Is there a deadline for this contest?
I really want to enter but I'm pretty busy and might not finish my story in time...

EDIT: Whoops, January 10 not January 5.

Oh now I know why January 5 came to mind! That's when Public Enemies is being shown on USA. I've made it a point to watch that.

I've also made it a point to read the book Public Enemies, which has just sort of been sitting on my bookshelf for a while now.

Couple of quick questions.
When you say English, do you mean US or UK? (armor/Armour etc.)
Is there an age limit to the competition?

I was wondering the same thing. And I still need to trim 300 words!:pinched:

I wondered about that too, but then submitted it with "armour." It's a point of national pride. ;) (PS. I'm Aussie, not UK.)

Also, Templars favour Vegemite. (No, just kidding.)

I'm pretty sure the judges won't penalise the use of British English so long as it's consistent throughout the story. Usually how it goes.

But screw up your elvish (eg. lethallin vs lethallan) and you're in trouble. ;)

The judges are all Canadian and we Canucks spell "colour" with a U. Well, we're supposed to, anyway.

With Old Tevine/Arcanum/whatever, we don't have many examples to go from. Before DA2, it was supposed to look something like an ancestor to King's Tongue/English, I think more on the Germanic side than the Latin (source: a David Gaider forum post I've long since misplaced). But Fenris's modern Tevine lines sure look like faux-Latin to me, so you're probably OK there.

But for elvish, try: http://dragonage.wik.../Elven_Language

@Tryynity -- Hehe, I didn't mean to scare you or anything. Also, it's not like I'm judging. XD

Check the wiki, like Corker said, but take it with a grain of salt. :)

I was about to include a character's height and weight in the midst of a describey bit, but wasn't sure if it was kosher to use height and weight or if I was going to have to seek out some kind of converter. In the end I took a third option and figured out a more abstract way of describing the dude's dimensions.  Ah, sweet minutiae.

Not one of my best, but...

Brothers At Work - Templar Order

Got dwarf dust from a man from West Hill
He was six foot four and full of muscle
I said, "Will this give an advantage?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich

And he said,
"I come from a Templar Order
Have strong minds, are mage warders
Holy smite takes no quarter
You better run, you better take cover."

Yes I used the Wiki - and Google translate for Latin. Its Old Tevene and so should be different techically to Modern Tevene. Unless it is written somewhere, it cannot be lore.

Trouble is all my lore knowledge is purely sourced from game knowledge and DAwiki - I have yet to purchase the books and read them -although they are on my list.

This is so much fun - I am so excited. It was great of Bioware to do this.

I'll give it a shot.

My preview for my oneshot: Magi's Heart

He had always been alone ever since he entered that Tower in the middle of the lake.

Hated by the Templars, distrusted by his fellow Magi.

Rikal had no one to rely on but himself and his dream of freedom.

Through ten years of training, he has gained power and fame but nary a step closer to his dream.

When he finally gains it, however, he finds his dream to be nothing more than a nightmare. A nightmare set about not even through his own choosing.

"You may control our bodies, you may seal our minds and emotions, but there is one thing you TEMPLARS WILL NEVER HAVE NOR UNDERSTAND! NEVER UNDERESTIMATE A MAGI'S HEART!"

Thanks for offering this amazing opportunity! I was very excited to read about it, and even more excited to work on my entry piece. After a great deal of agonizing revising and editing, I finally submitted it this evening. However, now it has my nerves on edge; probably not the best thing to do right before bed! I do need to be coherent for work tomorrow...

One question I do have, that was not answered in this thread yet: is there a point at which entrants can hope to hear anything regarding their work? Will only finalists receive any sort of notification, or can all entrants hope to get at least a form rejection so they know? Just curious, to ease my thudding pulse. Thanks!

lol  How bad can the penalty be?  The devs themselves haven't always gotten it right.  :bandit:

Oh man, I'm really excited about this contest! What a great way for writers to finally flex some of their creative muscles!

I'm planning on submitting mine sometime in the next few days. My initial draft had over 4,000 words! Ugh, editing is such a blow, I feel like I'm cutting away pieces of my heart as I trim it. Haha, too melodramatic? Well, it at least feels like I'm taking away important details of the story.

Good luck to everyone!

I agree, Kat, 2500 is very limiting but I suppose that is where the "challenge" comes in ;) Sometimes great stories can be told in as few words as possible. Perhaps thinking like a bard would help. When they sing songs of glorious battles I am sure they keep it all under 2500 words :D

That was my lame impersonation of the French knight in Monty Python.

Approach the word limit like an old professor of mine said, you have so much time (word count) to make your point, and if you cannot make it that time (word count) then you cannot make your point. Check your phrasing to see if one word can eliminate the use of three or four. Like as an example "the warrior shifted his weight on his left foot and spun his sword around him" to perhaps something like "the warrior pivoted to his left swinging his sword"...both make the same statement but the second with less word usage. Hope this helps, anyway. :)
