I only romanced him in case he spills extra lore if you get him in the sack. :P

The things I do for story. ;)

That's the only reason I romanced Anders eventhough I know what would happen to my poor Hawke. :crying:

Speaking of Qunmance, someone we know is referencing ImportedBeer in one of their latest book plugs. Kabethari has some fortitude, I'll admit that much.

Link! Link! Liii~ink! Please.

Oh, are we distracting ourselves with romance stories? I've only done one playthrough so far, and courted Merrill. Fenris is for the next run. I like Anders well enough, but I don't feel the call of the Must Be Romanced.

We are desperate. We apparently write porn to distract ourselves.

The Fenris wall-thing sort of bothers me, honestly, because it looks like he does it as a simple reaction to being touched. Hawke grabs his hand, and the response is to throw him/her into a wall? *Then* it goes to hot kissy-kissy, but that initial throw does not sit well with me.

Well, considering that he seems allergic to touching, I'm not suprised. He doesn't have much body contact outside of fighting and if it's from someone he likes, I don't know.

To be blunt, I like that throw against the wall, but I think everybody interprets his way of action differently... He doesn't know what he wants, he is confused and he denied himself feelings. That's at least how I see it. It's more a panic reaction. I'm bad at explaining...

I don't know why I am such a sucker for that elf. In real life I would kick his ass. I wouldn't even stand to be in his company for a week. It must be his voice. Totally.

Hey, we get to know the results tomorrow! :) That was a really cool poem a few pages back. I like all these comparisons to the Grey Wardens (you know, except the "those who don't make it are killed" part).

I see a lot of you guys haven't read your stories since you entered them... but I read mine a couple times. No mistakes. I made sure of that before I sent it in. Because my goal is to be a professional writer, and I do all of my own editing, I'm very used to checking my own work.

And we're talking about DA2 romances now? The only one I've done so far is Anders friendmance with a mage FemHawke, and it was awesome. Justice and Anders were my favorite characters in Awakening, and I enjoyed the way their story played out in DA2. Now he's also a well-intentioned extremist with a blue glow who's vengeful against the templars and started a mage rebellion - these are common traits among my favorite characters. (I'm starting to think that I must be BioWare's target customer. xD) Fenris friendmance with a rogue FemHawke will be my next playthrough once I finish my DAO import, who is in Awakening now. I actually like all of the romances this time around, which is unusual for me.

...Except Sebastian. I don't count him all the time because I have no DLC, so at this point, he isn't one of my options. But even if he was, I would never be able to complete his romance. My favorite characters get killed off so many times that, when it is actually in my control to prevent it, I won't let it happen.

Wow, that was some wall of text! Anyway, I'd like to add that all of my game characters (and most, if not all, of my characters in general) have more than a little bit of crazy in them, so romances like this suit them just fine. They would be simply incompatible with a normal person.

I'm with you there.  Part of my MFA was learning about the nitty gritty of the publishing world, and what to do to make your work stand out.  The two most important things were following all the agency's or publisher's instructions; and proofreading and editing like crazy.  One thing with this contest that was tough for me was that there weren't some of those same instructions, like font size/type or formatting and submission aspects.  In the end I feel like I wrote the best story I could, proofed it over and over, and then followed what directions I was given to the letter.

That said, I'm too nervous to reread my submission because I'm afraid I'll catch something I'd missed and then feel even more nerved up about tomorrow!Image IPB

Please post to the Dragon Age: Asunder Writing Competition Entries thread as I am not able to. Thanks!

Visions of Chaos

Constructive Criticism Requested
Synopsis:

Suddenly Aeron looked up into the sky and a transformation came over her face. Hilda stopped dead as she looked at her friend, aware that something had changed in her countenance, a fearful, ominous change that frightened her in a way she couldn’t describe.
“Aeron?”
“Aeron?” she repeated.
“AERON! Snap out of it!” she yelled.
Aeron’s eyes had glazed over and gone suddenly dark, her body shaking as if suddenly chilled by a great cold. When Hilda touched her Aeron’s skin felt icy as death and the air of fright that permeated from her body terrified Hilda to her very soul; something was very wrong with her friend.

I'm sorry, the contest closed a long time ago. That's why you're not able to post to the entries thread. The winner has already been chosen :(.

I'm guessing Lewsbabe2011 meant this thread, which only Shadow of Light Dragon can edit.

I think the hardest part for me was the word count. I could have easily written a longer story (specifically the ending, which needed to be paced faster than I originally intended to fit within 2500 words), but it turned out well anyway. The extra information wasn't needed to understand the scene, just something I would have liked to add in. Checking the grammar/spelling was business as normal. Actually coming up with a story and characters is the easiest, in my case. I did that in a matter of hours the first night I found out about the contest. I probably spend most of my time perfecting the sentence structure and word flow, even more so with my novel.

I was really excited and nervous about the results until today. For several nights in a row, I stayed awake late with anticipation (and probably habit too, because I ended up writing most of my contest entry at night), but I'm totally calm today. It's funny how these things work sometimes.

@Miri: It's a request to be added in the thread Shadow of Light Dragon made for the full contest entries to be posted, for anyone who wants to read them. The forum requires game registration to post, so a lot of people have been making their requests here.

I've done six playthroughs. My first was Anders because he was soo cool in Awakenings. I was dissapointed with his character in DA2 but continued to romance him anyway cause I'm stubborn like that. I'll admit that when I saw Fenris I nearly drooled. When he started spouting anti-mage things I grew little devil horns. Five of my six playthroughs have been as a mage with my LI being Fenris. Everytime I start a new game I think to myself "Ok, this is it. I'm going to romance someone else this game." Then I remember that Merrill is too naive for my taste, Sebastian is a chant of light thumper, Varric isn't an option and Isabella, while closest to my personal taste, is a bit too jolly. Fenris' character appealed to me on an intellectual and visual level. He also has exactly the type of sweet/spicy personality I love in my romances. I liked his frankness as well. Pretty much everyone else lied to me or had no spine whatsoever. After my first playthrough romancing Fenris, I actually cried when my brother reminded me he was a game character.

Has anyone here heard about the new Mass Effect novel Deception and how terrible it is? Apparently, it is so full of errors that a guy posted a video of him burning the book. This sort of thing bothers me because it could happen to Dragon Age.

I think having the head writer of the game writing the novels helps against that, it is kind of shocking though. You'd think they'd get at least one Mass Effect fan to proof read it first...

As long as Mr. Gaider is still helming all the DA novels, it should be okay! No outsourcing please =)

Gaider said something along the lines of there being a massive index of lore for DA, which may not be the case for Mass Effect, so even if they do end up outsourcing the novels, hopefully someone will CHECK if there are errors before it goes to publication.

Also I wonder if the writing team has read Neal Stephenson's new novel, Reamde? It's got a LOT about game design in it, and I couldn't help thinking of the writer's pit, especially for the first few chapters.

Could just be fan drama over the fact that it's a new author who doesn't write the same way as the old one.

Bioware fans seem to have a natural dislike to change. I wouldn't be surprised if copies of Mass Effect 3 end up getting ditched simply because they have a new guy composing the music.

"Omigosh, this music is hideous! I hate ME3 and curse Bioware forever for ruining this game for me." xD

It's not just that it is a different writer, it's that the story is to full of errors in ME lore that the fans who have read it have created a Google Doc listing all the errors.  https://docs.google....o/preview?pli=1

I know the Halo novels have different authors; but though the styles are different, the lore remains consistent throughout. I can handle/get over different writing styles, but if things become inconsistent, then that is a problem that should be looked into. My view is that tie-in books like these are meant to enrich the lore and add to canon; how can that be possible if they're error-riddled and contradict elements of canon that have already been established?

Unfortunately, it's not all fan drama. I know a lot of people on BSN complain about everything, and have hated the same books and comics that I loved, but the opinions here on Deception from people who have read the preview are mostly in agreement. It's sad that there are so many errors, and most importantly, errors about characters that could have been easily avoided with simple fact-checking (like two characters being at an age that would set the story's timeline after the Reaper invasion, and a character who hates aliens flirting with one). I'm still going to read it, but... definitely going into it with low expectations. And this is coming from someone who really enjoyed all of the previous books, comics, and generally everything related to BioWare games. I doubt this would ever be a problem when the same people who write the games also write the books though.

But there are other threads to discuss this in, remember? :)

What I was hoping for by bringing this up is the opinions of the writers about story and canon.  And if your hired to write a story do they think it is important to get the details correct or to ignore them in service to the story you want to write.  I didn't bring it up to just bash the book.  There are a lot of other venues doing that farely thoroughly.  I guess I should have been more specific.

Hey guys, I'm a bit behind here. This has probably been established, but do any of you know where and when (what time, if you please) the results are going to be posted tomorrow? x)

Dug through this thread for twenty minutes before I gave up and decided to just ask.
