It would be interesting if it turned out that the stories written by the runner ups had their works made into codex entries, companion mentions, or significant elements of a companions background for the next game. The overall winner could also have their story made into a side quest line. Not saying it'll happen, but I think that would be a cool surprise.

I actually have written Codex entries for stuff in my fanfics.

Anyone else get well into a false start before starting over with an entirely different story?

Oh Maker, yes.  I had the entire family history worked out for the triplets who went on to become the Mages' Collective Liaisons (delivered by Malcolm Hawke as he and Leandra were fleeing south), where they were apprenticed, etc., and then saw in the toolset that they're not mages. But I didn't find that out until I was well into The Bag Men.  And that's about the third rewrite of that, after I'd scrapped the one that was "oh hai let me infodump the backstory I made."

So then I took the conundrum that the liaison was supposed to wrestle and gave it to Moira, the blood mage the Warden can spare in "Broken Circle."  (Her name is in the toolset.)  She's working as a runner for the Collective, realizes she's transporting the scrolls of Banastor, and has to decide what to do about that.  I never liked the title A Grave Responsibility and I ended up not being sure of the story - it hits good themes, but there's just 700 words of internal monologue that dragged.  And Moira had no personality.

So then... how about wacky adventures with Finn looking for the Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness (in the Black Emporium DLC)?  I got as far as Cullen preventing Meredith from locking him in the Gallows when it fell apart, because I thought, hey, he could run into that other Circle Tower mage, Evelina!  The one who... oh right, that was... pretty grim.  OK, I could write a grim story!  Um... eh.... didn't work.

Tossed it all and sent Warden Mahariel after Merrill, re: the Sabrae.  Short, not a lot of nuance, but it hummed, so I went with that.

Hmm ... I didn't necessarily have a false start, but I did stop after the first couple paragraphs for days and days.  Then Jan 5th passed, and I actually thought the contest ended on the 5th, so I thought, oh well.  But then I realized it ended the 10th! (right?)  So I opened up the file again and persevered.  I thought this was a wonderful opportunity, and I'm tired of shortchanging myself when it comes to such opportunities, both as a writer-hopeful and in my professional life.
So I finished the darned thing!  And I feel proud of myself for that. :D

There are no abominations ... no darkspawn, no epic battles lol It's more introspective.  Probably boring!  But I felt good about it and happy I pushed myself to finish, and finish well (meaning, not just slapping something together and sending it off "just to enter," you know?)

Mine was completely void of any "action" as well, though there is implied violence both before and after the story. Hell, I only had like, four lines of dialogue even, and only 1.5 of those were spoken (1 spoken in the real world, and the "1/2" line is one spoken in the Fade).

That definitely has mine beat!   There was a fair bit of dialogue, but my boy is pretty monosyllabic.  Hopefully, he didn't come off too much as your typical emo elf boy xD  Hard not to be emo as an elf in this world, though!

It's interesting to read about everyone's stories (a lot of ideas in here sound really cool) and their writing process. My story was heavy on the action, as it was centered around a mage's escape from the Gallows during the battle in Kirkwall at the end of DA2. He wasn't alone, so there was a lot of dialogue too.

Hopefully, they'll give us an idea of when we can expect some results. It would make the wait easier.

Yeah I'm hoping the top five are posted so we can read them, because some of the summaries have been interesting.

I wrote about Uldred's takeover of Kinloch Hold and his subsequent possession. Basically what happened just before you arrive at the Circle Tower in DA:O.

I had a huge pause in the middle - a fight scene, involving two mages.

I rarely play a caster and so I had little experience to draw from, I tried googling mage battles to no avail - SKYRIM videos were the funniest - all of them were of glowing hands floating through the universe inflicting mass damage.

RE: Waiting on results - I hated waiting for the Tallis comp - Im not so anxious this time round.

Im also expecting a long wait Posted Image

I have a few mage playthroughs, so I checked back with DA2 to make sure I had a good mental image of the spells for my descriptions, but most importantly, I wanted to get a good look at the battlefield again. To make sure that nothing I wrote would contradict other people's playthroughs (because I've only done the pro-mage ending, myself), I watched youtube videos of the alternate ending.

We have gathered here together to lay this humble soul to rest. The time we spent together cannot be erased and our memories will always keep AndreastesGrace with us. :P

No, seriously. I guess it will take a month or so. The question is, if they announce the first five winners, and then a week later the choosen winner by David Gaider, or if they do everything together.

Part of me thinks it'd be really cool if they announced the first five winners and then The Chosen One, but that would REALLY make the suspense a killer.

Unless the winner agrees to get absolutely nothing out of it, this would be fraught with legal dangers. Including the possibility of being sued. :P

A large reason, I think, why many published authors don't acknowledge reading fan fiction based on their own IP.

I assume that the writers would presume that they aren't getting anything since the work's inclusion in the game would be prize enough in this situation, but I do unerstand where you're coming from.

My story was third person subjective... I don't think there's a right or wrong voice in which to write a story, just depends on the use you make of it. It was a about a Harrowing held in Kinloch Hold in about the time in which "Asunder" is set. Unlike in the rest of the Chantrian world because of the Blight, in Ferelden Mages and Templars are working co-operatively, insofar as they can. I started writing it from the mages POV and then, because that was way too complex for the word count, changed it to the POV of a young Templar (in the main). Harrowings are still felt necessary but mages have more of a say, the mage to be harrowed for example is advised that his harrowing is imminent if not of the exact day.

I wrote two complete stories (one templar story and one mage story) and then spent a whole day trying to decide which one to submit. I should really do something with the other one, post it somewhere I suppose. I joined the community just to take part in this competition though so I'm not really sure if anyone would want to read it or where I'd put it or anything... heh.

Oddly enough, I didn't get into a false start. Usually when I'm writing I do, frequently, and I usually start again and make something which is much better and only vaguely influenced by the first idea.

The character I wrote this about, however, was a character I've been working on with the Origins toolset for a while and just don't quite have the nous to actually turn into an actual mod. I was very happy to turn him into a short story for the purpose of this competition.

Of course, I also turned him into a woman. Across the game of Origins, I think he would have become a really vulnerable character. But, in short story mode, with so little time for development, I gave him a sex change in order to make him appear more vulnerable in a short space of time.

(Does that sounds as horrendously sexist to you as it does to me? I'm ashamed of myself. Nonetheless, I think it worked heaps better. And I made a lot of things happen to "her" at Ostagar rather than just a meeting.)

It does, actually lol I blinked for a second, but I realize there's a lot of sexism out there, and definitely on this forum, too.  Surely you don't mean physically or mentally vulnerable.  In what way did you mean she is more vulnerable than a male version of herself?  If she is essentially the same person, how does the gender swap change her so fundamentally?  I can only think that circumstances in the narrative must have changed.  But then, even if, for example, she is sexually assaulted as a woman (and thus made "vulnerable") that doesn't mean that as a man he'd be anymore capable of both fending off those attacks or recovering from that.

I hope the winners post their stories. =) I know I need to learn a lot as far as writing goes, and this sounds like a great opportunity.
