Thank you, these will help me through the work day tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. Sweet!

Edit: and please include my short story in the compilation!

Added. :)

Edit: I'm running a test conversion to mobi & epub today, to see how formatting works, and if and how I should include a ToC for the final file. I want to wait until at least the Final Five (wow, haven't used that phrase capitalized since season three of Galactica!) are revealed so I can ask their authors to let me include them as well, if they aren't already, but I want to be able to have it ready to go immediately when they are!

Edit 2: Wow, these test files are coming out ugly. Nothing is working with calibre to convert to any format, and while mobipocket is successfully creating the files I need, it's screwing up the formatting and style on almost every test file I make. Maybe I'll just do a pretty little PDF... I know how to actually make the ToC work in those, plus I know Kindle, at least, can read them. Just need to make sure Nook can, too. >.>

Adobe Indesign has the ability to make epubs, though I've never tried that. It can make pdfs too. Try that maybe? Unless you don't have the program... meh I'm rambling. I'll offer my indesign skills to you if worst comes to worst. Just need to figure out the epub thing.

And you know, I have CS4 Master collection and I never thought to look at that. I'll see if it can do the conversion to at least one of the versions I need; It drives me crazy that I can get the PDF formatted exactly how I have my original files, but conversion from .doc or PDF to mobi/epub messes everything up. Maybe InDesign can fix it somehow. :/

I'm a *TeX for lyfe kind of person, but then again, I'm kinda strange.

That doesn't really help for epub/mobi, though :/

Talking about main character's descriptions, I didn't describe my main character Evaine until she finally met up with her twin sister Candra. At that point, I did detail appearance to show how identical they actually were - a mirror image, except for a few notable differences.

In personal writing, I'm a huge advocate for describing characters, but only because I want them to be unique. I hate when a story has a bunch of gorgeous people; I want my characters to have flaws, to not necessarily be the hottest thing around town, because it makes them more realistic.

While we are waiting on the announcement I have been enjoying a lot of the stories. I wonder if any of you have visualized your characters in your stories. I have a habit of making storyboards in the toolset when I write my DA stories. Thought I might share what my story's character looks like, and I am curious what some of the other characters look like.

I had images of what the two main characters looked like, but barely described them. In part this was due to working within the word count and lengthy descriptions would break the flow of the story, but it was also somewhat deliberate for the antagonist. I wanted the reader to have a preconceived idea of what he was before he became visible, so it was in my favour to depict him with few words.

Afterwards it made sense for a slightly longer description, as the characters had once worked together and were now sizing each other up as potential enemies after years of following their own paths.

In general I don't go overboard with describing characters. I mainly keep it to basic colouring and height/shape, what they're wearing/wielding if appropriate, and distinctive features if applicable. I leave the flowery 'eyes the colour of exquisite sapphires, as viewed in the depths of Winter's sunlit snows" to other people. Or when I'm writing comedy. :3

I can describe what some of the characters in my story look like(as well as other personal details) if anyone cares.

Iris: I guess about 18 or so years old, 5'4", slim figure, long dark hair that she ties in a DA equivalent to a French braid. She has blue eyes.

As my story goes. Iris is the daughter of a man named Harold, who was killed by the rookie Templar Erran ten years before Iris' Harrowing. Iris watched her father be impaled through the heart and she was dragged kicking and screaming to the Circle. Her mother did nothing except watch the ordeal in terror and Iris hasn't heard from her since. Iris proved to be a prodigy in magic, especially healing abilities. She was taken as a personal pupil by Enchanter Gilroy. And Iris' story begins one year after the Blight ended.

Nolan: I'd say about 23-25 years old, about 6'1", muscular physique, dimpled cheeks, very descriptive brown eyes, black hair(I guess about the length of the hair in my avatar,) he's also got a small beard and some stubble.

Nolan was the son of a Templar named Cuan, who was a good friend of Knight-Commander Greagoir until he was killed battling an abomination. Instead of going into an orphanage, Greagoir took Nolan in and allowed him to become a recruit at a young age, and looked after him. Nolan wasn't in the Circle Tower during Uldred's BS and didn't get back till after. Nolan is a lot like his father, he feels sympathy for the mages and does his best to do his job without resorting to violence. It's something he and Greagoir disagree about, since Greg believes softness to be the reason that Cuan died.
As for his relationship with Iris, they met after the Blight and started seeing each other privately. His kinder attitude appealed to Iris since it's a complete contrast to her normal experiences with Templars. And before Iris even took her Harrowing, he was already planning to propose and help her escape. And took steps, like replacing her phylactery with a vial of animal blood(I actually have a funny side story in mind where random Templars follow the phylactery and find a couple of Mabari mating.)
I originally included a scene where Iris found Nolan in a heated argument with Greagoir and listened in. Greagoir had found out about Nolan's affair with Iris and was hassling him over it. But it had to go. Long story short though, Greagoir thinks she's unstable because of her trauma and would be easy prey for a demon, but at Irving and Gilroy's insistence, she's being allowed to take the Harrowing rather than being forced into tranquility.

Gilroy: He's in his mid thirties, about 5'7", has a lean figure, he's also got a very pale complexion, white hair(about neck length, parted at the middle) and little color in his eyes(he's got achromia). I would also imagine him wearing a hooded robe since he doesn't like bright lights.

He's from a Circle of Magi in Antiva, but was sent to Ferelden at some point and one of the things his research is for is to cure his condition. I imagine him as something of a scientist as well as a mage. He feels that understanding people's anatomy and physiology better would allow healing magic to be more effective. I was originally going to give him a bigger role and make him achieve his goal through blood magic, but that had to go due to the word limit. He also learned shape-shifting(something he keeps to himself) from a Dalish keeper who was briefly trapped in the Circle in Antiva(eventually escaped).

Erran: I would imagine him as being generally average in many aspects. I haven't given him a lot of thought.

He was new to the Order and was at the local Chantry when word got to him about Iris' magic. He went to her house and tried to be calm and official. But when Iris' father, Harold, pulled a sword and tried to attack, but Erran blocked his attack and killed him in a moment of panic. Then forcibly brought Iris to the Circle. Iris hates him for it and he knows it, but Erran has lived with a deep regret over the way that night went down. He's never managed to muster up the nerve to talk to her about it though.
I was originally going to give Erran an older, Alrik-like partner named James. But as part of the constraints, he had to go.

Francois: Iris' best friend and a transfer from one of the Circles in Orlais. She's a more sexy type of girl, nice figure, lots of makeup, curly blonde hair, green eyes, and a notable Orlesian accent.

Angela: An elven girl whose only been in the Circle for about three or so years. She's the little sister-esque member of the group. Iris and Francois try to teach her things and be role models. Her name was originally Amanda, but I decided to change it.

Harold: I suppose he'd be middle aged, balding, a little overweight. Brown hair and eyes. The son of a soldier who works as a carpenter. Also a doting daddy and a loving husband. Originally, he was supposed to have an argument with Iris' mother while Erran was banging on the door. Her mother was encouraging him to let the Templars take Iris, but Harold mentions that he had three sisters who were all mages, and all of them died under questionable circumstances. James, the Templar I expunged from the story, was supposed to be the one who took all of his sisters.

Iris' mother: I don't even remember the name I had picked out for her. She was supposed to have more dialogue but was severely back burned due to lack of relevance. I would imagine that Iris gets her looks and characteristics from her, though. Also a relatively firm Andrastian, but she didn't try to talk Harold down out of a hate for magic, but because she wanted to avoid anyone being killed.

My preferred choice of continuity for this story(not dependent on it though, if choices that would hinder the events from taking place, they simply happen differently to fit) is to take place in a Ferelden where a female Amell Warden had made the Ultimate Sacrifice and been in love with Alistair, who was married off to Anora. And who had made relatively moralistic choices(destroying the anvil, ending the curse, saving the mages, electing Bhelen would be the gray area choice.)

As for what Iris and Nolan do after their escape. Let's just say I've got something big and juicy in mind. :P

Now that makes me feel better about Genitivi likening the Tranquil to tables. ;) There needs to be a DA character who writes codex diary entires like that!

Mercutio Meresti pursed his lips and furrowed his brow.

His feeble peasant mind began a panicked search through his slim vocabulary in an attempt to describe himself, and the effort made the rest of his body go limp.

He decided to look at his hands, turning them over to see them front and back.

I'm... brown-y and... pink... ish?

Mercutio frowned. He doesn't know a lot of words. He doesn't even know what color his hair is. After a several frustrating seconds of trying to make his eyes move past his peripheral vision, he grabbed his bangs with both hands and pulled them into view.

Ow.

A dark blur. His hair is black. It leaves a greasy residue on his hands, which he wipes off on his tan sack shirt. Perhaps he should wash his hair instead of pulling at it?

Mercutio Meresti recoils in disgust.

Maker, no! Then it will get wet.

They haven't told us anything yet, unfortunately. I wish they would give us some idea if it's going to be days, weeks, or more.

I found myself doing more character description that I thought I would but then it was somewhat necessary for the story, A Harrowing, especially since the protagonists seem to develop a liking for each other. But then there's also the hard-bitten older Templar, the motherly practical one and the wily Dalish shape shifting enchanter (is this character becoming a stereotype? I've seen it in several stories apart from my own)... So...

That's a good point. (I'm always looking for excuses to get descriptive.)

I could describe my husband in vivid detail. (Not that anyone would care about his suspicious looking moles that I keep telling him to go to the skin cancer clinic about.) And I would have been able to describe him early in our relationship. But I struggle to recall mundane details about other people.

I hope they announce the top five as well as the overall winner. As much as I'd love to win, I'd be absolutely thrilled to just be on the shortlist.

Edit: Just reread the initial post and the top five winners get autographed copies of the book, so I'm guessing they will list them all at some point.

Maybe they already have. Maybe the Final Five contestants have already gotten e-mails telling them they've won, but they were asked not to say anything until the grand prize winner was chosen.
