Listen to the teaser music and let us know what you think about this great team!

WOW! Just WOW! This sounds like a remake from the theme played in ME1 when the Alliance destroys sovereign!

Really, compare above theme with THIS and you hear what I mean.

It is.  Mr. Hulick has confirmed he based it off that piece  (and that he's writing another based on it as well).

Rob Blake wrote...

The direction for the Mass Effect music from the beginning was to have an orchestral score with certain elements replaced by synths in order to create an interesting retro-futurism style that gave it a 'timeless' quality... thus working well in sci-fi and lasting us through the years.

If we'd made something modern sounding at the time when ME1 came out then it would either feel very dated now or we'd have to change the style to keep it 'modern'... thus losing a bit of identity and character with the franchise.

Likewise, if we had a purely orchestral score it would lose its sense of character and identity, becoming too generic and pulling you out of the world and feel that we're trying to create.

There is no intention of changing this style at all. We did push it a little more towards orchestral in certain areas of ME2 because it was a darker story with more thriller/horror inspired moments at times. But that has no reflection on where we're going with ME3. It is it's own story with a whole lot more ups and downs, interesting characters and locations but most of all with far more emotion and plot twists than we've ever had before.

Now, sometimes we bend the music rules for effect on specific scenes where we want to focus more on the emotional angles (which orchestras tend to work slightly better for as they're more expressive and culturally more emotive) or the techy/stylistic angles (which synths are much better at portraying in the ME universe) or even intensity/action (which both angles can emphasize in different ways). So basically, we try to find the most suitable style or feel for each particular moment.

Thanks everyone :)

That is, scarily, pretty much exactly what I wanted to hear.

Rob Blake is one clever dude. The man knows what he's doing. All my worries for ME3 are pretty much gone at this point.

Can BioWare's audio team do anything wrong?

It ain't much to go on, can't decide if I like it or hate it, anyhow if the music is anything like what I saw in the leaked beta with that kid getting killed, heal yeah! that's some awesome music right there.

Not that I have a problem with who was included, but I'm saddened that Jack Wall, the guy who gave us the Mass Effect theme and the music for the Suicide Mission is no longer on the team. Was there any particular reason he wasn't brought back?

Agreed, Suicide Mission was incredible. But I'm pretty sure Hulick wrote the Mass Effect Theme.

Well yes they both worked on that song to some degree. Sorry, what I meant was that the actual main theme melody that you can hum, Hulick wrote.

According to Jack wall, Sam composed the lion's share of Shepard's theme. Source

This is Sam's version: www.youtube.com/watch

impossible to guess where that trailer will actually fit in... ( slightly annoyed..haha) .
could be the very end : sadness , all energy spent but with undertones of hope.
or it has enough of a romantic flavour to be used as an LI theme.

anyway, i'm sure the soundtrack will be great.
just over 2 month away !

Mr. Hulick mentioned himself being in the process of composing the LI music after this snippet was released, so that's not it. I'm inclined more towards an epilogue-ish thingie. I know there will be several and probably vastly different endings, but this tune might settle well with a "victory through great sacrifices" type of scene.

Do we have any news on a soundtrack release? I'm aware it's early, but I'm interested in if we're going to get a physical album, and whether or not the release will be complete, or if they'll pull a Mass Effect 2 and release side albums.

We don't know yet, but I certainly hope for a full physical release somewhere down the line. If the OST will be as powerful as the team behind it, LOTS of people will wanna buy it. Simple fact :)
