So this was what was suggested in the other thread...

Idea is to use Reave as bonus power on a Soldier.  Will probably end up with Claymore as bonus weapon as this will be a CQC style build.  Reave will be used to refill health as opposed to Adrenaline Rush.

I Imported a Level 60 ME1 character, so if you do a vanilla new game you won't have the same point totals as this.  I am skipping Lazarus Station and Freedom's Progress.  Reave worked ok on both, but it isn't exactly optimized for anti-Mech or anti-Geth.  Will be investing more in Disruptor Ammo when possible.

The original run was completed taking the Claymore on the DCC.  I am also doing the last half with the Revenant.  The initial set is right below, and the Revenant list is at the bottom.  Some random extras are in the middle.

As I posted on Youtube, you used the Sniper Rifle when you were at the ground level and subsequently closer to the enemy while you used the Assault Rifle on the Platform. I don't get the reasoning here...:P

The build seems interesting, but I hope Reave improves significantly with the damage and duration upgrades - it seems really REALLY weak.

Sometimes you just do things and there aren't reasons.

I wanted to use the shotgun more down there, but I was also tired of how many guys there were so I wanted to use something with punch.

Yes, Area Reave isn't the most powerful. Without any bonuses, level 1 incinerate does nearly as much damage to armor (312 v 320).

Probably better to comment on Reave here than on the video, since other people might have a better understanding of Reave. Good job, by the way.

Anyway, I wonder if Heavy Reave might have been better early game instead of Area Reave, since you lack the damage protection upgrades. Also, Reave suffers from the duration penalty on Insanity (20% I think?), so it actually does less damage on Insanity. I used it on an Engineer once, but the Engineer passive has both power damage and power duration bonuses which help.

Perhaps so. I figured on Mordin's mission I would have had the opportunity to hit clumped Vorcha a lot. Sort of happened, but not really. It might have been easier if I had just maxed passive first, but I wanted to make sure I would use Reave.

I am going to do Firewalker (for biotic damage) and then Archangel. I am sort of dreading Archangel bc it can be tough.

Not trying to spam, but finished Archangel.  Will post it after edited and uploaded.  This build kicked ass on that mission, IMO.

In the mean time, I also think I may have figured out how to make videos decently.  Part of my problem was recording my 16:10 output.  Switched in game to 1280x720 and will record fullscreen.  It is slightly distorted when I play, but the vids come out correct at 16:9.  Still playing with compression.

Here is a random test video...
Firewalker Test

Next major mission will likely be Kasumi's.  Will probably have raided the Citadel for upgrades.

Yeah, I don't have a 1980x1080 screen either, so I play windowed at 1280x720. It's awkward at first, but I got used to it.

Will watch the videos soon.

Archangel is public now.  Improved video quality.  Framerate stutters every once and a while, has to do with compression I think.

Firewalker was completed in between The Professor and this mission resulting in a Biotic Upgrade being obtained  and increasing one level to 9.  Garrus provides some feedback along the way.

After Archangel, did Normandy Crash Site, N7 Lost Operative, and headed to the Citadel to pick up Kasumi and get some upgrades:

Research unlocked upgrades...

Adrenaline Rush 1
Disruptor Ammo 3
Combat Mastery 3
Area Reave 4

Recorded last night, was getting late and the last battle was a comedy of errors...

Mission 4: Subject Zero

This one I uploaded as a single video.  I will try not to break them up in the future if that is what most prefer.

I'm still not the master of CQC, but I did like holding 3 turians with shotguns in the hallway near the beginning.  It seems like in the middle of the mission in the large rooms you take a lot of heat moving towards the enemy positions since the areas are so big, which limited my ability to just get in close.

I recorded half of Korlus: Warlord last night before I went out.  I might be able to finish it tomorrow.  After that will of course be Horizon.

edit: noticed I mentioned evolving to Shock Trooper, but that didn't happen until Korlus.  Had it right on the video though.

Had a good question from Mi-Chan about leveling disruptor instead of incendiary. Thought it might be worth talking about here too.

The short of it was that I had reave for armor/health and to stun organics so I wanted something that would work on shields and mechs. I went up to level 3 for Kasumi's mission because the shields are a big part there, as well as in Purgatory and Korlus, so I figured it would still work out for me. It might bite me on Horizon where there are 0 shields, but we will cross that bridge when we get there.

Now as to how well reave actually works on armor, it isn't the most powerful unfortunately. The good news is at least it can lock down organics... holding the 3 turians in the hall near the beginning of Purgatory was a decent example of this IMO.

The other reason I wanted to get to level 3 disruptor was because that is when the weapon overheat ability is unlocked. I think I have read from people that it "doesn't do anything" but I don't think that is accurate. It isn't a guaranteed effect, just like cryo doesn't always freeze, but it does work and there are examples in Kasumi's mission and Subject Zero. Granted, all the have to do is reload to clear it, but it does help a little bit. Just look for the smoke rolling off their guns after I shoot them. The power overload does this as well.

Now as for where I am at now, before Korlus I deceded to put the 4 points I had into Combat Mastery to give me a little more health and punch. I took Shock Trooper for the extra health and to try and get a little more duration out of reave. I was very close to choosing Commando for the extra weapon damage, storm speed, and reave damage. Mistake, I dunno.  I took Commando.

So far Korlus has gone really well even without incendiary. All Blue Suns... the Krogan bridge part was actually pretty clean as well, IMO. Also have a funny out-take from the very beginning that will get uploaded. Something that never happened to me before on that mission.

So as of Korlus the character should be:

Adrenaline Rush 1
Disruptor Ammo 3
Commando 4
Area Reave 4

The biggest issue with the overheat you will find is on Shotgun users. For whatever reason, they all use Claymore action, ie reload after every shot anyway, so overheat does zip to them.

The biggest issue on disruptor for synthetics is they explode and if you are playing up close it can kill you.

It isn't a bad power or even a bad choice, but usually the inferno fire dance takes longer to get over than they overheat.

Alright Korlus uploading, Horizon queued... probably will be live some time tomorrow (I have slow upload speeds, relatively speaking).

Korlus gave me 4 points, so that let me go to:

Adrenaline Rush 1
Disruptor Ammo 3
Incendiary Ammo 2
Cryo Ammo 1
Commando 4
Area Reave 4

So 1 pt wonder ammo...

Also the second half of Korlus and Horizon were filmed with:
Heavy Shiner Bock
-Shepard gains 25% Bravado
-Female squad members gain 50% attractiveness

edit:  Decided to do 4 N7 Missions after Horizon...

N7: Archeological Dig Site
N7: MSV Strontium Mule
N7: Anomalous Weather Detected
N7: Blood Pack Comm Relay

Made a little video for them that will get uploaded too.

So I take it that you've effectively replaced Adrenaline Rush with Reave? I haven't really seen it used if I remember correctly (though I watch RC's, Ryo's and Xassan's videos aswell, so I could be wrong in this assessment. :?)

It seems like an unorthodox choice, yet highly effective. Then again, I've seen everyone and their mom praise Reave here on the boards - so maybe I've just been too judging. We'll see, I guess.

Yeah more or less.  I have hit Adrenaline Rush a few times by accident.

If this wasn't what people wanted to see I suppose I could try to transition to something that uses Adrenaline Rush and Reave together, but Reave use will drop off.

Here the next mission:

Horizon pt1
Horizon pt2

I have been wasting some time messing around with an N7 Montage video for 4 missions after Horizon.

I'll probably do Jacob's loyalty mission left, and after that DCS should be triggered.

edit:

N7: Montage (Battle Music)

The second one was a backup plan, it has free license music I found.  Sort of reminds me of Halo.

I had a question about squad selection, and I figured it might be worth talking about on here too.

This was in regards to Horizon, where I brought along Garrus and Grunt.

This has actually been my go to team for that mission the majority of times I've played through. I suppose it isn't what most would consider the ideal anti-Collector squad, although I think they actually work out decently in that role. In fact I use them a lot on Reaper IFF too.

Grunt is a tank and can roll over husks. In the courtyard fight if you position him correctly the husks will stack near him and he can take them all out more or less by himself. Inferno ammo also works decently on Collectors, and Grunt is one of the few squad members that I usually spend points on their ammo skill. Concussive Shot is what it is... it isn't hugely effective damage wise, but I like having the knock down ability. Unfortunately the cooldown isn't great.

Garrus is probably thought of more as anti Synthetic or Blue Suns, but he has a decent amount of health and good weapons. CS, as above. I don't have the Incisor, or the Mattock, either of which would probably increase his damage output, but with the Mantis he is decent anyway.

Miranda is of course basically good (perhaps not ideal) for any mission with her powers vs every defense and buffs in her passive. She works fine on this mission, although she has no CC power at this stage of the game. You could use Overload 3 for weapon overheat, that's about it.

Mordin works out well enough. Incinerate and Cryo Blast are useful in the Collector missions.

Kasumi is another decent one because her Improved Flashbang is very good.

I think the only two (that you can take without modding) that I haven't ever used are Zaeed and Jack. Zaeed is more or less like Garrus, except I don't like him as much. Jack I might or might not have taken once, I don't really remember. She would do alright for crowd control obviously, but fortunately on this mission husk swarms are in places that offer you a pretty favorable engagement anyway.

At any rate you can make just about any of them work on any mission if you adjust tactics a little bit. Gift of Greatness is uploading, and Disabled Collector Cruiser is queued.

I took Garrus on Jacob's mission, and I took Garrus and Kasumi on the Cruiser, fwiw.

I don't know why the framerate wasn't very good in Jacob's mission.  I restarted but that didn't seem to improve it.

For DCC, you don't get to see the first run because I apparently had closed FRAPS and didn't restart before I opened ME2 again.  Yeah, pretty dumb.  The platform battle was more "interesting" the first time but faster the second time.  There probably wasn't much difference, except that I handled the husks a little faster the first time, and my Claymore skills were even worse than in the video the first time.

The Prodigal will probably be next.

I am getting slightly better with the Claymore, not the greatest ever yet.  Can't reliably do the reload trick.

The Prodigal
Illium: The Justicar

I use the Claymore a little more by the end of Prodigal, and I try to use it most of the time for The Justicar.  After that I did a few N7 missions to practice some more.  Will have a little video of that too.

edit:

N7: Part Deux

This is just some clips of me trying to get better with the Claymore.

Illium: The Assassin is up now.

Illium: The Assassin pt1
Illium: The Assassin pt2

One of the most fun ones so far.  Took Garrus and Samara.

I did Samara's LM after that.  Didn't film it.

Haestrom is uploading.

No I didn't get the 3rd shotgun upgrade before that.  I really should have probably done Grunt's loyalty mission earlier, but I did do it after Haestrom... probably the extra 2 shotgun upgrades would have come in handy.  At any rate, got into a decent rhythm on Grunt's mission, which is also one that is usually fun.

The plan is to probably do Mordin's mission, then go to the Citadel and take care of Garrus and Thane's.  Then probably Zaeed's mission.  I will then probably do Reaper IFF, Tali's LM, Legion's LM, Suicide Mission, and then the DLC's.  That's the current roadmap anyway.  There are some more N7 missions that could be done, but then again they don't have any upgrades.

I could always have done Arrival or LOTSB earlier to get more upgrades.  I still could.

On horizon , on infiltrator I took mordin and grunt ,both on cryo ammo.
But on vanguard I took kasumi forher Harbie stun and also brought grunt .
On adept if I recall , it was also mordin and grunt for his ammo.
So grunt seems a common denominator for the reasons you mentioned
.

Did you notice a big differenece for not having the 3rd SG upgrade ?

The most noticable thing is that the 3rd one unlocks "Shotgun Extra Rounds."   I would have had a lot less ammo problems (not that it was a huge deal).  And probabaly a few Geth that didn't go down would have.

Haestrom: Tali

Already covered the shotgun damage bit... what you don't see is the first run I did.  I was unhappy with it because I thought I had used the Viper too much, so I tried to make something better.

It came out ok; I'm sure the CQC experts have got some tips... I have always played Haestrom as sort of a stand off map anyway because of the open spaces and the shield mechanic.

Rite of Passage actually will be finished uploading soon.  Queued after that is Old Blood and Eye for an Eye.

I think I am getting a little better, but the reload trick still isn't automatic for me.
