Would Hans Zimmer been better for the soundtrack?

TBH, nobody but Jack Wall and Sam Hulick could possibly give Mass Effect the proper "feeling" it needs.

Clint Mansell style didn't fit ME3 in the slightest. Han Zimmer certainly wouldn't. John WIlliams wouldn't. I mean, if you get these guys, you might as well hire Alan Menkin (Beauty and the Beast) to compose some music too since it's already a mess. By the third game, the series already has an established "character" in their music. Mass Effect didn't need to sound like the movies or anything else; it had it's own. Can you imagine if Return of the Jedi had Clint Mansell composing it instead of John Williams? YUCK.

Clint Mansell, while a great composer, was terribly overrated in this game. TERRIBLY. Terribly unsuited for it. Should have just given the money to Sam and Jack....

A Two Steps From Hell and a Hans Zimmer combo would have been divine.

I actually tried to plug the Inception and Dark Knight soundtracks into a few missions during one of my Mass Effect 2 playthroughs, just for kicks-'n-giggles---pertinent tracks that seemed like they might match well. His tone, while somewhat similar in meter and grandness to some of Jack Wall's work, really doesn't quite fit.

A dedicated soundtrack from Zimmer might work, but a COMPLETE Clint Mansell arrangement---not just the open and close with a little input in between---would've been sublime.

Nah, not me.  I thought it was pretty terrific; I'm just looking at it from the perspective of someone who hasn't played the game, and who is comparing the two options.

A thread that's been dead for almost half a year has been resurrected why?

Anyways, no.

Not for this one. The route the took for the mass effect 3 ost was something more mellow and less epic. Soft pianos and soft strings as opposed to strong and attacking ensembles. It was different i like it

Time from the Inception soundtrack is one of the most amazing pieces of music I've ever heard in my life. The "I'm Proud of You" track sounds similar to something he would do.

My first reaction would be "Not his style" then again, he can actually pull of anything he if he wants.

But the Mass Effect music team does a good job. Clint Mansell has only done a small portion of the ME3 soundtrack, people should stop giving him all the credit.

Agreed. Two tracks out of twenty two. And both of them use parts of the same melody so I'll cut down his contribution to a track and a half.

The entire soundtrack was not all that great. Too many composers, and one big-name composer who I felt like he just copied "Moon" onto here. Should have just went with Jack Wall and Sam.

Hans Zimmer would have been a bit too expensive, don't you think?

If you're looking for an overblown horn and strings section, then yes.

(Disclaimer: Williams produces wonderful stuff.  Owner of all 6 Star Wars soundtracks, so clearly I've drunk the Kool-Aid there.  It's to our great fortune as a species that he has always been picked about right for the films he's worked on.  And he's well aware of his limitations.  The old story goes that when Williams was approached by Spielberg for Schindler's List, Williams tried to beg off, saying he wasn't good enough for it.  Spielberg's reply is supposed to have been "Anyone else better is dead.")

Alan Silvestri's current work (which is very different from his 80s output like Predator and Back to the Future, but still rocks) would be a pretty great fit for Mass Effect.

Like Jack Wall/Sam Hulick (and the likes of Basil Poledouris), it's got a great way of taking a short harmonic sequence with a motif, and building it up in layers, to suitably anthemic effect.

Compare this:

Theme from 'The Avengers'

...with this:

Mass Effect 2 - 'Suicide Mission'

Stylistically, it's not exactly the same, but the way it functions, and serves a purpose in underpinning the action on-screen, is ultimately the same, and extremely well done, IMO.

Plus, it's suitably 'heroic'-sounding, which is kind of what Mass Effect 3 could have done with more of, instead of mawkish piano music that sounds like a high school student trying to pastiche Radiohead...

Does it really matter? It should have been Sam Hulick and Jack Wall. Clint Mansell contributed to 2 songs on the entire soundtrack, he did barely anything, the rest was all Sam Hulick and all the other ME2 dlc composers.

I'd give Billy Corgan a go. Not compaining about the music in the game btw. The entire series was masterful.

No, I think the issue for me is the ME3 music is a fantastic listening experience. Putting it on and playing it from start to finish while doing other stuff around the house is great - but at many points in the game I felt that it didn't fit or flow very well.

ME1 soundtrack on the other hand doesn't really work well as a listening by itself piece but in the game works fantastically.

I believe the music writers for games need to be a little different to the music writers for music itself or movies. Kind of like how food and beer needs to be different for astronauts than people on the ground.

Not surprising this thread is from 5 months ago.

I loves me some Hans Zimmer, but ME3's soundtrack is awesomesauce the way it is.

No. Who would've been better for the soundtrack? Jack Wall.
