I am replaying the game so I can get the achievements and relieve the wardens tale. When I beat the first time with my dwarven noble didnt think much of the crates at the party camp so you can send the supplies for the elves and what not. This time around I am curious does this do anything except for rp reasons? I am really curious if it helps or not. Thanks

Yes, it improves the help you get near the end. If anyone wants to give additional details, I'll move this into the spoiler forum so it can be talked about freely.

Donating stuff gives you XP.

Some people have said it improves the weapons of the armies fighting for you in the siege, but personally I didn't notice much difference (possibly because I barely used the armies).

I can't remember the details but I remember the feeling that donating gives a very unimpressive return. It does help, but it never makes a significant difference. The best use is to give you XP - donating to elves, Dwarves, and mages/templars gives you 10 XP per item, while donating to Redcliffe soldiers gives you 10, 42, 225 or 750 XP depending on whether you donate 50 silver, 2 gold, 10 gold or 30 gold.

You will probably get the most bang for your buck by donating elfroots. 99 elfroots cost about 60 silver and give roughly 1000 xp. Make sure to give enough to cause the main character to level up. That way everyone you have recruited will also level up.

Early in the game it may take only take 6 or 7 packets of 99 elfroots to gain a level.

Edit:  you must have gained the support of the Dalish elves to do this.
