Magical deus ex mechina disease cure or not, I expect the script writers to handle the situation professionally.
If you ask me though, I feel a "magical cure" would destroy the uniqueness of his character.

If treated, Thane would continue to struggle from internal issues from his Keprals and/or side effects of his treatments. He's no longer fit enough to fight (can't be a squadmate anymore), and must find a new way to atone and make himself useful. Thane would also continue trying to make things right with Kolyat.

Should Thane die from Kepral in ME3?
Well, Bioware dropped various hints about a possible treatment that would prolong Thane's life.
- Lung ransplant as per LotSB
- Lung medigel as per Cerberus News
So Thane living to see the end of ME3 is a possibility, leaving up to the player to think when and how he dies after the game.
In this scenario I would assume that after a war with the Reapers any research to cure Kepral would pretty much be lost. So he will die in the epilogue.
Should Thane die in ME3 in a "blaze of glory" just because he has Kepral?
No.
If there are scripted squadmates deaths I hope it will be treated in a similar fashion as in the SM, so any squadmate can die at point X depending on previous decisions ( that I hope don't come down to something as simple as having pleople loyal/unloyal ).
Killing him off just because he is going to die anyway... is lame, moreso because everybody is going to die once their lifespan expires.
So how would I like Thane's story to conclude? Depending on my Sheps decisions he either dies or walks into the sunset with Shepard'sass hand in hand.

Thane is supposed to kill Udina, but he'd be hunted by a corrupt Captain Bailey, who's on Udina's payroll. Bailey will land a few critical shots on Thane, and as the latter lays dying, he'll coax Bailey over, whisper something to him and then pass him a grenade pin.
Boom. Both die.

From what I know so far, it's kinda tragic but understandable if Thane dies. I think a last-minute-cure might help his fans to keep him alive, but it feels a bit like a cheap plot twist. That's something Thane doesn't deserve.
It doesn't happen in real life ... why should it happen in Mass Effect? Cancer can't get healed by a suddenly invented pill, so to speak.

I agree that he shouldn't just die because he has Kepral's.
And I'm in the camp that does believe that there should be a choice for a "cure" for him, whether or not you romanced him, and it should have some consequences.
I'm hoping as well that it doesn't just come down to "loyal vs. unloyal"
But my own ending? Yep, Thane and Shep go off to the desert and spend the rest of their days "dancing crazy"!

Here's how I wrote it in a fic, at least to the point at which Thane knew death was inevetable. In the end, it's not just the actual way Thane dies that I think is important, but the way a character like him faces it that has the most impact:

While some of the squad was contributing to the repair efforts, the rest were preparing for life now that their near year-long mission aboard the Normandy was drawing to a close. For everyone it was a time to reflect on the new future that none of them thought they had before passing through Omega Four, even if that future was simply to stave off the impending attack of the reapers.
But not for you, Thane told himself. While he could take credit for helping to halt the vanguard of the reaper's return, he could tell by the Doctor's movements and the expression on her face that he would not be a participant when the main assault came. He watched her eyes as they scanned his chart. They were full of sadness and compassion, yet with a dignity that he found strangely reassuring in spite of what he knew was going to come.
He smiled up at her. "I guess it was too much to hope that the pain was merely blunt force trauma?"
Chakwas returned the warm expression. Years of practice told her when a patient needed to be coddled, or when he wanted to hear the truth. Giving Thane anything less would be disrespectful. Thane's body relaxed with a massive exhalation and his eyes drooped shut. Somehow, it was comforting the end was near, especially knowing that he bought time for Kolyat... and everyone else as well. Maybe that would be enough for Kalahira to forgive him for his sins. Maybe he'd have enough time to say goodbye to his son, assuming they could make it back home before it was too late. He looked to the side to see the Doctor was still staring at him. He smiled at her. "You know, I never realized it until now, but you and I have something in common."

If they give him a magical cure, well sucks to be bioware cause a lotta people are going to be angry.
Instead, they should make it realistic.
Or if he dies, make it heartwrenching and realistic.

This is even funnier if you take into account that Drell are reptile-like and their babies can eat solid food since birth... meaning no nipples/breasts!!!
It would be impossible for Thane to die that way, so Bioware can't kill him!!

My housemate has taken our copy of Skyrim home with him, so none for me until after the Festive season. Although playing Skyrim will certainly cure Thane! Although there is a consequence that he becomes addicted until he plays the hundreds of hours of gameplay and through all the sidequests...
