Suicide by Aura of Pain...

I have just the basic skill, without upgrades. In Ser Varnell's fight, I activated that skill right in the middle of one those "righteous " mobs.
Damn. My Hawke's health instantly went down from 270 hp to no more than a few pixels in her heath bar. . I deactivated the ability of course, but it was too late....She died in less than 2 seconds.
I tried it again in a less numerous crowd (like 4 guys). Her health "only" went down from 100% to 50%, or something like that.
I have 90% spirit resistance, but I read that gives no protection against it.
Is that how is supposed to work ? The more targets you hit (in one pulse) the more self-inflicted damage you take ?
Just curious, tbh. Seems to be suicide either way

It might be bugged. I can't think of a Reaver build that uses Aura of Pain and I've never used it myself, so that might be a huge bug that no one's caught on to yet.

The 1st part I activate Aura of pain with a bunch of enemies. Pretty much oneshotted...
The 2nd, only 3 maybe 4, around 50% drop.... (I play on Hard, not Nightmare so no FF to be worried about there)
The other time I used a Reaver was back in march/april.... Probably before the patches. I don't know what could have changed...
Edit: back then, the health loss was something to be mindful of, but still useful, specially with those weak enemies that are a PITA to take one by one

Is your game up to date patch-wise? I think there were issues with AOP before the last patch where if you had an item equipped that dealt 100% of damage back you could one shot your self with it.

You mean gear with the 100% damage against enemies in melee attack ?
Yes, I have that. In fact, two of them. One is the chest piece of the Dark Knight Armor set by LapisLazzuli
The other is one ring/belt/whatever you get in Legacy. I'm under the impression they stack up.
If this is supposed to be fixed with the latest patch, then it must be some mod I'm using. Got a bunch of them, but aside from the Sunder fix and another one to remove character restrictions from items, I don't mess around with the gameplay mods.
I guess I could try removing all mods (except the armor set) and see if AOP still behaves like that just in case they're the cause...

I purged my override folder and tried that fight again. My Hawke wasn't obliterated by that power.
At least I know it's not the modded armor. I left that only piece and AOP still works fine. But I currently have 45 subfolders in override, many of them with more than one file, so establishing which one is causing trouble could take a while.
Damn.

What mods do you run? If we just knew them someone might be able to pinpoint the likely offender without as much work as you having to probe your way through all that.

If I wear the Dark Knight chestpiece alone (that being the only mod loaded) AOP is fine. But if I wear the Ichor ring ( Legacy ) too, that's when the troubles begin....

Looks like the problem is wearing two pieces of that gear that has the damage reflection thing.

I don't quite remember, was Legacy before or after 1.03?
If the former is the case, it may not be affected by the patch, as added data is hard to patch unless you patch the DLC specificly, or so my very limited "knowledge" let's me to conclude.
I will be having a Reaver warrior uo too in the next time and will hopefully remember to test that out. If it is a recurring problem I am sure to come back here (or in another thread just like this should I forget!).

As far as I can tell, the fix was a script tweak, though, so I have no idea what could logically interfere with that, or why it would only bug AoP and not blood magic or frenzy.
