I have four level 21 characters: Two warriors, one mage and one rogue.
When I get down to the docks and start the fight the Spirit Demon immediately freezes everybody with a huge tornado like tunnel that burns! Three characters lose 3/4 of their health and my main char loses 1/2. Not only can I not escape this maelstrom, I cannot see through it to attack anything.
I am playing on the Casual level--and so far the best I have done is last about three minutes. I have read spoilers but they usually say things like "Keep your ranged characters back" My characters are as disciplined as a new born pup. Unless I actually control each one, they just weigh in--and quickly die.
I try to heal them, but before the health button recycles they have been beaten to death.
It's the end of the game, so I can just undelete it--but it seems strange that a battle is so impossible when played as this very low level. Any ideas, suggestions, or magic words I can incant while playing that may help?
I cannot win the final battle in The Last Straw

Tough one, I hated/dreaded doing that fight on my playthroughs. I barely survived on my first play through (On the easiest setting) and that only because my spirit mage Hawke and Aveline went toe to toe/back to back against the pride demon she summons (keeping Aveline in the regen aura of my Hawke). Sebastian and Varric glitched and kept walking around doing nothing when my Hawke rezzed them (a known bug at the time). We took the blood mage down first (quickly enough) and then focused on the pride demon next. I don't know if it glitched but the fight seemed to take forever and more and more demons seemed to pop up as I fought (I am on the PC). This was a few days after initial release prior to 1.03. If it was bugged, the patch seems to have fixed it (or maybe subsequent playthroughs I simply got more familiar with the fighting, and it really isn't as long as I first thought).
Plus I use all kinds of mods now to help, and have all the DLC gear.
For strategy, i'd suggest taking the blood mage out ASAP then the pride demon, picking off the little guys after. Sorry, I know I'm not much help with this but...just letting you know someone else has had trouble with it too. It's my least favorite battle in the game.
My most recent playthrough my mage was a 'blow em up' type gal and firestormed/fireballed/tempested the crap out of everything on my screen. Then GW Carver, Fenris and Sebastian picked the rest of them off. She was level 29
Make sure you have plenty of potions (Mythal's favor helps too to res those who drop).

Hmm... you're the Mage right? And you brought Isabela right. She's pretty impossible to keep alive. I wouldn't try and use my magic to keep Aveline alive. Pre-patch I would have brought Fenris to do a Whirlwind against all those Shades which are the problem for me. Does you mage have firestorm? I'd use Isabela to kill the blood mage with twinfangs then auto-attack her and explosive strike if she teleports then chase her around. When the shades come out use all hands on deck. You might have to get Merrill instead of Isabela. But then who would kill the bloodmage?

hmmm.... I tend to bring Varric, Merrill, my Mage Hawke, and Carver as a Warden along for this. What I like to do is use Gravitic Ring on as many Shades as possible and then cast Firestorm and Tempest -- from both mages -- on the group, and for an added bonus Hail of Arrows.
That way, I eliminate the majority of Shades.
I also have Carver use his Templar abilities against the Pride Demon. Silence and Holy Smite work well against it. Then I'll lure it into the general area of the ongoing apocalyptic, electrical hellfire that I cast down upon the field.
Who exactly are you using? Are you using Varric or Isabela? Carver, Aveline, or Fenris? Merrill, Anders, or Mage Hawke?

That pride demon's attack gives you a warning before it is cast. Look for the blue circle on the ground and have everyone move away asap.
If you have your mabari summoned, there is a chance that he will keep the pride demon busy while you focus on the blood mage and shades.
What is your Hawke's class?
After you kill the blood mage, use what crowd control you have at your disposal. Force magic is handy here (especially pull of the abyss), as well as glyph of paralysis and etc. I try to ignore the pride demon as long as possible, because their paralysis vortex thingy attack is really the only thing to fear from them. The blood mage and shades are more of a threat.
If your Hawke is a rogue, and a shadow, use decoy if your tank needs a breather, or if taunt is on cooldown and your squishy companions are getting beat on.

It's easy.
1- Kill the Bloodmage with spike damage asap
2- Go back from who you came from (it will help since the shades won't appear in your back though and you can use AoE's more effectfully)
3- Don't get caught by the Pride Demons AoE while you Bomb the shades (Firestorms, Tempest & Chain Lightings)
if you have Merril you can just run around in the middle of the shades with Wrath of the Elvhen active. (you can evade melee attacks by running around).
Well, and there is the route I take on Nightmare, just kill everything (the bloodmage + Pride demon are dead before they can attack me once) before it can hit you. But I guess this won't work for you.

ah yes. that one i dread all the time as few others, even i had trouble with casual, i usually try to kill blood mage first(i think everyone knows this needs to be done) then i slowly kill the shades, anyone that has used a potion and is about to die again i usually have them run around, trying to keep track, usually anyone by themselves and attacking the demon i usually have them run around to, that is if they are dying fast(either cause of other shades or the demon charges) as well as keeping track where everyone is and where the damned circle trap is.

The way I attack this fight is to hold everyone on the stairs and send the party member (may wish to use Hawke since Hawke can summon dog, but do not summon dog until you are near the stairs. Dog make run down to far and actually get seen by the pride demon. Dog can help slow down the shades and blood mage who stop to attack dog.) with the greatest amount of health slowly down to the blood mage. Once the blood mage circle goes red retreat that party member back to the rest. The blood mage and shades will follow the party member back to the stairs. This will place you out of sight of the pride demon who lurks around the left corner from the statue keeping it out of the fight. It will make the fight easier.
You must take out the blood mage first. Keep a warrior on the mage which will keep the mage from casting. Let the other party members take care of the shades. Keeping Isabela alive will still be tricky, but if you have her dexterity high enough she can survive.
Now go tackle the pride demon. The demon's attack can be predicted as others have stated. You need to have control of all the party members. Move the party out of the trap area. Dog will keep the demon occupied while available. Use range attacks from your mage. Once the demon steps away from the trap or it dissipates attack again. You may want to look at the tactics. Make sure you mage is set to range and If you are using Isabela make sure her script is not aggressive or she will wade right in as will the others if not controlled. Unfortunately Isabela is not a range rogue like Varric or Sebastain. The key is controlling the entire party against the demon.
Hope this helps.

Hold position, move to point, focus fire, electricity staves for mages. It's not that bad particularly since the last patch made nightmare a bit of a faceroll.

It would really help to know who your actual team is
I have only ever played a mage or rogue Hawke. I usually bring Fenris, Aveline, and Anders. I think recently I brought Fenris, Merrill, and Anders. I did once bring Isabela, but she dies pretty quickly.
Everyone is right about killing the blood mage first.
But after that, just make sure the demons don't clump around you and start wailing on you. Move, move, move! Usually Fenris or Aveline + Anders or Merrill can handle the Pride demon. Your job (if you're a mage or a rogue, like I usually am) is to run around the battle field and take out the little guys, boom, boom, boom. It's always tempting to fight like a warrior, to just barrell in there and start ripping arms off bodies. But ... can't do that unless you're actually a warrior
Watch your companions' health. Give 'em a potion if their health drops more than 50%. Although if you brought Anders that really shouldn't be a problem.
Let us know how it goes ... I always play on casual, too. This was indeed a tough one the first couple times I played it.

The easiest time I had with this fight was when I played Shadow/Assassin and team Merril/Anders/Varric (random shoutout for Arelex lol). Party hold position on the stairs, run up to the bloodmage, Assassinate+Twin Fangs (+autoattacks if not dead yet, damn dmg cap), drop Decoy in the middle of the shade group that pops up, nature/electricity staves for mages, Chain Lightning on clustered enemies, stay obsured for +50% crit dmg and proceed to autoattack faceroll the shades, throwing in Backstabs (repositioning), Explosive Strikes, Twin Fangs. When Decoy's gone, summon Dog and Stealth - a free Decoy there. With shades dead, it's just a quick cleanup on the Pride Demon.
With a mage I suppose you could respec if you're having trouble (unless you don't have Maker's Sighs available) and spec Hawke into Great Haste, Chain Reaction, Cone of Cold and Winter's Blast for this fight (lots of crowd control on shades that are immovable by force effects). Dual Haste+high magic=high dps+Hawke's Key will pretty much do the job for you.
With warrior... Berserker. That's the answer to anything concerning warriors in DA2.
