being an empath but also having a positive regard for the other person.
EDIT: Not to mention that she says "I'm sorry. his blood magic was the only thing keeping her alive. There's nothing I can do" when Leandra starts dying.

Yea, we will find more than bones, we'll find my mom's blood magic'ed corpse walking around, you jackass!
I think it's human nature to try to find comfort in humor when you're scared, but damn, the companion comments during that quest show a level of insensitivity that made me want to murderlize all of them and have Hawke walk out of there alone.

Indeed. I've often used humor as a defense mechanism for my more horrendous days.
But the companion comments -- aside from Varric's killing of Gascard and Merrill's observation -- did make me just say "Seriously.... that's not funny. That's just being a jackass"

Glad to see I am not the only one. Funny bit is that when they come with their bullcrap we are supposed to lend a sympathetic ear to them.

My Hawkes usually go with Isabela because I like the adventure-seeker types. She reminds me of Leliana, minus the whole religious side.
For the jackass thing, I nominate sarcastic Hawke, when they bring Ninette's ring to her husband. "I couldn't find your wife. Here's a ring, it looks pricey!"

Sarcastic Hawke makes me laugh. My favorite line is the insensitive comment sarcastic Hawke says to Emeric when he/she brings back the bag of bones.
Hawke:"Recognize your mage?"
Bethany:"You're horrible!"
Emeric:"Show some respect!"
Indeed, I wanted to shove my steelplated boot up Kit's ass when she said that, but it was pretty damn funny at the time.

If anything, I like how the npcs respond appropriately, "Show some respect.". I'd hate to get the same response with all of the dialogue tones.
