There's something about the Tranquil that I find really compelling, I guess. So far the game seems to have broadly painted Tranquility as "Oh no, run away. It's the worst thing that could possibly happen." This is an impression I got, even in spite of those Tranquil who willingly chose the Rite and who appear to be "fine." I guess I wanted to look at the broader impact of the Tranquil in society and the fact that, if making someone Tranquil is morally OK, how does that affect the way other people treat them.

Sorry. This is turning into an essay. I just love the Tranquil. :)

(Edit: Just saw the edit. Nonetheless, I find the idea of a Tranquil whispering fascinating in of itself. Whispering implies so many things. Can a Tranquil keep a secret for example? Why would anything compel them to do so.)

The "oh no, run away..." was exactly what I had in mind when I wrote the story, though. And the 'whispers' too; those little voices seemed like an idea worth exploring...

I can certainly understand the impulse to run away. :)

(I want to read all the Tranquil related stories.)

Was it challenging to use a detached narrator?

It was challenging.

I wanted to show that people can care about someone who is Tranquil, even if the Tranquil person can't care back. That's why I chose that narrator. I was trying to make the narrator look at the Tranquil with a caring eye, rather than getting him to say, "Gee, I really think that Tranquil person is awesome" specifically. I really don't know if it came across that way. Someone reading it might not get that at all. I don't know.

(Sorry to everyone else in the thread. I've hijacked it with Tranquil love. I should shut up.)

Also, as an odd aside, when I was a HS teacher, "Tranquil person" was common vernacular for "person who is currently affected by an illegal drug."

[smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/lol.png[/smilie]  But it was fun to talk about the Tranquil!

Is that what 'tranquil person' means? Never knew that.

You really should read "Asunder" Firky (could the title also be a reference to the rite of Tranquility?).  "Obedience is prudent. To interpret it as a lack of free will would be an error." So in answer to your question... Yes!!!

Uh oh. In that case it probably contradicts my story! And you've just totally made we wonder something totally new....... Oh. My. Goodness.

Still, yes, I will read it. (I just thought it was counterproductive to the motivation of doing a good job, to buy the book if I was entering a comp to win the book.)

@Mahati Although the term "Tranquil person" reminds me of silly teenagers and their word for "drug affected", I don't like the idea of calling someone "A tranquil." It's like the difference between saying "Billy is gay." and "Billy is a gay." If you say someone is "a gay" you are defining their whole person by their sexuality or sexual preference. If you say that "Billy is a gay person." then he is a person who also happens to like other guys. Many people wouldn't care, but I think it's an important semantic difference. When it comes to writing, whoever read my story may have no idea that I never once referred to the protagonist as "a tranquil" but hopefully my usage of "tranquil person" subtly helped convey the idea that it was the person that was emphasized. But, really, I have no idea. It was an experiment.

You make a good point, Firky. You know, some of the books I've received for review hardly pay any attention to choice of words and are peppered with discrepancies, until the narrative turns into a mess, and you're no longer sure what's being said.

It's a shame, really.

That's what I did too. Thought it would be interesting to explore what might happen if one of Flemeth's daughters attempted to summon a demon in hopes of escape. I judged it was right inside the bounds of the rules, yet hopefully interesting enough to be worthy of notice. I hope my story won't be disqualified.

Yeah, I think the abomination POV would just depend on how much of the mage is still aware within the abomination. Technically, my entry features two mages, but the second is only glimpsed as himself, and the only time he speaks, it's his possessing spirit that is speaking, not the mage. If that had been my only mage character, I don't know if it would have qualified. It wasn't the only mage, or even my primary one, though, so I thought it worked well.

Haha, I'm assuming they're quite busy with entries, not to mention whatever other daily tasks they have, but yeah. Every time I get a "Reply to a subscribed topic" email and it's not one where Jessica or Chris have replied, a little bit of me dies inside. :P

But in all fairness, I think this has been anticipated. In DAO I found a female Tranquil in the circle quest who had obviously been interfered with by the demons who comments: "That was unpleasant". Also in DAO in one of the Denerim subquests you discover that the Tranquil in "Wonders of Thedas" has taken sides in a criminal feud...

In DA2 didn't Gaider comment on that occurrence where three Templars have captured a mage and are asking her to consent to sex with them and one of them says, "If you refuse, we'll make you Tranquil and then you'll consent anyway."? Basically David said this this was a misinterpretation of Tranquility...

Now, let's have discussion about the Catholic understanding of the concept of "Free will..." [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie]

There's also a comment that's along the lines of "do not mistake lack of emotion for approval" or something like that.

Please tell me that by "next week" you mean "in a few days" considering how today is Saturday. Otherwise I think the anticipation'll kill me. Posted Image

We have gathered here together to lay this humble soul to rest. The time we spent together cannot be erased and our memories will always keep AndreastesGrace with us. :P

No, seriously. I guess it will take a month or so. The question is, if they announce the first five winners, and then a week later the choosen winner by David Gaider, or if they do everything together.

It would be interesting if it turned out that the stories written by the runner ups had their works made into codex entries, companion mentions, or significant elements of a companions background for the next game. The overall winner could also have their story made into a side quest line. Not saying it'll happen, but I think that would be a cool surprise.

Haha, personally, I think/hope they will give us an ETA around Monday. But there is a lot of work in reading over 400 entries, choosing the top five, checking grammar and spelling, making sure nothing has been plagurised and then once they've done all that David Gaider will need to find time to chose his favourite so I wouldn't be suprised is it took at least another two weeks or so. That said, I'm only guessing I have no real idea! ;) Patience young grasshopper(s)!

ColorMeSuprised - That's a really good point about them announcing the top five before Gaider chooses the winner, I hope they do that!! :wizard:

Oh! That would be really nice. I guess whoever wins something like that will faint on the spot as soon as they read that in the codex entries. I would at least. Then I would make a screenshot and show it to everyone who does (a few) or doesn't (the most part) want to know. I'd be a total pain.

If it does happen, I know that whoever wins will develop a huge ego. I know I would.

But it would be a cool thing. Maybe not only for the one who wins, but also for the five best. I might hope to much, but it would be nice to have your story acknowledged in such a way.

Unless the winner agrees to get absolutely nothing out of it, this would be fraught with legal dangers. Including the possibility of being sued. :P

A large reason, I think, why many published authors don't acknowledge reading fan fiction based on their own IP.

After reading some of the entries posted in the other forum I think I may have made a mistake using a 3rd person subjetive narrator... crap... :pinched:
