Oh, but we have to include a word count. Just received the message. I thought I'd let you know.

OH, have to include word count? In the document? I just included it in the email text for aesthetic reasons, and I figured that if they can see the word count if they open it in Word anyway. Hopefully that will do!

Also, Jessica Merizan, I Bccd myself when I submitted my entry and the email ended up in my spam box. So if you could check your spam or junk folder too when collecting the entries, that would be swell! :P Thanks.

If you could get the permission of the winner or top five to have their stories actually put up on the site or in a thread for everyone to see, that'd be really cool; I'm very interested to read them, and I know a lot of people will be too shy to send PMs requesting to read the stories.

Also, Mass Effect creative writing competition plz!

The first version of my tale took itself way too seriously.
So I rebuilt it from the ground up.
Now it's not so serious.

I did something similar. I found my little yarn veering uncomfortably close to melodrama, so I rewrote the same story from the perspective of a different character and was heartened to find the cheese factor dialed back significantly. It's still a little cheesy, but that's just because I'm a hack.

Ah, makes sense. I sent a .pdf and .doc so that they can choose whichever they prefer.

Yes, why hire writers to pen the next Dragon age script when they can trick the lot of us into doing it for the price of FREE!

!!!!!  I missed that.  I didn't include one!  Crud!  It was only 1,518 so it is pretty obvious it is under the limit...  This disqualifies me, doesn't it?  Don't mind me as I go into a corner and cry.   :crying::crying::crying::crying:

I'm going to add a link in my original abstract post that will point to the full version after the contest.  That way people can read it if they'd like, but don't have to PM me.  It'd be cool if others did so as well.  I'd love to read them all!

My first attempt was at comedy, but was getting way too long. My submission is rather somber, but I hope it isn't too melodramatic.

You are not required to include a word count and won't be disqualified if you didn't send that info. Just makes things a bit easier for me, but not a requirement.

And ignore @Biotic Budah, that's ridiculous and I would never abuse the community in that way. Take your trolling and paranoia somewhere else, kindly.

If someone submits a story with the same story title, similar theme and possible like ideas and posts it after yours, should we be worried? I'm not accusing fellow writers of plagiarism, just curious on everybody's thoughts ;)

@Gazzet, I have my doubts entries would be read if they exceed the limitation that everybody else was instructed to uphold. :(

If James Ellroy can cut a 900-page novel down to a 350-page novel, you can definitely find a hundred words your story can do without. It would certainly beat getting disqualified, right? Just start hacking and whacking and smacking, and you'll be back under word count in no time, Butcher Pete.

Care to clarify? :?

I found the entries you meant but I do not think it's the same story at all. But of course, one can't tell for sure.

EDIT: Submitted my entry. Hope everything goes smoothly. I don't trust technology. <_<

I wouldn't be.  The contest theme (mages and templars) suggests that certain elements pertaining to mages and templars are going to show up a lot. I mean, we could all be writing stories about Ines's epic quest to find the northern prickleweed or the day Finn *finally* found the Tevinter scroll that defined "eluvian," but generally, we're all focused on the things that make mages and templars different from other kinds of characters.  So yeah, more than one person may look into lyrium addiction, or abominations, or apostasy.  I'd be a little surprised if there wasn't some overlap.

Sent mine in a little while ago and I'm really happy with it. Good thing the word count wasn't higher. I could've gone on forever with that story. I had a lot of fun writing it. Good luck to everyone.

Contest ends 11:59pm PST on the 10th.

2500 is a strict limit. We won't read it if your story is over.

Remember your abstract MUST be posted in the Abstract thread or you will be disqualified!

People will have a hard time plagerizing your story from an abstract unless you've posted it in it's entirety elsewhere. Ultimately, even if someone was inspired by your abstract (which would be a shame, though imitation can be flattering etc) we'll be able to tell.

However, as with all art contests remember this cannot be completely objective. Several members of the community team will be reading these though so we will do our best to keep things completely fair!

Good luck in this last push :)

My story is set just outside kirkwall after the war between the mages and templars. In my story Hawke sided with the templars (although Hawke recieves no mention in my story). Even though the Templars were right (reinforced by hawke's actions) Ser Gavin begins to question his role as he is sent to the bone pitt to look for Shari, an apostate who had escaped durring Merideth's reign. This story was inspired by Wynne's stance in Asunder, however it does not take any aspects from the books plot line.

His sister did everything to protect his freedom, to make him understand that all human beings should have the right of choice. Now she is dead and Gred has to face his two greatest foes alone: his sister's lover, the templar who betrayed them and his own conscience. There is never an easy answer and every choice seems wrong...

He left the Templars before the war, guided by a Spirit of Foresight. When they found out, they cursed him and called him an abomination. He wandered the countryside aimlessly, suddenly bereft of the duty and camaraderie that he had come to know among the Templars. In search of a purpose, he came to Kirkwall, and came across a purpose, a reason to live, and a way to protect the people.
