Because you didn't quote or read the whole post originally - I'll put it here again for you.

Its a beautiful piece - but it doesn't sound Mass Effecty.

I suppose context is needed, because the romance music from ME1 felt out of a place with the rest of the music.

But its still a fantastic piece, the first half is very haloish. Which is always a good thing.

Edit : Never mind - just saw this post - http://social.biowar...56159/2#8856617
Sounding superb.

To be fair this isn't much of an explanation for what is 'Mass Effecty' music. Basically you admitted you needed context but you never really gave any thing other than saying the romance music felt out of place..

The link covers it. But basically a mixture, not straight up orchestral or straight up synth.

Alright just saw the link. Yeah they seem like they will be using both in the game. I always suspected it from the Collectors Edition video.

Rob said everything I wanted to say, and I'm too busy wrapping up the score to get involved in a full discussion, so.. yeah. :)

But what he's said and a few of you have said is right on: Mass Effecty = the marriage of orchestral with vintage synth elements. If you wanted to go a step further, you could say also that original ME1 music direction stated that the synths were to be placed in the same hall reverb as the acoustic instruments (one of ME's trademarks). We bend the rules & go 100% orchestral sometimes for really emotional or powerful moments, e.g. if your space hamster dies, you want a really sad/emotional string piece, not synths. SPACE HAMSTER NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

So long as we agree that a tribute music video to the space hamster should feature a very raw industrial vibe, of course.

:D

I look at individual instruments as voices in a choir.  More to the point, colors in a painting.  Sure some colors don't go well together, but as long as the painting looks great and evokes feeling, who cares that random forum goer C doesn't like pink.  Its still a great painting.

I don't care what musical insturments you guys use, I care that you evoke feeling.  So far, you work and the work of the others have exceeded my expectations in every entry.

I look forward to more!  Image IPB  Keep up the good work!

Technically, it already has. If you listen to the Collector unboxing vid, you'll notice the theme playing is an alternate version of that theme.

Good explanations from those behind the scenes. But I have to then wonder why the sample chosen was something more as an exception to the rule over something more "Mass Effecty" (i.e. why was it a purely orchestral piece rather than something that better represents Mass Effect as a whole with something mixing synth and orchestral?)

After reading Rob's explanation and finally listening to it I was wondering that as well. The whole time I was waiting to hear some synths but I never did.

I think it was just not the best example, despite being a nice piece in general.

Likely chosen because it is based on "Victory" from ME1, which, as this thread attests, is a piece many found pretty memorable.  It also had no synths.  Then again, the idea may have actually been to recall "From the Wreckage" which is very similar (and is also synthless).

ETA: of course, even the strings and such are typically not live instruments, IIRC, so technically even the orchestral stuff is synth.  But that's picking nits, and god forbid we do such a thing on the BSN.

This sounds very epilogue-ish/aftermath-like.

Very, very nice sample.

Any chance we can get a sample of the music that plays when Shepard leaves earth? The one from the beta, when the reapers are landing. That piece was awesome.

To be honest, even though i've heart some pretty good pieces in the trailers, the new sample soundtrack sounded it belongs more into WWII film.
