"respect for the Intellectual Property"

What exactly does this mean? No cameos by existing characters? No references to plotlines from the games/etc? No adding details and being limited to the well... limited amount of information we've already been given about how the mages and templars operate?

The exact words were "understanding and respect". I think that means you have to write fiction that would actually fit in the Dragon Age universe. If your idea for a story involves depicting mages as magical ponies and the templars as giant mecha, it doesn't fit.

Can you define "excessively" violent? I find combat to be an important part of Dragon Age pieces, so it would be nice to know how much is too much.

Nah. They should be depicted as tentacle monsters.

This miiiight be a silly question, but--for the mage or templar that's at the center of the story, should it be an original character, an already established character from the franchise, or are both OK?

Sent mine in Chris (Attached as a PDF, let me know if I be'a needing to to send it in in another format)

Anywhoo, heres the wee blurb:

~ ~ ~ ~

Always There

We all want for things in life. We all need for things in life. Whether it be for money, safety, drink, love, power or simply being able to see the next day anew. Our desires, our temptations, our choices, shape us, even if the end isn’t always how we want it. For a runaway Mage and an Ex-Templar, their needs bring them together. What they do with those desires, those temptation, those choices, will inevitably decide their end.

EDIT: PDF format a no go. Was just getting sent back to me.

Ok, mini rant. I want to enter the competition (and will do) but also want to read Asunder before I submit my story. I was intending to get it on e-reader. Because that makes sense, right? No postage and all that (I live in Australia)

Kindle has it region locked. Why on EARTH does that make ANY kind of logical sense???

I submitted my story Out of the Blue.  It was actually a story I wrote a while ago as part of the backstory for my "canon" Warden, an Andrastian elf mage.

Abstract:  A dying, lyrium-addled templar receives an unexpected visitor from his past, and an old debt of kindness repaid.

A couple of questions before I consider risking my minor amatuer abilities being read and possibly scorned by the pro himself.

"Entries must be an original, unpublished work of fiction in the English language and no longer than 2,500 words."

Do these submissions have to be in any specific format? A notepad txt file, a PDF, or can we just copy/paste the story into the email with "This is my entry" at the top?

I too am a bit confused about this. I have my entry in the form of a Word document right now. Is that acceptable, or should it be something else?

Unpublished...does posted on a blog count?

Not sure about the contest, but in traditional publishing, making it available on a blog is first print e-rights. Meaning, yes.

Are you trying to email it as a PDF? I emailed mine as a PDF and kept getting it back. I switched to another format and got that one back too. I ended up just emailing the thing in the actual email, with no attachments.

Are we to use original characters only for this, or is the use of canon characters allowed?

Hi Chris. For clarification, are you referring to first person narrative? Does the narrator have to be the Mage or the Templar?

Hmm, no clue what that might be. I've sent a wee PM to Chris to see if he cant clear up some of the questions regarding attachments. You might want to send him one yourself, if theres still a problem sending your email (I had no trouble with sending it to community@bioware.com )

2nd this.  I prefer writing in third person narrative, so clarification on this would help.

Finally! :D Writing contest! Thank you, Bioware (and extra awesome for having finalists judged by one of your writers!) :)

write a short story from the perspective of a Mage or Templar.

Guys, you can easily write from a character's perspective in third person. Just stay with what the one (main) character thinks, sees and feels, rather than jumping in between heads. Avoid telling the reader what other characters are thinking other than your mage/templar, and don't have the 'camera' follow them out of the room if your main character doesn't. :)

(Or break these rules, but do it cleverly. ;))

Please do not include explicit sexual descriptions or excessive violence. Writing will be judged on originality, understanding of & respect for the Intellectual Property, writing quality, grammar & spelling, and keeping within the parameters established in the Dragon Age Universe. The last day we are accepting entries is January 10th, 2012!

This is a gr8 idea and I am very excited. Dołączona grafika

I am guessing excessive language should also be excluded. (my mage has a foul mouth)

Please clarify what you mean by "respect for the Intellectual Property" since all of Dragon Age and characters are; are you referring to "other people's work" eg Ezio of Assassin's Creed who is not a character of Bioware's ?
