Hm, well my 'cast' only dealt with two particular characters - Olivia and Samson. I knew from the outset that I wanted to only have a few characters, though there is the mention of Isabela, Thrask and a Fade spirit. Always with these sort of short, one off fics, I try to keep a tight reign on how many people I have running around, lest it become confusing or go off track regarding who the 'main' character is, their predicament and emotions making it easier for me to actually develop said character over the story.

Long time lurker, second time poster. Good luck to everyone today!

Re: bittersweet endings.

I tried, I really did. I wrote an ending that was meant to be bittersweet, it just turned out bitter. Having Templars brutally murder mages because the only possible alternative is Tranquility doesn't strike me as having any redeeming qualities. It doesn't help when it's a mage couple, and they're agreeing to be brutally murdered because neither one wants to see the other become Tranquil.

It's the best of two or three terrible outcomes, but it's still awful.

So I wimped out and made the ending a thing of rainbows and butterflies. I know it probably read as jarring, but I couldn't actually bring myself to write the original ending scene that I'd planned. I wrote half of it and felt so utterly depressed about Thedas that I had to go back and change it.

I didn't even have characters in mine. So, uh. Yeah. It wasn't happy though. Mages and templars just don't lend themselves to happy, I think. Demons and lyrium addiction. JOY!

/not so much.

I've been told mine was a sweet ending that was also a big surprise. Several told me they should have seen it coming but was completely shocked at the end regardless. :wizard:

It's hard to right a happy "ending" to a story that's only part of the set up to a huge war. It made more sense to me to have a sad ending.

I tried NaNo for the first time this year. Was clicking along pretty well, too. Then Skyrim got released right in the middle of the month. Epic fail. ;)

My friend sent this to me last November. I shrugged and kept on playing Skyrim. NaNoWriMo word count be damned!:P

David Gaider just tweeted "Watching some fans dissect my ThedasUK interview is amusing. Reminds me why I don't visit the forums any longer," and I actually said aloud to myself "Just like the Maker abandoned Thedas..."

Talking to myself about a fictional place like it's real...

Re: NaNoWriMo: I find I'm doing well if I can get 1500-3000 words a week out, so no NaNo for me. OTOH, I've put just a handful of the stuff I've written in this fandom over the last 18 months on FF.net, and it tells me I've got about 2 NaNo wins worth of words there. I'm the turtle, not the hare.

Re: Casting: I think my first two drafts for the contest suffered for only having one character for the first 2/3s. The protag was confronted with a moral decision that almost nobody would know about and waffled about it for 1000 words or so. It was all very relevant to issues around responsible magic use and self-policing, but it was also... not very gripping. A partner of some kind might have made for an argument, which would have been more engaging... but also would have removed the personal, private responsibility aspect. Eh. That's why I ditched that one.

So let's see... I had one cup of coffee at home, a soda when I first got to work, and now I'm on a white mocha from the coffee shop down the road. They need to get that post up before I vibrate out of my own skin.

Something I was thinking about while writing mine, which I then forgot about until just now, was about the number of characters to introduce in a short story. Obviously with only 2500 words it's not easy to flesh them out as much as in longer-length pieces. So it's usually not a good idea to have too many, or they will just seem flat. But on the other hand, you usually need at least a couple to guide the story and have conflict.

I started mine with only my main character, and various background unnamed mages and templars, but I felt it was lacking something. When I introduces a secondary character, it started to feel more interesting. But the word-limit definitely gives constraints in developing them, especially when you need to have a coherent plot and some sort of satisfying resolution.

What a good point. One of the things that made me most pleased with my story was that I was able to handle two main characters and five secondaries and portray them all pretty well... Perhaps.

Oh and my ending was happyish...

I had that problem with mine as well - my main character had an internal conflict so I was trying to make that relevant to what was happening around him rather than having him stand and monologue about it for a few hundred words. And then I introduced my secondary character to act as a sort of foil, which I think helps with characterisation too.

All of the entries I've read have been completely tragic, one of them had me on the brink of tears (thanks Miri1984 :crying:) ... not that tragedy is a bad thing, I've loved reading every single one, but now my happy ending just seems a bit silly and naive next to all the death and demons...

Nope, mine has a successful ending.  (2500 words doesn't leave enough room for happy)  Tragedy is easy to write for Thedas.

And as for NaNo, I've been successful 3/4 of the times I tried, but now I'm editing the beast.

I for one LOVE sad endings. They just stick to me more than happy ones, you know? By the way, I wrote this short piece on why I find tragic stories so much more compelling if anyone cares to read it. :)

I actually think I surprised by writing not only a happy ending, but even a relatively non-violent story. There's a scene of backstory that has violence, but that's it. Trust me, given my prior works, those are both surprising. ;)

My story ended up more violent than I had intended, but, even with all that happens to my main character, it ends on a vaguely hopeful note. Couldn't say it was a happy ending, though!
