I know that the stories must be original work, but can we have a character quote from a canon verse of the Chant of Light?

As long as it's clear that the character is quoting the Chant, I can't imagine it would be a problem. It's an important part of the lore.

Submitted. Thanks for the opportunity. It's nice to be motivated to write a short story in a world that is already made, so you can assume some things about lore and focus on characterisation, etc. Fun.

this is going to be fun!!!!

He was fifteen when it all started. That had been a year ago, or two, he was never good with time. The elf Sowell sat at the entrance of the circle tower of Ferelden, or what had once been the circle tower. It was a complete mess the only people there were his three companions and himself. It was funny seeing him there, for he was the only Dalish Templar in the whole order.
“You okay, Sowell?” It was Marry a city born elf and one of the first trained elven guards under king Alistair.

What ya think????

I'm guessing they're looking for story lines for DA3. Since the writers ran out of material last time.

This is the reason Bioware's writer fans can't have nice things.

If it's an art competition or a cosplay competition, of which there have been several, no one bats a lash. But have one writing comp and people snark that Bioware wants to steal ideas.

Go away.

Here!  Here!  Sold !!

If I could be half the writer any of the Bioware writers are - I will be doing well - Bioware do not need any help from us.

Only a conceited fool would truly believe such an outrageous claim. *sneer*  Image IPB

I don't believe this. But I would like to know what their motive for this challenge was.

How about ?

Simply promoting David Gaider's new book Image IPB

while

recognising a large part of the Bioware Communtiy are writers - not just artists or seamspersons ? Image IPB

Is that SO bizarre that people can not comprehend this? Image IPB

I mean really ?!?!? Image IPB

The motive could be several of us fanfic writers getting upset on the forums when the last Art/Cosplay comp was announced for Mark of the Assassin (because there had already been a DA2 Art/Cosplay comp mere weeks before that). Some of us voiced our disappointment that writers were being overlooked, and this considering Bioware's games are frequently praised for their writing.

The posts prompted the competition to be more flexible and allow other art forms, including craft and writing. I was one of the winners.

So maybe it's nothing more than the Community team giving us our own Writing Comp. We practically asked for one, after all. ;)

Thanks for clarifying. I'm not protesting this challenge by any means, and I'm certainly not regarding Bioware with any suspicion. It's good to see the fanart/fanfic appreciation barriers falling down.

Also, I've started reading your fic and it's ace! I'm glad your talents were recognised.

Hey, thanks! :) We had a 1000 word limit on the MotA comp -- gees, it's hard writing a story that small, haha.

And no worries. I doubt it'll stop the hardcore conspiracy theorists, but you do what you can. XD

Acctually I was making sarcasm towards what seemed to be a rushed effort
in DA2, and the DLc's haven't really done much for me either.   That
all aside I wasn't aiming it at the fanfic group for any reason in
particular.  I played the game for mage a rouge and felt cheated out og
60 bucks both times, and plenty others do as well.  However EA doesn't
care as long as it get it's money at the end of the week.]

TBH

- IF I was approached by Bioware or DG himself and they asked if they could use my story/character as a base for DA3 , because of this comp, I would be so freakin beside myself with joy. What an honor! Image IPB

The book as a prize is great, signed even better - but the real prize for me would be chatting to the father of my two favourite characters (Zevran & Fenris) & my current hero, on Skype. Actually I'd prolly just sit there like some vapid idiot LOL Image IPB

I would have to say it would be only fair since Ive ripped off their stuff for over 6 months for my writing.Image IPB

I think there's misconceptions tied up with writing for fun and fandom. People seem to think it's less of a skill than drawing etc. Or that "all fan fiction is awful."

People also tend to criticise the writing in DAII and just put the whole thing in the "did not like" basket. YMMV, obviously, but I really liked Ketojan and all of his dialogue. And, my goodness, the codex entries were amazing. And Merrill.

I like this challenge because it encourages people to get their hands dirty and try out what they are criticising. (I learned a few things about how tricky it is to make an interesting character that sounds real but is still fully consistent with lore, while I was writing mine, for example.)

I loved the story in DA2 - I saw nothing wrong with the writing whatsoever - it was the delivery that I felt let the game down.

Maybe it was too rushed /shrugs - I dont know.

I am also very keen to see how it all ends - that is good writing IMO

They kept telling us how much our choices in DAO were gonna matter in DA23  a nd it never seemed as much as they were letting on.  The rushed feeling i think is the 5 min quest here and there that didnt add to DAO or DA2 they we just the so you could get an oblject that you could probably sell.

The story that I saw was another story happening in another part of the world that my Warden still exhisted - I am hoping my Hawke and my Warden make a re-appearance somehow but I am not expecting that to happen.

Maybe I am too gullible - but I just think it is way too hard to give everyone their multiple endings - even moreso if you take into account Hawkes choices now.

Anyhow this is not the place to discuss a subject that has been done to death.

I heard that the winners of the contest will all be invited to Mr. Gaider's secret script factory, located in the wilds of northern Alberta and staffed by creepy singing dwarves. Colourful and possibly fatal mishaps will befall the contestants until the least reprehensible of the bunch is selected as the new lead writer for the series. That is, unless they're left too traumatized by the experience; in which case, David will stay on.

*Least* reprehensible?

Bah, there goes my chances of surviving Gaider's death-dungeon...
