If this is over we can open a thread called (for example)  "Writer's Corner". Maybe the ones you have met here will write there as well and we can continue our discussion about what we did how to achieve what, sans the anxiety and nervousness. :)

That's a good idea. Exchange ideas, ask questions and opinions. I know I wasn't active here, but I was always here and  it was nice to meet some fellow writers :)

I second that. I'm not active here myself, but I do like the idea of a "Writers Coner"

Yes! I always wanted to talk with others about their work and what they do to convey more feeling or even less or if they even think about reducing an emotional feeling when writing certain parts and how others use stylistic devices to achieve what. We can give each other hints or maybe even have some kind of "workouts".

We did that in our literature class. We had two sentences and had to think about how we could change them just by using our voice to convey three different feelings. Maybe we can apply that to writing scenes?

Or maybe we have a rough sketch and have to fill it with many, many flowery metaphors. :D

(Since I don't use metaphors very often it would be really difficult and challenging for me. Even more so in English...)

(If I'm a little over the top, just tell me...)

We used to do that in creative writing classes. It is, indeed, a very good practice.
I am Portuguese and I find it easier to write in English than in my own language. The writing flows naturally and I end up metaphoring in Portuguese. I hate it.

It forces you out of your own writing style and makes you take a different approach. I think that's good pratice as well.

I wrote one fanfiction I used more for pratice and in all of the 24 chapters I used a different style, POV and/or emotion. I didn't always work well but I learned a lot. I did the same with an English fanfiction I wrote (South Park :P).

Though I am much more better in German. I lack a lot of vocabulary and don't always understand every nuance of a word in English. In German I know: If I use this word it's more negative or positive or tends more to express that as well and so on. Which was why competing in this challenge was really difficult for me, since I tried to explain why someone acted the way she did but with my lack of expressiv words, I think I failed.

However, in English it's easy to express something since the English vocabulary tends to have more words for a definite meaning. Like the word "smirk" or "sneer". I see the words I know exactly what that person's face looks like. In German you have to explain that in a roundabout way, which sometimes make sentences awkward or very, very long.

Yes, that's it. Sometimes our languages lack specific words, well English might too. One good example is the word "Saudade" that means to miss someone, you have the meaning but not the words. And most of the time I end up thinking in English. I loved writing in this tone, a bit somber, dark and gloomy and I have no idea how to tackle it in Portuguese - haven't tried it, tough.
All in all, I loved my choice of vocabulary and the flow but I think I rushed the plot towards the end, maybe because the word limit or maybe I was eager to deal the final blow, I dunno, I didn't like the outcome.

Speaking of POV for training, in one class, a girl picked the POV of a security camera, that was very good!

Sign me up, captain!

Maybe we could even set eachother little writing challenges, then it'd be like taking part in this competition only without David Gaider making us all so nervous.

Yes, when I write English I sometimes wish I could use this German word and when I write in German I sometimes wish I could use an English word.

Actually, when I considered myself finished my entrie had ~900 words. But there was something lacking, the final blow, the certain "Ah!"-effect. So I re-considered and played around a lot and in the end reached ~2000 words. So I had no problem with the word limit at all.

Oh! A security camera is interesting. I once wrote from the POV of a tree. And I once read from the POV of a park bench. Next time I try the POV of a Dark Spawn. ^_^

I never really came to these boards much before the contest, but I'd be interested in a Writer's Corner thread to keep discussing writing on a regular basis once this is over.  For those on fanfiction.net, I also run the Dragon Age Writer's Corner forum: forum.fanfiction.net/forum/Dragon_Age_Writers_Corner/95729/  We have hints, tips, challenges, and the like :)

Looking forward to the worst Monday EVAR... Posted ImagePosted Image

Speaking of writing challenges, I have a tool some of you might be interested in.

http://www.scattered.../DAPrompts.html

The Dragon Age Random Prompt Generator (the work of Cherith on Tumblr, and her husband) coughs up two characters and a keyword/phrase to work on. It can be as shippy or non-shippy as you want, and the combinations can get quite...interesting ( Ketojan/Rage Demon/magical girl AU, anyone?). I like to use it to get the brain rolling. Hopefully someone else gets a kick out of it too! :D

Those words do not belong together xD

I could be playing on this for a while now....

I just had Ser Jory/Orana; card game. Now how am I going to do that?

I guess I will play around a little more. Thank you for that link! Favo!

I just had the most worst laughing fit EVER:

Meredith / Weylon; distance makes the heart grow fonder

(Yes, "most worst"!)

You know what? Be it a fanfiction or a full blown epic fantasy novel, I suck at picking names.
One name in my entry was the nick name of a Steam user, da hell! I clearly need to play with words like Tolkien or use a name generator.
Regarding the rest, I have plenty of imagination.

Thanks for all the link :)

Loghain/Duncan on a sinking ship? My brain just ran away screaming. Thanks for this, Hakurou! Posted Image

Yes, yes! If it's something not playing in this day and age I suck big time too!

I just noticed that I called my Templars Ser Lory and Ser Darian.

Guyn, Egret and Jofrar, well, those weren't bad.

Guyn and Jofrar are young apprentices and Egret is a *spoiler* blood mage who is incognito in a circle DUN DUN DUN!

Another reminder you can read some of the submissions here while you wait, or submit your own if you wish. ;)

Edit: Also, while we're writing stuff about writing, was pointed toward a good article about putting fighting in fiction here. Not really about how to write it, but things to consider in making it feel real.

Haha, time delay. It's lunch time in Germany right now. I expect them to announce the results when I am sleeping, so I'm not that nervous.

Try coming up with names, after establishing the character a bit, be it in your head or on paper, via placeholders. We, at least subconsciously, associate certain traits or social standings with the sound of certain names. And after you have a good grasp on what the character does, it's much easier to determine if they look like they're a peasant called Bob or a noble called Raphael.
(Which initself demonstrates my point - we're prone to associate shorter, more common names with more down to earth characters, where we expect nobility to have more refined or exotic names)

That is a good tip, thank you. But I don't always write fantasy, sometimes I write some Murakami-ish novels and I have to come up with names. Sometimes the characters are real people I know and I don't want them to think: hei, that's me!
If my friend Ana is in the story I change it to Andreia or Anabela, something similar :)

Writers Corner is a great community.  And there's also Writer Lounge forum here in DAO Community Creations :)
