I have a question... am I the only one that wrote a story with a happy ending?

All of the entries I've read have been completely tragic, one of them had me on the brink of tears (thanks Miri1984 :crying:) ... not that tragedy is a bad thing, I've loved reading every single one, but now my happy ending just seems a bit silly and naive next to all the death and demons...

Mine was tragic from the start, I wanted to write how my mage would react to a Harrowing and then I added other aspects. A friend of mine liked it so much she asked me to write a sequel and I think I can do a happy one.

I tend to prefer bittersweet endings too, both in reading and writing. Happy endings can also be done well, as long as they're not too contrived and unbelievable, I think. I'm all for the protagonists getting their best possible outcome, but I want them to have struggled and lost a lot on the way, otherwise it just seems too cheap and easy.

I totally agree. I think the kind of happy endings I most enjoy are "new beginning" kind of endings, where the character has just come through something really bad and they're battered and a shaken but they've found a future where it seemed like there was none and they're moving towards it.

In other news... I'm really going to miss this Schrödinger's cat stage of the competition where we've all both won and not won the competition. A part of me is going to be really sad when this thread is done.

Mine starts out...unhappy, so to speak, but the ending really is up to the reader. I'll post it when all this horrible waiting is over.

Generally speaking, when I start a story I have no idea how it's going to end,. So I didn't go into mine thinking "Yes, pain and suffering for all!" Even if that's a bit how it turned out. :-P

I didn't realize though how much all of the stories for this contest I'd read were like that until I got to yours and went "Oh, a happy ending, well that's just lovely!" As someone else said, a breath of fresh air.

I just know the moment I get off the computer and go to do something else is the moment they make the announcement. It's going to happen the second I stop paying attention.

That's what email alerts to your phone are for. Now if I could just figure out how to get one for the blog, in addition to the one I already have set up for this thread...

I tried, I really did.  My third draft that ended up in the garbage was Finn questing for the Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness in the Black Emporium DLC.  It was supposed to be goofy.  Then Evelina poked her head in and that crashed and burned.

So I caved and went the blood and drama route.

Generally the waiting doesn't bother me to much. Well as long as I have a good conversation to read. That is why I keep presenting topics for discussion. Just trying to distract everyone from the waiting. So does anyone have anything else to discus other than how long and agonizing the waiting is?

So! Uh...Nice...weather in here. Has anyone considered or done NaNoWriMo before? Attempted twice, completed twice, may try writing some Dragon Age AU this year.

Something I was thinking about while writing mine, which I then forgot about until just now, was about the number of characters to introduce in a short story. Obviously with only 2500 words it's not easy to flesh them out as much as in longer-length pieces. So it's usually not a good idea to have too many, or they will just seem flat. But on the other hand, you usually need at least a couple to guide the story and have conflict.

I started mine with only my main character, and various background unnamed mages and templars, but I felt it was lacking something. When I introduces a secondary character, it started to feel more interesting. But the word-limit definitely gives constraints in developing them, especially when you need to have a coherent plot and some sort of satisfying resolution.

I took what I think was an easy way out when it comes to secondary characters. I used characters everyone should be familiar with from the two games.

I had only three characters I was working with, one of them being a side character that only had like, two lines.
I find it's wayyyy easier to write short when you have less people to shine the spotlight on.

I've finally caved in and posted my entry on FF.  If nothing else is capable of distracting me today, reviews might do so.

If SoLD would be kind enough to add it to her list, I'd very much appreciate it.  <3

Title:  Powerless
Author:  Scary Lady
Word Count: 2500
Summary:
For six generations the Laurentius family bred true; mage marrying mage to create a line of powerful Magisters.  In Tevinter high society, if one is not a mage, then one is a liability, at the mercy of predatory Magisters and their… pets.

At fifteen, Livia Laurentius - daughter of Magister Lucretius and his powerful wife Cornelia - has demonstrated not a single spark of magic.  Her future hangs in the balance; her parents are a hairsbreadth from sending her to Orlais for her own safety.

Lucretius sees no alternative, but Cornelia has an audacious idea.

It’s time for drastic measures.

My cast consisted of the templar protagonist (story's from his viewpoint), antagonist bloodmage, a bunch of nameless hostages, the protag's commander and the two young recruits he's assisting.

I always wanted to take part in, but forgit it every single time. I will consider it again, but it will probably slip my mind...

I'm going to donate blood today. I bet they are going to announce it then. :pinched:

I've never done NaNo either - November is usually a busy period at uni with lots of coursework due in, so I'd be too scared to let myself get distracted. Maybe after I graduate, you never know!

My primary fic (actually, only, aside from this contest) is a result of NaNo 2011. Still not done with it, but still "won" so I'm going to make myself a free copy of my story for my shelf at home. I use the same name on the NaNo page and on FF.net.

That's true. Never looked at it that way. :o

Let's hope that my sacrifice is worth it.

I've tried NaNo every year for the past five.

And November never cooperates, and I never 'win'.

I do keep writing, though, so I suppose in the grand scheme of things, I'm doing ok.

I tried NaNo for the first time this year. Was clicking along pretty well, too. Then Skyrim got released right in the middle of the month. Epic fail. ;)
