Well I guess by now all the big hitters for this year have been released so now it is time for GOTY nominations, what is your personal pick for GOTY and why?

Playing only on XBox 360 console.

Gears of War 3 (im addicted)
Skyrim (unbelievable mass of quest, story, and so on)

Taken from my thread a few weeks back:

Skyrim

Pros:
+An Incredibly gorgeous, jaw-dropping world - especially for PC users.
+Immersive world that's even easier to get lost/sucked into.
+Tree System for each skill greatly enhances customization.
+Dragons.
+Wider range of voice actors, not as repetitive.
+Less obtrusive HUD.
+About 50 other things.

Cons:
-Writing doesn't quite have the emotional potency you'll find with BioWare, Obsidian, Quantic Dream, etc.
-Rogues need more than arrows and slashing. Maybe add some traps. Mages need more unique abilities than fire, ice, and lightning for destruction spells. I need some shadow bolts or something.
-It Ends...eventually.

Yep. No competition in any category for me. I have not yet played TW2 however, surely in 2012.

Witcher 2. Fantastic RPG that shows having amazing graphics doesn't mean the story has to suffer. Which is always the excuse people say.
Pros:
  • Amazing graphics and stable engine
  • Branching story paths
  • Dark fantasy story not about saving the world
  • World feels so alive and authentic
  • Music and sound effects really sound quite amazing
  • Environments are incredible and have  alot going on at once with a lot of npcs
  • Some truly great characters that are have a lot of depth like Letho
  • Talent system is great and mutagens add more customization
  • Traps have been added and thrown weapons
  • Challenging plus a perma-death mode
  • Arena mode, which is what Mass Effect's pinnacle station should have been
  • Writing has been improved and tons of dialogue
  • Free dlc
  • No DRM
Cons
  • Shorter than the original game
  • Alchemy has been streamlined so no mix and matching
  • UI isn't great but not as bad as Skyrim's
  • Combat system could use some tweaking
  • Third Act feels shorter compared to the previous two
  • Less variety of monsters compared to Witcher 1
One of my favorite games of this year and it's on sale at  Gog.com for $23.99. www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_witcher_2

My personal GOTY was going to be Gears of War 3 but the last battle is so freaking annoying that I've decided to give it to Batman: Arkham City.

Either TW2 or Skyrim I guess. Skyrim kinda is Oblivion 2.0. On the other hand CDPR took huge risks with TW2 and basically hit it out of the park. It's so much better than TW1 in so many ways. A drastically different game. I love both games though.

Batman: Arkham City wins it for me. This is the pinnacle of gaming for me. The fun factor is there in spades. Doesn't matter how many times I do it clearing a room of baddies be it stealth or fisticuffs. And I thought Asylum wasn't ever going to be topped. I love being wrong sometimes. Cannot wait to see what Rocksteady does next.
Skyrim is somewhere in second.

Dark Souls.

Why?
  • Challenging gameplay.
  • Fantastic and varied enviroments to explore.
  • Each class feels different to play.
  • Doesn't hold you by the hand.
  • Sense of discovery is huge.
  • Epic bosses.
  • Story - it's good because it just feels so dark. You're thrown into a world where everything is out to kill you and for most of the adventure, you're alone and it feels like lonely trip through the dark. This only adds to the atmosphere when you turn around the wrong corner and have to deal with a Dark Knight.
  • Characters in the game have their own story and endings.
  • Combat is great for an RPG.
  • Leveling up your character is fun as there's just so much to make your character into.
  • Consequences actually last till the end of the game which means you have to be careful when making choices.
  • Enemy AI - in some cases - is exceptional.
  • Solaire of Astora. Nuff said.
The graphics are pretty good too.

This year had alot of games but most of them were "meh" or good but lacked something, runner ups for me and why I don't list them as GoTY

HALO CE AE, its Halo, I've played it, a skin job isn't enough to turn a 10 year old title no matter how great into GoTY.

Next you have Rage and SRTT, both were good but carried signs of being new IP's or directions. Rage was too short at 18 hours, SRTT lacked proper struture imo. Both are great games however.

So y GoTY goes to Skyrim, though I don't feel it worthy of a 10 and it lacks in area's other games are far ahead of it is such a massive jump in quality and quanity from previous ES titles and the amount of gameplay it offers is huge. Maybe if this was a better year for games I'ld have another top pic, but now? Not so much.

Fallout New Vegas. Eh, it was 2010

2011 and problem of skyrim... I vote for L.A. Noire, because of being unique and interesting. I like to investigate the crimes as a inspector in 40s L.A. ;)

Skyrim wins for me with The Witcher 2 and Deus Ex:HR as the runners up.

All three are awesome games but I'm a sucker for sandbox RPGs. My youth was spent playing Pirates, Darklands, the Ultimas, etc.

1) Skyrim
2) Witcher 2
3) Portal 2
4) Dead Space 2
5) Deus Ex HR

I don't really have any huge complaints about Witcher 2, indeed there are certain things that it did better than Skyrim. But I just felt that the overall package of Skyrim was superior.

After the past four days of The Old Republic, despite dumping hundreds of hours into Skyrim, TOR gets my vote. The way BioWare has integrated dialogue and cinematics into the MMO space with their traditional companion and story strengths feels incredible to me thus far. Add to that the multiplayer dialogue options they've got and I really, truly enjoy it.

My favorite has been Skyrim. I don't typically dump 300+ hours into one playthrough. Image IPB

I also loved RAGE, Gears of War 3, Uncharted 3, and Dead Island (before the game-breaking "improvements"). Oh! And Portal 2.

I had high hopes for Infamous 2 and White Knight Chronicles 2, but neither stayed in my console for long.

Skyrim/SWTOR.

The Witcher 2 deserves a strong nomination. Still have to play Deus Ex 3 though.
