He was a young, but talented soldier during the First Contact War, serving directly under a general despite his lack of an official rank.  When a Reaper artifact was encountered on Shanxi, a struggle ensued which took the life of someone very close to him.  Exposure to the artifact itself caused strange changes in him, lacing his eyes with sinister technology and giving him visions of a grim, violent, and inevitable future.  Determined to prevent this apocalypse, he desperately sought out more clues, all the while gaining more power and influence thanks to his outstanding charisma, chilling ruthlessness, and a reputation for getting the job done.  He became infamous, a shadowy figure working behind the scenes, altering the balance of the galaxy, absolutely devoted to his species and increasingly violent in his actions.

However, through the influence of the artifact or perhaps something else entirely, he suddenly decides to side with the Reapers instead of opposing them, believing such an action is both a means to power and crucial to survival.  He builds an army and commits atrocity after atrocity, spiraling deeper and deeper into madness as Reaper control drowns out his own spirit and motivation.  He is finally defeated through the effforts of several individuals and races working together, heavily influenced by a human whom he once worked with, a human he betrayed.

Now, am I talking about Saren Arterius or Jack Harper (the Illusive Man)?

There not going to be exactly the same. The point of the thread was just showing that they are similar.

TIM. Saren had to have official rank (turians are primarily military, and I think Evolution 3 or 4 states that Saren achieved many things on his own - hence, he was rather high ranked) and was he even exposed to artifact?

And in Evolution, exactly what Saren was rank-wise remained ambiguous.

(Sorry if I got details wrong--I only ever skimmed the comics in the bookstore and checked details on the wiki, never bought them.)
