I'm not an expert on copyright laws or anything, but I think just writing a story set in the Dragon Age universe is infringement. Obviously they're giving you some permission to do so with the contest--the question is just "how much".DreGregoire wrote...
Well the requirement is to write a short story as a mage or templar and Anders is the intellectual property of Bioware so to write as Anders, in this instance (I believe) would be considered infringment. But a much more clear example would be if you wrote as Rhys.
This isn't about the law it's about the requirements necessary to meet the submission criteria.

Sorry to sound suspicious, but seems like Bioware has run out of story ideas of their own?
Maybe. Or maybe they're looking for some new blood to hire.
Hey I can dream can't I?

So, we can't write from an established character's perspective? Like Shale's? It has to be a created character?
Would you consider writing from Shale's perspective to be an original work of your own, something you created? You can't be original if you are using somebody elses intellectual property (creation by another). Shale is Bioware's intellectual property. I'm not saying anything against the norm in fanfiction writing but this Writing Challenge is very clear in its' requirements.
Would it be considered breaching intellectual property if your created character mentions characters that already exist in the DA universe but only vaguely?
Also does the story have to be written in 1st person or can it be 3rd person a main character? I'm not great at understanding the rules for the story.

I doubt it. It's just nice to get a writing comp after all the art and cosplay comps.

So, "unpublished" means it hasn't appeared anywhere before. I should have read the fine print. Oh well, my email was returned anyway.Maria Caliban wrote...
Not sure about the contest, but in traditional publishing, making it available on a blog is first print e-rights. Meaning, yes.Lady Astoreth wrote...

I doubt it. It's just nice to get a writing comp after all the art and cosplay comps. This fandom has a lot of writers and until now we've never really been asked to show our stuff (the MotA/Tallis Art/CP comp did broaden its scope after some writers expressed their disappointment on the forums, which was awesome. Most of us had given up on fan writing being given any attention by that point).
What she said ! LOL

Seriously?!?!
I think SOLD & DreGreg answered my question about intellectual property sufficiently - thanks.
Still hopin a Dev sets it in stone though - hate to be disqualified over a technicality.
I was thinking that you have to use your own Mage/Templar but within the Dragon Age Universe and mixing with DA characters is fine... as well as treating those creations with respect.

Edit: Don't get me wrong. I write fanfiction. I infringe some of the time in an effort to make the story have a stronger stamp of me, but I'm not going to deny that I infringe just because I treat Duncan in a manner I feel matches his nature (you know respecting his character).
This Challenge's requirements say no to it, so that's what I'll aim for.

I'm really tired and this may sound more like an argument than anything else but I'm not sure what you are getting at when you all equate respect with intellectual property infringing. This "just treat them with respect" but use them anyways still seems like you are infringing on the intellectual property. Probably just me though.Nunight all.
Erm, ... intellectual property infringement is you use said characters and do not give credit as is due. Even worse, if you'd claim ownership over those characters, which is outright intellectual property theft/plagiarism.
So whatever you do, just add the disclaimer "The Dragon Age setting is owned by BioWare, Division of EA and not me. Any recurring characters from said franchise belong to BioWare, Division of EA and are not of my work".
Problem solved ... why all the fuss about that?

In a regular fanfic I would happily use any of the existing DA characters, but I would try to keep them in character because I believe that shows respect for the IP.
BUT, it's also pretty well established that some writers, such as David Gaider, don't like other writers taking control of their characters.
Thus, unless clarification is forthcoming, I think the safe way to approach the rules for this competition is to not write about NPCs who already exist in the DA universe, or at least not in any great detail. You have the entire DA world to play with, after all. Writing something with original characters, or characters inspired by a DA item description or Codex entry shouldn't be hard...it just takes a little more creativity than writing about, for instance, Anders, Morrigan, or Templar!Alistair.
But we'll see if any more info is forthcoming...

I guess like in DA2 - the DAO story is somewhere in the background and is brought up in fleeting conversation but its a whole new story. Nothing to do with Blight or AD's but a whole different story.
My point with respect and not using DA Characters is my mage could wave to Cullen, maybe say hello but not walk up to him and rape him (non-explictly).
I was confused because when I entered the Tallis competition I used Tallis & DA2Zevran.
That would most likely be considered not respecting intellectual property - however that competition required it.
Made worse by the fact Tallis assassinated him - by the order of the real Zevran(DAOZev)

This competition makes it sound like they're interested in seeing what we do with DA lore, especially WRT mages and templars. One of the judging points is knowledge of the world and how it's meant to work. It looks like they're after our insight and awareness of mage/templar stuff, and how well we integrate that into a compelling tale. A story about Mage!Hawke giving Anders a kitten probably won't win, even though it has mages and kittens.

I guess this is what they mean - a totally original Mage/Templar story.
It will be judged on originality - so even if some infringement IS allowed it may be better to be heavy on the ORGINALITY

Seriously though, this is why I really REALLY want to read Asunder before I finalise my story. Because knowledge of the world is key here, and if I can't read it I don't know all the lore that DG has put into it...

The original post doesn't use the term "infringement", but "understanding of and respect for" the intellectual property. Until we get clarification from the devs, I don't think any of us can categorically state what constitutes understanding and respecting the intellectual property of Dragon Age.

Indeed. Art comps/Cosplay are easy to enter if you have a few reference pics provided. You don't need to play the game or read any books, you 'just' need talent. But a writing comp such as this you need both talent and a fair degree lore-savviness. I don't think you need Asunder to create something good, but naturally the book will contain extra lore the games currently don't, so reading it is more of an advantage than a necessity IMO.
Unless you're writing something based in Val Royeaux, or the White Spire...then you're probably screwed unless you get the book.

The world is shrouded in death, and madness why do we endure?
Why can't The Maker not grant all of them clarity.
To stop the blood shed, to stop the foolish waste of life?
At this rate it is no blight that will end us all, but our own pride.
Every day I grow in power, but it brings me no joy.
Every time I kill another Templar, I lose the ability to feel.
Are they not son's and daughter's My Maker?
Did they forsake you, by taking up this unholy cause?
Do you punish the wicked now ?
Or do you test, the true of heart to see if we can survive?
"She is upon my lair"......."no!"

Ahh, better yet: a loose second person!
Chapter 1: You are a Mage. You are oppressed killed by Templars.
Chapter 2: You are a Templar. You are tortured and killed by a Mage uprising.
Good stuff.

For the brief you want a synopsis or a brief snippet from the story? Just for clarification purposes. Thanks.
Something that you feels represents your story. A synopsis is good, but a small section may also work. Up to you.
Thanks Chris. Sent mine to you as a word document.
And I choose...a snippet...a glimpse into a character I created for my blog story Jacen Thorne. This character is Reginald Malore, a Templar from Kirkwall...and for this challenge I wrote a prequal short as sort of a backstory before he is introduced in the Jacen Thorne main story. I hope you enjoy...from The Assignment
A decade before while hunting a particularly nasty maleficar, Reginald Molare suffered an accident leaving his vision permanently altered. When he was in bright light the man was completely blind, but in low light and total darkness he could see shapes. A side effect from the blood mage’s attack turned his formally green eyes a silvery color that glowed in the light much like a cat’s. Even the Knight Commander and First Enchanter found Reginald’s eyes an eerie sight. Not one person could tell him why his vision had been altered, but his ability as a tracker had not been diminished.
