Gives me a healer, a archer, a melee and whatever I want.

I second this post its hard for me to want to use anyone else because this party comp works so well!

Alistair sucks until very late in the game because of his ****** poor starting stats.  Shale is a much better tank/melee dps/whatever than him.  Other than that, I am running the same setup.  Don't much care for Wynne's character but meh, she serves a purpose.

I admit that I am a big fan of melee, so I don't really care for magic beyond healing and haven't really used mages much. My first time through I was a dual wielding human noble warrior and it was a lot fun. I don't really know why riposte didn't work for you, I used it a lot. I never liked dual striking, so I only used momentum. The mages were rarely useful to me, I needed Wynne to heal in some fights but Morrigan sat at camp for the rest of the game...I assume it was her that made food for the rest of us.

My play through did not make me say "Mages are useless." I think it is simply sword envy on your part, lol. I am kidding...but I think all it is, is that you like using mages more. Those are different things, so I think you owe an apology to all the warriors in dragon plate and juggernaut armor that can absorb your damage, the shield-speced warriors who will bash you, the dual wielders that will riposte you, and all the rogues who will either poison your food or stab you in camp.

Let us not forget for those dex-fighters and dual-wielders that the Dexterity fighting is somewhat broken. There's a hotfix for it until there's an official release ready. If you think your dex fighters/dual-wielders/bowmen are doing low damage... it is because they are. ;)

I don't think melee characters are useless at all. The difference is that mages are really easy to play, while melee characters require a lot of planning and micromanagement. Really, it's just like a lot of classic games but in reverse. It used to be the mages who needed constant attention and detailed knowledge of the ruleset.

Playing on console or/and at easy mode doesn't count...

If melee is on par with magic why did I have to set the game on nightmare during my first play through to have a little challenge?

Nobody ever dies and I only take a handful of mana pots on bosses. I was expecting to have a lot more chugging to do tbh.

In any case - the fact that it's easier to play with a 3 mage team doesn't make melee characters useless. If you want to play 'easy', then go right ahead. One of the things I like most about solo games is the ability to play them how I want to, at any given moment.

But I play all three classes myself - not because they are or are not uber, but because it's more FUN. This is a role-playing game after all. I like to play different roles (not make all of them cookie cutter copies of something).

I have played on PC hard mode in both my playthroughs.  I'll grant you that mages can cheese it up enough that they make the game too easy but in reality, it's the unlimited amounts of lyrium dust that make mages easy mode.  Try playing without buying any lyrium dust at the Circle Tower and then come tell me how easy you think it is as a mage.  I did not realize that you could get unlimited amounts of dust there when I played through on my mage and it was tough because I had to really manage my mana.

Mages are pretty powerful, granted. But a DW rogue with runed weapons and the proper talents is scary. Like, "look over your back right now to make sure there's no one else in the house, OMG he's backstabbing my eyes!" scary.

im playing this game with a rogue the 2nd time around .. and i like a duelist rogue way betetr than a tanking warrior
so far in the fade and urn of ashes and under the dwarv country i havent died yet with my rogue while the first time around with my warrior i died numerous times

I haven't ever bought lyrium dust, or so much as used the crafting skills with any character-PC or party member...and I'm working on soloing nightmare with a pure caster mage.
You're doing something very wrong to need that many lyrium potions, especially with a party. No fight except a couple boss encounters should take remotley enough time for you to run out of mana.

I'm going to make my mage a Arcane Warrior Morrigan as my mage AoE and whats-her-face as my team healer. We're only level 10s so I'll see how that goes. Last slot is for comic relief so I'll slap in anybody that's willing to stir the pot and make me laugh during the runs.

My dagger/dagger dual wielding rogue assassin/duelist does insane single and multiple target DPS. Not as much as as my Arcane Warrior/Blood Melee Mage but that was a lot like super-easy difficulty.

For the person who so aptly mentioned the availability of mana potions for mages, but lack of stamina ones for other toons, there is a mod out there that provides that very thing. :-)

I'm using my DW Warrior along with Sten as damage, Alistair as a tank and Morrigan as artillery fire.

So far I'm managing just fine so I think warriors work just fine. In fact when I went tank heavy things started looking up for me. I will say I think the DW is the best of the melee forms and the Two Handed Weapon skills seem weaker but that just might be that I control my character and really get the most out of his skills.

They should have the AI cast Crushing Prison on Forcefields, hehe.

QFT.
Fixes the issue without otherwise monkeying with the spells.

Force field should be removed from the game tbh it's way too efficient.

Absolutely. Well, the solution of making Ai ignore ff is better.

I have around 100hs of gameplay on 2 different groups, both on hard mode. My 1º one is Thedan (DH Warrior/Berserker, Morrigan/Spirit Healer, Alistair/Champ and Leliana/ranger. 2º group is Aedan (Bstabing Assassin), Wynne, Morrigan and Sten.

Ok, back to the topic, i find my 1 group much more powerfull , and more importantly, much more fun to play. My main can kill a whit creep with 2 strikes, alistar can tank anything, morrigan is sleeping and healing when needed, and leliana tank with pet while dissing out loads of dmg and debuffs and buffing 3 of my chars considerably. I really cant understand what the topic creator is saying, i find melee characters MUCH more powerfull dmg wise when your group is well balanced. I cant agree with that mage class is OP stuff... it isnt... melee/physical based groups simply needs more planing... U need tactics since u will be overwhelmed by the giant number of talents u can use...

Im really bored playing the other 2 mage based group. While I spend most of the time doing area dmg and freezing people, its simply not that efficient.. u end up wasting money making pots.

I think that OP talk came up cos people cant plan fatigue/talents combos/character picks that sinergise. People playing 3 mages just dont understand the physical part of the game nor the great strategies and fun u can have with it.

Well written post. I agree totaly with you but also think that the problem is that some people don´t realize that class balance only matters in competitive multiplayer games. As long as the game is playable with a melee class without problems i don´t see what this is all about. If you couldn´t play thru it with a melee ok, however then it would be a problem of a "broken" class and again not about balance. I also think that these people haven´t played this kind of RPG´s in the past.

I´m on my third party, first was a 2H warrior,  2nd a Heal/bm mage and 3th is a s&b warrior. No problem on hard.

Guess when i´m done with all possible endings/romances etc. I will try a rogue class solo nightmare..should be fun

my backstabber rogue can wipe out a group of enemies faster than morrigan unleashing her best spells.

A dw warrior can do the same damage as your rogue. A good mage can kill mutliple targets before you get into melee range. Rogues and warriors can be fun, but they really can't compare either.

Any class is fun to play, outside of 2hand warrior as it sucks completely. Group synergy for melee, with haste/teleknetic weapons ect is essential to make it shine. Playing with mages just bores the hell out of me. CC and aoe, same fight with 20 mobs or 5

wtf powergaming ftw.

I've gotten past to the landsmeet with 2 solo nightmare rogues, one pure archer and one str based heavy armor backstabber, both abusing combat stealth. Outside of getting decent gear soloing is stupidly easy. I want to keep going with them by there's no motivation really, just one easy encounter after another.

I was going to try a solo with a mage in nightmare but there's zero challenge in it as you could do it naked...

glyph paralyze combo, AoE, force field myself, virulent walking bomb, win. You can even solo the fight you're supposed to lose with that +5 enchanted combo of pwning. (the one after rescuing Loghain's daughter).

Shale is pretty awesome if you use her right. She can adapt to pretty much any situation. Magic users? Equip Spirit Crystals. Need a quick ranged attack that will hit and knock down all those pesky archers? Turn on Rock Throwing mode and chuck a Boulder. Need a Tank? Stoneheart. Out of Potions and Stamina and need to use those spells and talents? Put her into Support Mode which also debuffs all enemies in it's huge radius.
