Respect for the Intellectual Property means you don't make major changes to the already established lore (like Hawke never existed or Kirkwall exists in a 1960s timewarp).
Well, there goes my Rocky Horror adaptation.
JK. Looking forward to submitting!

Aw man... my work that I've been working on is too long for this. It's 3300 words now. I wanted to give it a good ending
On my first draft, I ended up with 2900 words or so, and now that I've edited through it twice, I got it down to 2437. It's always easier to take out than to add more. Walk away from the project for a couple hours then come back to it. You'll find that there's a lot that doesn't need to be there in order to tell your story.
Good luck!

Early Year 9:36 Dragon
Is an original Dragon Age inspired short story about a Templar Lt. stationed at a small post called “Maker’s Watch” on the island group of Randel’s Reach.
He has a new recruit joining him in a busy port community who have their own local superstitions compounded by fear of news coming from Kirkwall. This story is a rich depiction of a single day in the life of a Templar who has a deep history with the islands and it’s people. This is a personal story and mystery less the struggle of physical conflict as it is of xenophobia and understanding duty when duty comes with internal conflict. This sleepy routine is inspired by nightmares both real and better left laying.
Taking full advantage of the 2500 limit-this story has a nice twist and written by an experienced writer and fine artist.

I am a little concerned I will be disqualified as correct grammer etc is taken into account, I have improved but I still rely on my BETA reader to improve stuff - I dont think Betas would be allowed.
PLEASE PLEASE edit your work, show it to friends and ask for their critical eye, and edit your work again. As long as your beta reader doesn't do the writing for you, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having someone edit your work.
All writers have editors (the BioWare eidtors are particularly amazing folk!) so PLEASE I cannot stress this enough, edit edit edit.
Lol I think you messed up the quotes because I didn't say that. the person who quoted me did.
It's good to know we're allowed to have editors. And I'm well aware of the 'writing is rewriting' thing.

Question: If we go over the 2500 word limit but still feel something's kinda necessary to better understand something, can we e-mail it alongside our story as like a general note that can be read optionally.
Because that might make this a bit easier for me, considering I'm around 3300 words and I can't figure out what should go and what shouldn't. That's one part of writing I seriously suck at. Figuring out what is just not needed.

@crystancil: I wish I could figure out what isn't needed. I've been away from the story for hours now and I just see everything as necessary T_T

You may want to consider a beta. I know everyone has their own writing style, but you may want to look at how balanced your story is: dialogue, settings, perspective etc... Some writers tend to be more heavy on one aspect than another.

The rules are simple—write a short story from the perspective of a Mage or Templar.
Is this singular perspective, as in one character and on character alone, or course it jump between multiple perspectives if they remain Mages and/or Templars?

-Judas, A sideward/side character (no absolute definition to the Dragon Age universe, just "another Templar")
-An Amell, not mine precisely, but an Amell should be in the story, based upon the idea of the Human mage origin story, and the Amell becoming the warden
-Placed in Ferelden, Circle tower, Wintertime
-The Templar should be a bit plain, though not cliched
I'm going to have so much fun with this :3

Also, may we post these stories on blogs/ff.net after the contest has ended and the winner(s) have been announced?

Be sure to read Dragon Age Asunder to inspire and inform your writing!
Lore picky as I am, this is a little backwards intuitive, or something, right?
I don't have a big enough head to say "I am going to win a book" but why would I read the book first, if the prize is the book and that's what I want to win? (Yes, with David Gaider's signature, which is great, and David Gaider rocks, but still ....)
Isn't it like entering a competition to win a TV by writing a 2500 word review of a TV program you've watched on that exact brand of TV? Only signed by .... some really cool TV personality? And that TV personality reads it.
Never mind. I am going to buy the book, but I'm not gunna read it before I enter this and find out I haven't won one. It's just too confusing.
(In case you can't tell, I'm worried about contradicting lore in some horrendous way.)
(PS. Yes, the idea of David Gaider reading one's story is also purty exciting. Maybe I have no point. I guess the actual book is just a part of it.)

Percival was grateful that it had been Elwin he had stumbled across and not anyone else who would have surely left him to die or even finish him off. He knew that they would have to part ways soon which was a pity as he was getting used to her company. But where he needed to take Shi-mira was not a place Elwin could follow.

This is a story about discovering new warrior classes and lines beginning to blur on what is acceptable in the minds of the current generation. After the fall of The Circle in Kirkwall, new alliances are formed as the threats of abused power runs rampant in Thedas. Follow Mcalaster Knox, a mage that became a knight in order to form his own style of fighting. The Arcane Warrior! As his town is being destroyed by blood mages, he forms an alliance with a beautiful templar not knowing what they got themselves into.

Man, I had so much fun writing this, I kind of want to finish the story without restrictions. With the word limit I kept hitting walls cause I wanted to add more and more in, but since it's a contest, you have to have a cut off point or it gets crazy for the people judging. I hope I'm one of the finalist. I'd love to finish the story and actually have it in DA3 or something! I haven't wrote a fanfict in forever! It was challenging and I hope to do again. Thanks Bioware!

I have a question: is it alright if Hawke and the Warden are mentioned in the story? Not their first names, but their gender, or love interests?

Yes you can bring any characters from the DA Universe into the story.
And you are free to do whatever you wish with your story once the challenge is finished and the winner announced

If we want to include an author's note would that count towards the word limit? And would it be okay to put it at the end of the story when we email the document or have it be a seperate attachment that is optional to read?
If anyone knows I'd really appreciate an answer.
