Why do you care so much about a character's sexual preference?

I- I thought I heard some dramaz in this thread so I came to watch. Then decided to fan the flames. You all aren't fighting enough! More capitals! Sneak some backhanded insults in... we're all mostly grown-ups here, I want to see sneaky underhanded drama! I expect better.Image IPB

Ah well, while I am in here waiting I may as well add my two cents. Stereotypes suck, They should be abolished cause they don't even work well anymore, tired of seeing it in my movies, on my TV shows and in my everyday life. On that note, The only reason they are not gone is because a large, vast, annoying amount of people seem to think that if thats how people are going to see them thats how they should act. Right now unfortunatly it is a minority that see the stereotype they have been labled under and shake it off.

*sigh* blame can probably be laid all over the place. The people thinking of the stereotypes as true should stop, they aren't true, because the sterotype implies that all the people that could be in that catagory ARE in that catagory. Such a tunnel vision/stupid way of seeing the world. The people using a stereotype as an assurance or reason for stupid, annoying behavior should stop cause you are feeding a frenzied crowd of people who want to believe you'll never be anything more then what they have decided you are. And the people who don't fit the stereotype but are labled anyways just cause of way of life/race/gender... you'll have to wait until those badly representing you get shoved out of the public eye before you are seen as more then an exception to the rule. It sucks but as Zev would say, "such is life."

I feel like this needs a ToP. Image IPB

Also on the subject of the thread, They care about the sexual preference of the character because their oh so precious pixels may be besmirched with scadalous talk about town that they may be gay/lesbian. I mean what if one of the untouchables hit on them, what if they accidently hit a flirt button and are forced watch their pixels be flirty back. Oh the stomache curdling shame! What if Garrus see's Cortez hit on Shep and then he starts to gossip with the other crew that Shep might be into guys and then all the females lose interest and their Shep is a "forever alone" Shep! Also it is unrealistic for someone to spend most of their life attrcted to one gender and then to meet someone that stirs feeling, even if that person has a huge connection with you. Yes it is completely unrealistic to be attracted to members of both sex. Unrealistic to think that just because they never mentioned it before is because they never felt anything for the other gender before. Image IPB

And the only character who has implicity ruled out same sex relations in the entire series is Jack.  All the others could be bisexual or even closeted gays trying to pretend they are straight.  Does that mean all of them should be?  Of course not, but you shouldn't be offended unless Jack decides to bed a female Shepard.

I was only ever offended by Anders in DA2, who penalized you on freindship for turning him down because you could only let him down hard.  Ridiculous set up and reaction, and terrible writing, all wrapped up in poor game design.

You don't really lose that many points do you? And is there a way to let down someone that doesn't lose you a few IRL frienship points?

You shouldn't lose any if you can find the right words, unless the person is militantly gay and doesn't understand why you would possibly be straight.  Anyone who is homosexual knows this, it is unrealistic to punish the player for saying no to a romance, regardless of sexuality, when that romance has not started.  It is equally unrealistic to not have an option to politely state your preference.  I have had gay freinds proposition me before, and I am still freinds with them to this day, having turned them down nicely.  I've also had that same situation done straight, and I am still freinds with those girls who did not succesefully gain my attention.  Unless their point was that Anders was incredibly egocentric and terrbily poor at managing his expectations, then there was no point.

Every advance turned down should have punished the player then, regardless of character, regarless of persuation.  While true that Anders penalized you male or female, it was still a stupid idea, and it offended me on my Lady Hawke playthrough first.

It depends on the person, not their sexual orientation.

Losing friendship points isn't being punished, though. It's a way of catagorizing responses using a rather simplified system. You can be polite, but just because you're polite doesn't mean a person won't be hurt.

Say I ask my best friend out and they're not interested. They tell me that as kindly and politely as possible. Because they're my friend, they know exactly the right thing to say to minimize the damage. Note the word "minimize".  I still feel hurt. Not because they were rude or because I think I have some sort of right to date them or because I'm egocentric. It's disappointment. I worked up the courage to ask them, so I've already started to kinda imagine what it'll be like, yada yada, and they told me "no".  I'm going to like my friend a little less for awhile.

That's not a thing about sexuality. The story doesn't really change depending on the sexes involved (although if it's a same sex pal, I might feel complicated emotions dealing with how I view my own sexual orientation and all that, but that can be ignored for the moment). And it's certainly not me punishing my friend. It's me responding to something that hurt by being hurt.

Note that my friend turning me down (and your Hawke turning Anders down) didn't kill the friendship. It lost a few points. That you can gain back by doing things, like gifting a vuvuzela or freeing mages. I'll let you figure out who wants what.

Anders was a fumble on the devs side.

That said.

A. Its only 15 points. I lost more than that just for being a mage and recruiting Fenris
B. It's easily avoidable (unlike the above)
C. It's easily cancelled out.

You forgot the part where it was actually completely in character for anders. Annoying and uncomfortable? Oh yes, but actually quite realistic.

Oh realistic defintely.

But I was never one to argue in favor of realism over player comfort.

Plus I was annoyed with it happening with Fenris too. Damn rivalry points screwing up my mage friendship plays. <_<

Like Cerberus and Ashley's appearance, this topic is one that just won't die.

And just like in those topics, the angry fighting is a constant source of entertainment.

Actually, it's like the first 'whine about s/s' topic here in months. Looks like people actually don't care that much. Opps. I know it ain't going the way you wanted, you would hope for pitchforks and occupy BioWare but the truth is, it REALLY ain't an issue, and even the biggest opponents at one point realize that.

Of course. Until people can deal w/ their insecurities, this won't go away.

People just want characters to be their own character, unique; this is just one of the characteristics.

Now, having thought about it, I think it could be done well as long as it isn't exactly the same as the way the characters would normally act; for example, a Shepard romancing Miranda should have different scenes leading up to it based on if the Shepard is male or female.

I want to start a thread on who facepalms more, bioware a the fanbase, or the fanbase at bioware.

Bioware mod: Chris, They're fighing about s/s opstions... again.

CP: Really? Seriously? Anything new?

BM: Nope.

CP: *facepalm* I swear, it's like having a forum of five year olds... go put them in seperate corners again... use the Shep line "I want a deck between you at all times understood." They should get a kick out of that, maybe keep them from hair pulling for a minute.

See...now this is stereotyping.

I can't speak for others, but I've been calling for Bioware to include gay characters ever since I signed up. Naturally, just how they do it is the what we're all arguing about.

Or maybe they can take the easy way out and make everyone bi. =]

Oh my God! Who the hell cares?!

Are we really still stuck on this? It's like 'effin' clockwork. I <3 BSN, I reall do. I also <3 a lot of people who post here, even those I don't necessarily agree with. But sometimes I just see these repeated threads (which I lovingly call "The 50 Cent threads" because they REFUSE to die) and I can't help but think:

They mentioned a transperson in Mass Effect?

(Gender identiy does not count as a sexual orientation, so no, trans doesn't "count towards gay".)

@foxhound109

Because it's adult content rarely covered in games and if you want to be condescending and post retarded Disney links, do it somewhere else.
