So I'm creating a new playthrough that will become my main character. I'm a Spacer/Sole Survivor/ Vanguard. But I have a dilemma on my hands. While I love the play style of the assault rifle, I wonder if I would have more fun using the Claymore Shotgun. I hear that it deals the most damage in a single shot.

The Vanguards are design for close combat, high-risk, lots of damage. I've always been hesitant because I know that if now played correctly, you die A LOT.

So...

Assault Rifles or Claymore Shotgun?

If you have never played a Claymore Vanguard then you HAVE to go that route at least once. Vanguard by definition is high risk high reward, and depending your skill level with the class you may or may not die a bunch.

This. Everyone should play Claymore Vanguard, Revenant Soldier and Widow Infiltrator at least once.

Claymore. Assault Rifles are pretty redundant on the Vanguard since you already have pistols and SMGs.

I concur, if you want the real high risk/high reward approach with your Vanguard, you absolutely MUST play through at least once with the Claymore.

How enjoyable and rewarding that playthrough will be is however tied to your ability to perform the reload trick/glitch.

I'm a contrarian and like to take the sniper rifle for Vanguard.

I love the Claymore as much as the next guy, but, AR training really made my Vanguard feel complete - giving me a good gun to handle mid-to-long ranges in case ever needed. I'll enjoy the the Claymore on my soldier instead.

Besides, the Scimitar was my shotgun of choice for the Vanguard anyway. I don't think I switched it out for any other one at any point after acquiring it.

If you haven't experienced the Claymore though, get a save in before that weapons-training checkpoint to pick it up first and give it a try.

The Claymore is very strong. However I'd argue the Mattock is even better from a min-max point of view. I find the Claymore more rewarding and fun to play, plus it gives me a reason to actually use my smg and pistol.

It's hard not to argue that the Mattock is the best gun in every stat. And that it helps you pick up chicks.

I learned how to play on Insanity by playing a Claymore Vanguard. It was my second Shep; first was a Sentinel on Normal. I died a lot until I learned how to charge wisely, then I only died a normal amount :). Everyone must try Claymore Vanguard once. And please note that the Collector Ship Platform fight is not the best test for what most of the game will be like.

I don't know if nick is listening to his own thread, but most people suggest he try the Claymore at least once on his vanguard.

I chose the Claymore Shotgun once during a playthrough, but I never used it. But from the suggestions, I think I'll try it out.

Claymore Vanguard is actually my second favorite version, with my favorite is Evis/Viper combo, but I have played one on Insanity and it is fun once you get the hang of it. You need to give it time to get used to it, but once you do, it is extremely effective.

It is one of the Icon builds like the Rev Soldier and Widow Infiltrator that really should be played at least once if you haven't already done so.

Hmm, maybe I've made the wrong choice on my first Vanguard playthough then (although I'm only playing it on Veteran, having decided that I'd keep dying all the time at a higher level before I'd worked out how to charge without getting myself killed). Loving it so far, but I took the sniper rifle training to give me a long range option only to find that I'm hardly ever using it.

Reorte, I found that Veteran is actually harder than Hardcore for Vanguards because of enemy defenses. On veteran and below, most enemies don't have shields, barriers, and armor. When you charge them, the fly away from you so fast you have to run after them, chasing them with your shotgun. This resulted in many deaths for me.

On hardcore, all enemies have shields, barriers, or armor. When you charge protected enemies, they are staggered and stay put at shotgun range. A standing enemy can also be used as cover from other enemies. A knocked-halfway-across-the-map enemy cannot be used as cover.

I truly had less trouble with Vanguard and found myself charging far more often once I turned the difficulty up. I should add that I almost never play shooter/action games because I suck and can't aim. If I can do it, anyone can (with determination).

Well, I love having a chance to charge into someone and sending them flying off a ledge, and if you've got an area affect on charge you can knock a group out for long enough to get to safety again. When they're knocked and sent flying I've found the Locust very handy for finishing targets off.

Oh, and charging into a group of unarmoured LOKI mechs is just downright funny.

I tried the claymore route once on a vanguard playthrough while it is extremely powerful I find that having to reload after just one shot annoying. I prefer the evicerator for my vanguards though not quite as powerful still has good power and I don't have to reload it after every shot. So I just pick up the assault rifle training when I hit the Collector Ship and use the mattock for my mid-long range weapon and the evicerator for my shotgun.

My vote is for Mattock. It allows you to use The Tempest as your SMG if you want. It also works great with both Inferno Ammo and Cyro Ammo. It can work at long range or mid range. It also is very good at getting rid of Armor. Last night I faced THe Shadow Broker and the Mattock with Inferno Ammo ate his armor alive. It is just a very nice addition to round out your Vanguard imho.

Claymore 'cos one shotting those who get in the way just never gets old. Never.

Claymore + Inferno ammo is a freaking Hell Cannon, and IMHO it is the best weapon in the game...no contest.

Also, I like to role-play my main Shep as close combat specialist, so Sniper or AR would make no sense. But Charging with krogan shotgun only the chosen few can wield? Yay!

From strictly gameplay perspective, you can Charge approximately 95% of the enemies in the game, and you have access to more than enough other tools to deal with those enemies that can't be charged, so long range/mid range arguments for taking SR or AR hold no water..in my opinion anyway. :wizard:

@kronner I can deff see where you are coming from. If you want to role play then shotgun would be the best choice. My thing is you already have 3 very nice shot guns in M-22, Scmitar and Geth Plasma Shotgun. Adding AR or SR training allows you to have more options in combat. As well as more varied gameplay. I guess what I am trying to see is does the Claymore pose such a signifigant advantage over Scmitar and M-22 that it is worth losing a long range weapon? On the other hand if you know you are only going to go close combat then I agree with Kronner deff go for the Claymore. It should also be noted that most of the other posters have more experience then me so that should be taken into consideration.

Disclaimer:
I am biased, because I absolutely love Claymore in ME2. I also think that unless you take full advantage of the reload cancel trick, Claymore is the least effective shotgun in the game.

Scimitar
is very forgiving, very effective and very easy to use, but I do not like its sound or how little damage it does per shot. It's just not what I'd expect from a shotgun.

GPS is not even a shotgun. It is the unshotgun as the devs called it. It has annoying delay before it gets the shot off. Not very good in close combat. Excellent defense stripper though. IMHO it is the best weapon for Adept.

Eviscerator is basically a Claymore that does less damage and shoots faster. My 2nd most favourite shotgun. I use it on my Sentinel.

Also, do not forget Katana, it is pretty good shotgun. Still, does not do enough damage per shot IMHO.

As for long-range weapon..may I ask, what for? Vanguard's Charge is the ultimate power that gets you up close.
Why would I hold back and shoot from distance when I have such a power? I also have means to set up Warp bombs for occassions such as the bubble walk during the Suicide Mission, when Charge is not an option. And do not forget heavy weapons that are more effective than any other weapon for long or mid-range combat. And again, only about 5% of the enemies can't be Charged.

I already use other shotguns, AR or SR on other classes that are not as good as Vanguard up close.

I suppose Eviscerator + Viper would be a very potent combo, but in my book it does not make up for that special Charge+MuahahaYouAreDead combo Claymore gives you. Claymore also keeps you on your toes as a miss is a costly mistake that usually leads to death.
I must have done at least 15 Vanguard playthroughs and while I have experimented with all shotguns, Claymore is easily the best fit for my playstyle.

^ Kronner is the master of the claymore vanguard, just check out his videos.

The reload trick is key to making it the King of Shotguns, as he says.  I made a simple video to show how to do it
