Hmm.. I honestly think people should worry about how the winner's story would compare to our own. Seeing how it was chosen by an industry professional and all ;) I'm more anxious about that than the selection process itself. ;D Regardless of the outcome, I think one should see this as a learning experience :)

Mmmmm, not sure about that. Not all stories or writing styles appeal to the same people. Not only that, but we haven't been told the explicit judging criteria. What the people judging this like may not be the same as what other people like, the same way not everybody reads books by the same author. If there was only one judging/editing criteria that the world had to follow, not nearly as many books would exist, and as for the ones that exist now, they aren't any greater or lesser than each other: just different.

I don't think people should try and compare the winner's story to theirs at all. I mean, yes, it's good to read the winning entries to see what styles and language they use and how they're put together, but if you constantly compare your work to someone else's, you'll never develop your own style. I've entered contests, lost, then looked at the winning entries and gone, "Whoops, my entry really wasn't the sort of thing they were looking for." And that's not a bad thing - there are always more contests and more writing opportunities out there. Yeah, it's good to write something that you think or know people will want to read, but you should never try and be anybody but yourself. Trite? Maybe, but again, there are a whooooooole lotta different books out there.

I judge every book/story I read by a simple principle...

- How hard was it to put down/walk-away, how keen am I to get to the end.

The harder and faster - the higher the score Posted Image

I judge a book on how much I think about the characters and the world once I've stopped reading it. So, I suppose it's really the same thing as you, just how I want to get 'back' to reading it.

I agree with AndrastesGrace.

("A small white wildflower, commonly known as Andraste's Grace." I love that description from Origins. Simple. Don't mind me. I'm obsessed by item descriptions.)

I'm sure there will be lots of entries that will be worthy of winning, but ... who knows. A particular theme or idea might grab whoever is reading it, and if it's well written then great. Or something which is flawlessly written might have its own kind of magic.

I've read a couple of entries I think are excellent - just shared privately, editing etc - but they're excellent for different reasons.

I agree the characters are just as important, if not moreso than the story.

I am still hooked on Dragon Age Origins - because of Zevran and the supporting cast... Posted Image  Okay, so he was really the supporting cast, but he is the leading man in my story LOL

Except, even though you want to get to the end fast, at the same time you don't want it to finish at all!

I actually think that's a very good way to learn.  (Especially if this same contest is done a second time.)

I'd guess that there are a lot of criteria that will go into this.  But exactly what they are isn't entirely known.  (I'm going to guess at conformation to universe, treating the universe in a way that's seen as respectful, high writing quality, etc.)  That said, if when the winners come out, all are angsty love stories, or all are tales of high adventure, you sort of know what the judges want.  If there's a diverse mix, you know that as well, too.

Definitely a good guideline for any submission is to read stuff that the editors have previously liked.  This is no different, other than that this time, there are no prior submissions.  (So it's hard to tell.)

Everyone needs to relax a little bit. You're getting stressed out about things that are too late to change. Worrying wont affect your odds of winning, so just shrug it off and wait until the winners are announced. If you win, you'll be laughing about how scared you were, and if not, then you know your next story will be better.

^-^ I was thinking the same thing. It's too late to change things, so why worry?

I'd still be worried about posting it online till the winners are announced as its a very grey area in the rules. It might still ruin your chances of winning, but I can wait. It's not like my story is going anywhere.

Ha, wish I could be so patient. As it is, though, if it disqualifies me, it disqualifies me--the damage is already done, I'm not going to back pedal on it. It's always been more about the sharing for me than the winning. Doesn't mean that I'm not curious about the winners, tho. ^_~

If you're in such a hurry, you could lower a rope or a tree branch or find something useful to do. :P

Patience, grasshopper. They have a lot of entries at 10 to 12 pages a pop...that's a lot of reading to do. ;)

10-12 a pop? Mine was ~2300 words and was four pages exactly.

using font size 12 with double spacing give or take. Was a ballpark guess, but still a lot of reading. :P

Mine was 1747 words at 6 pages using the above settings on word.

:D Nice reference :P

FYI, Mine was 5 1/2 pages.  I wonder if I should have double-spaced.  I think you double-space professional manuscript submissions.  I used TNR 12 pt since it's considered the default text of choice and it's what's used in MLA and APA.

Yeah, I stuck to 12pt TNR, but didn't double space. I'm backwards, and 2x space makes it harder to read things for me.

Yeah, I hate trying to read double-spacing. It annoys me. Mine was single-spaced too.

And yeah, wonderful reference. Hopefully no one's waiting at the top to kill us though. Posted Image

I thought about double spacing, but since they didnt ask for it - I didnt give it. Also no one stated style, so I picked one typical to the printing in a book. I figured its easy on the eyes.

I hate trying to read some font styles. I dont know if other people have this problem.

That's the perfect criteria. Even though I want to know the end I try to delay the it. I'm kinda weird this way. :?

I guess that's the criteria, ne?

Mine was Verdana 9, line distance 1.5 (my usal settings). 6 pages and 2032 words. Now, what's this going to be? Length comparison? :P

Courier New is probably the easiest font in the universe to read, because of those big fat serifs. I've used it on everything since high school, but that was only because it's a big font and let me get away with writing less.

Mine was also TNR size 12, single-spaced. That's the same format I've always used. It came out to four pages with exactly 2,500 words, including the title.
