Speaking of writing challenges, I have a tool some of you might be interested in.

http://www.scattered.../DAPrompts.html

The Dragon Age Random Prompt Generator (the work of Cherith on Tumblr, and her husband) coughs up two characters and a keyword/phrase to work on. It can be as shippy or non-shippy as you want, and the combinations can get quite...interesting ( Ketojan/Rage Demon/magical girl AU, anyone?). I like to use it to get the brain rolling. Hopefully someone else gets a kick out of it too! :D

Justice/Anders and "the taste of your mouth"

I think I might have read that one already somewhere on ff.net...  :pinched:

Edit: Sebastian Vael/ Varric Tethras and "once more, with feeling"
OMG someone please write this nao!

Edit 2: Desire Demon/Bann Teagan Guerrin and "drunken shenanigins"

ALLLLL IN! Me too, I want to read that, too.

Though it might be more fun to write that actually.

I'd be all for community-driven challenges. I was on another (non-gaming) writers' site (eHarlequin.com) where we did that. The challenges ran bi-weekly, in a forum, with each challenge being a new thread. The person who won the challenge the previous week would get to name the new challenge topic/premise/theme and be the judge. The entries were available for everyone to read. Most of the time, the results were fair (it was just bragging rights and the ability to judge and dictate the next challenge, no prizes), but there were times when people would just vote for their friends no matter the quality of the entry (which is why I stopped entering). From what I've been reading here, I think people here have more integrity and actual interest in the craft than that.

Anders/Merrill and "dance lessons" could be funny, too. I have a feeling that would turn out completely wtf, lol. Also, anything with Bann Perrin and "pants" including "pants down", "under that armor", etc.

Edit: Carver/Jethann and "say uncle"

Technically it's not me, it's this prompt generator. That said:

Branka/Shale and "the crush of rejection" - this could actually be something good and serious re: the Anvil
Sandal/Gamlen and "rescue mission" - because I can see both Gamlen being begrudgingly forced into being a good person, AND I can see Sandal using not-enchantment in some sort of rescue, of or alongside Gamlen (even if no one realized Sandal was there)
anyone/anyone and "internet meme"
Meredith/Isabela and "mistaken identity"
Rage Demon/Mistress Woolsey and "manhandle" - cause you know that old woman could!
Jethann/Isabela and "Questioning Beliefs"
Warden/Marjolaine and "puppet strings" - another I think could turn out a good, serious story

Then again...

Eamon/Oghren and "too close for comfort" - presented w/o comment

Edit: Andraste and anyone with the "alien invasion" prompt:

My predetermined reactions to winning/placing vs. losing:

Winning/Placing: *stares dumbfounded at computer screen for half an hour mumbling unintelligibly*

Losing: *shakes head* "I was a fanfic author once, then I took an arrow in the knee..."

Sounds about right. Then again, while I'd rather not wait, maybe they should announce things tomorrow to honor the idea of bad things (for the "losers") happening on Tuesdays...

He never should have asked the dwarf to get involved.

"Varric," Sebastian said through his teeth, "this is a liturgical drama, not a tawdry dockside show."

"Of course it is," Varric replied breezily.  "Everyone's entirely on-board with that.  You got me to take out the chase scene and the fireballs, didn't you?"

"I thought we had agreed to cast Hawke as Andraste."

"Well, see, there's a problem with that, seeing as the Champion is also the most famous apostate in Kirkwall.  People might take that the wrong way."  Varric shrugged, as if confounded by the darn unreasonableness of those people.  "Andraste the mage?  That's some heresy there."

"But..."

"And Andraste was a great war-leader, right?  She'd know her way around a blade."

"Varric --"  The sudden appearance of a white-clad figure, at the top of the Chantry's stairs, head bowed and hands clasped in prayer, interrupted Sebastian, .

It honestly took Sebastian a moment to recognize Isabela.  Her signature gaudy jewelry was gone; her hair was tucked into a neat queue behind her head, and she was covered neck to toe in flowing white robes.  Deliberately, she lifted her head from her attitude of prayer and intoned, "Magic was meant to serve man, not to rule over him."

Sebastian gaped. Varric nudged him.  "See?"

"And so I decree," Isabela continued, voice raising, eyes lifting skyward, "that all mages shall learn the electricity trick and use it frequently!"

"Damn it, Rivaini!"

:D  Glad you liked it!  The thought process went something like:

Buffy episode had singing... singing, like a musical... Sebastian, Chantry... medieval liturgical drama with music and acting... which Varric would try to tart up.

So it kicked off with the Buffy, then went... elsewhere.  :)

Another reminder you can read some of the submissions here while you wait, or submit your own if you wish. ;)

Edit: Also, while we're writing stuff about writing, was pointed toward a good article about putting fighting in fiction here. Not really about how to write it, but things to consider in making it feel real.

This link was helpful! Thanks!

She's one of the workers at the Blooming Rose, and she appears as Seneschal Bran's escort at Duke Prosper's party in MotA.  She's voiced by a man; I believe I've seen a writer (Kirby?) refer to her as transgendered (rather than, say, a dude in drag).

There was a bug in MotA where, no matter what, Tallis will refer to the couple as "Awkward..." and Hawke will change the subject.  Kirby reported that the line was supposed to fire only if Hawke had spent time with Seredipity at the Rose; she'll make it clear that she's spent time with Hawke in that case, which is indeed a trifle awkward.  But otherwise, it sort of comes out of nowhere, which made folks think the pairing was just being played for laughs.

Haha, Serendipity is Bran's... companion... in MotA.

Edit: *laughs* I never spent too much time in the Rose, so I never saw her there. Was too busy either swooning over Anders, or being painfully chaste and swooning over Sebastian.

Ah, that's her!

Oho I wonder what she was called in German, I can't remember. But I laughed so hard when I heard her. And I was: man? women? voice? transgender in DA2? Most EPIC! Thanks for explaining. :kissing:

I never saw her in the blooming rose. Didn't spent much time there either.

That's the "challenge" part though. The easy way out is to go with the obvious smut implied by the prompt. It's more fun IMHO to take the prompt and make something completely unexpected out of it :)
